I Love New York
STRATEGIC PRAYER GUIDE
INTRODUCTION
Hear the Call. Pray for the City!
We have put this simple prayer guide together for praying people
who have a “heart” for New York City. We hope you will approach the
areas of focus from the perspective of the needs of the millions of people
who live here, as well as those who are affected by New York’s influence in
American culture and World affairs.
The I Love New York Strategic Prayer Guide is another step in
pursuing effective strategies to focus and saturate prayer in targeted
areas. Our overall goal in this is to bring God’s presence and reality
to the everyday lives of the people of New York and for the resulting
transformation of society.
We encourage you to add fasting to your prayer, for Biblical history
reveals that God has mightily broken through and transformed culture
when His people fasted and prayed. (The story of Esther)
THANKS
We want to thank you for using this guide in your prayer for New
York City. It is also our hope that you would use this guide as a model for
your own City, State, or Nation
Our heartfelt thanks go out to all the contributors to this prayer
guide. Its preparation has been an inter-generational labor of many
individuals.

Redemptive Design of New York City:
Giving
We believe that the collective purpose of the people of a city,
is uniquely designed by God in terms of its time in history and the place
where they live. And He has made from one blood every nation of men
to dwell on the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed
times and the boundaries of their dwellings. So that they should seek the
Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is
not far from each one of us (Acts 17:26-27).
The spiritual characteristics, or redemptive design of a city, when
fully released will cause their destiny in God to be revealed in ways that
manifest the likeness and presence of God so that people are drawn to
know Him!
New York City has the redemptive design of giving. A key
component to the design of giving is to provide resources to others so that
they may fulfill their redemptive purpose. NYC, as a world leader gives
a great deal in the natural, but God is looking for her spiritual design
to come forth. NYC has the anointing to birth intercession to the
nations!
Let’s look at an example “on Broadway”. When NYC is operating
fully in her redemptive purpose, out of NYC will come a redeeming of
the arts. We will demonstrate the art of celebrating Kingdom things.
NYC knows how to throw a party in the natural! But God desires that we
demonstrate the diversity and ethnicity of worship and celebration that is
spoken about in scripture.
As you pray into the areas presented to you in this Strategic
Prayer Guide, you will see where we could play a key role in “birthing”
Kingdom influence throughout this city, into this nation and the world
at large. We in NYC want to see the Kingdom of God established here
on earth as it is in heaven. From NYC, we desire to birth revival to the
nations through prayer!
*Take note, that each borough has its own Redemptive Design
and it will be identified on each borough page

THE CHURCH OF NEW YORK CITY
Many Members, One Body
REVIVAL HISTORY
In 1857 Jeremiah Lamphier, a businessman held a prayer
meeting every Wednesday from 12 noon to 1 o’clock in a building of the
North Dutch Church in Manhattan. A great revival was birthed beginning
with this small prayer meeting.
LOCATIONS
•
Re-dig the wells of revival at the corner of Fulton and William
Street in downtown Manhattan (the church is no longer there).
•
Pray these prayers in every church and everywhere in New York
City.
PRAYER POINTS
1.
Revival: Today we pray again that God would come and impact
the culture of the City in a powerful way, and that His presence will
revolutionize everyday lives and the effectiveness of His people as
witnesses in a profound way.
We also pray that God would impact Christians of every
denomination, as well as unbelievers, with dreams and visions that
would bring them into a flow of His Holy Spirit so that they would
increase in the knowledge of God and His passionate love for them.
2.
Leadership: According to Ephesians 4:11-12,we pray that all the
gifts Jesus gave to the church to lead and prepare the church for
works of service: The Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor and Teacher
would be activated in the church in power and anointing.
3.
Unity: According to Jesus’ prayer as revealed in John 17:22-23, pray
that all believers in Jesus Christ from every nation and culture, every
economic level, every community and borough of New York City
would be one.
Call forth the City Church. Though its many members are unique and
congregations distinctive, may we work as one body in harmony and
love. Whether Greek or Jew, male or female, we are all one in Christ.
(1 Corinthians 12:12-13)
4.
Worship: We desire that praise, worship and intercession rise up
from New York City 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

BUSINESS & FINANCE
Thank God, Our True Source of Prosperity
HISTORY
Many people refer to New York as the financial capital of the
World. There is no doubt that the activities on Wall Street affect economic
conditions in many parts of the world. It has been said: “When Wall Street
sneezes, Japan gets a cold and Korea gets the flu.”
The love of money is the
root of all evil, but business itself
is not inherently evil. When our
motivations are pure, we have the
capacity to bless American citizens
and the nations of the world. Profit
based on greed is destructive, but
godly prosperity blesses a nation.
FACT:
The Forbes 400 report in 2007
listed 45 Billionaires with a net
worth at approximately $60.4
Billion, all from NYC
Legend is Peter Minuet bought Manhattan Island from the
Lenape Indian Chief Tammany for goods valued at $24. New Amsterdam
was founded by a consortium of merchants from Holland in order to make
money, later to be known as the colony of New York (1626).
Wall Street was named literally after a stockade or “wall” built
1653 by Dutch colonists to protect the settled area south of it from assault
by the natives and English.

CIVIL GOVERNMENT
Let Righteousness & Justice Reign
There is a sense, in the lower Manhattan area, of being at the
central core and pulse of this massive city. It is one of the key birthing
places of the original government of this Nation. George Washington
stood on the steps of Federal Hall for his inauguration. It was briefly the
location of our Nation’s capital (1789-90) and was also the NY State
Capital until 1797.

