Atomic Theory Project
Do the Evolution
For this project, you will develop a timeline of important events and contributors in the history and
evolution of atomic theory. The personalities that you must include, along with their contributions, are
listed below. Some of them we discussed in class; some of them we did not.
Democritus
John Dalton
Joseph John Thomson
Ernest Rutherford
Niels Bohr
James Chadwick
Wilhelm Röentgen
Max Born
Werner Heisenberg
Erwin Schrödinger
Wolfgang Pauli
Marie & Pierre Curie
Louis de Broglie
Max Planck
Antoine Henri Becquerel
Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac
Ludwig Boltzmann
Henry Mosley
Robert Millikan
Hans Geiger
Ernest Marsden
You will create the timeline in any format you like – a skit, a song, a poster, a diorama, a video, the sky
is the limit. The only restriction is that any sort of performance (videos, songs, whatever) must be a
maximum of four minutes in length. Even if you make a poster or other passive visual, you must be
prepared to tell the class about it in a short oral presentation.
That’s it. No more direction. Be colorful. Be creative. Make me say, “Wow.”

Indicators:
•
•
•
History of Science – Evaluated based on your communication of, and therefore understanding of, the
contributions of each scientist and their sequence in the evolution of the atomic model.
Visual Presentation – Evaluated based on clarity, neatness, creativity, and attention to detail. A
marker and some poster paper will not even begin to be enough.
Oral Communication – Evaluated based on your ability to verbally communicate your understanding
of the material and your visual interpretation of the material.