EDUCATION
Increase in Wisdom & Knowledge
Though many people think of Boston as the education center of
the nation, New York City has three times as many students and five of
the top fifty universities in America. In addition, there are over one million
students in the education system of New York City.
HISTORY OF PRAYER IN SCHOOL:
•
Engle vs. Vitale: In 1958, five families started the case to
remove the NY State Board of Regents prayer, “Almighty God,
we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy
blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers, and our Country.”
•
The Supreme Court ruled that the above prayer was
unconstitutional on June 25th, 1962.
•
Madelyn Murray O’Hare began her case against Bible readings in
schools in 1963.
PRAYER POINTS:
1.
Declare that prayer would once again resound in the schools of NYC.
2.
Pray for the spirit of excellence to be present in the education system,
Board of Education, teachers, and students.
But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellence of the
power may be of God and not of us. (2 Corinthians 4:7)
But the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who
have it. (Ecclesiastes 7:12)
3.
Pray that there would be a pursuit of the knowledge of God and truth
versus intellectualism and humanism.
And He has filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom and
understanding, in knowledge and all manner of workmanship. (Exodus
35:31)
4.
Declare that every individual working within this area would have
the perspective that they are educating and equipping tomorrow’s
leaders.

MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS
The Power of Words
HISTORY
The first newspaper in America was published by a Christian in
Boston in 1690. The aim was to report occurrences of divine providence,
to help people understand public affairs and foreign issues and to cure
the spirit of lying. By 1845, more than 100 American towns had Christian
newspapers and up until then the Biblical Christian perspective was
predominant in the media. When The New York Times began in 1821, it
was a Christian paper and in it illegal abortion and political corruption
were exposed.
Today, secular humanism reigns in the media. Mass media
regularly reaches millions of people and influences the public conscience
more than anything else. ABC, NBC, CBS, The New York Times, Time
Magazine, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report are among the
most influential media outlets in the world and are all based in New York
City.
Behind the coverage are the journalists who can now be called
an unreached people group, with only a reported 8% who attend church.
They are a well-educated, well-paid “new elite” with confidence in their
secular world view.
PRAYER POINTS
1.
Proclaim the Christian heritage of journalism
2.
Pray that there would be responsibility with influence in the media
Set a guard; O Lord, over my mouth, keep watch over the door of my
lips. (Psalm 141:3)
3.
Proclaim that they would be accurate and fair in their presentation
May the word of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing
in your sight... (Psalm 19:14)
4.
Declare that a high priority be placed on the value of truth and
decency
Talk no more so very proudly, for the Lord is the God of knowledge,
and by Him actions will be weighed. (1 Samuel 2:3)
5.
That the eyes and minds of the journalists be opened to embrace a
Biblical world view, and that Christian journalists find favor and be
selected for more positions in the media
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. (Prov. 23:7)

Brooklyn
HISTORY
The Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island, Fulton’s Ferry and the Dodgers
are just a few of the exciting names associated with the borough’s history. This
64 square mile borough is also the quintessential city of immigrants. One out
of every seven Americans can trace their family roots through the streets of
Brooklyn.
In 1646 the Dutch first settled in the vicinity of Fulton and Hoyt
Streets. They called it Breuckelen after the village of the same name in
Holland meaning “broken land”. They called it this because of the many
creeks and bays that broke up the landmasses. In 1683 the Dutch collectively
called all the towns of Brooklyn, Kings County.
The first major battle between The Continental Army and British
Royal Army happened in Brooklyn Heights. In 1814, Steam Ferry service to
Manhattan was established. It was New York City’s first suburb. Brooklyn was
known for its homes and churches; being nicknamed “Borough of Churches”.
On May 24, 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge opened connecting the most
famous city, (NYC) to the most famous borough, (Brooklyn).
In the 1900’s, droves of European immigrants coming through Ellis
Island settled in Brooklyn’s neighborhoods creating very definitive cultural lines
and customs.
One thing Brooklynites are famous for is their speech. The “native”
tongue is “Brooklynese”. Fuhgeddaboutit (forget about it); Johnny Pump
(fire hydrant); “not for nuttin’ but…” (a phrase often used before telling
someone the truth)!! You may think it’s an odd thing of uniqueness to point
out, but Brooklynites love their language. It’s distinguishing and perfectly
understandable to each other. Proper inflection is critical and that’s not
something one can set to writing. So if you evah in Brooklyn and can’t find
your way, jist pull da car ova, and ask somebody for direkshins…tell’m you
wanna get ta sevin-d-sevinth and seck-ind by six-a-clock an’ yu don’t have a
minit ta speah (prounced like “yeah”). Um sure they’ll tell ya da best root ta
take. Tell’m I sentcha!

Bronx
HISTORY
The Bronx is NYC’s northernmost borough and the only borough
situated primarily on the United States mainland rather than on an island. It is
also home to the world famous Bronx Zoo and Yankee Stadium.
In 1639, Jonas Bronck arrived in the New World. He purchased a 500
acre tract of land east of Harlem between the Harlem River and the Aquehung,
which was the Native American name for the river that flows through the center
of the Bronx. Bronck built a house and began to farm the land. The Native
Americans called the land “Rananchqua,” but the Dutch and English began to
refer to it as “Broncksland.” In a similar fashion, the Aquehung was soon known
as Bronck’s River. In time, the spelling was changed to “Bronx,” and eventually
the entire area adopted the name.
Interestingly, in the center of The Bronx Flag is the Bronck family crest
encircled by a laurel wreath. The laurel denotes honor and fame. The crest
emblems in the center of the laurel wreath represent the hope of the New
World while not forgetting the Old. Below the crest is a three-pointed shield
with emblems representing the coming of peace and liberty and the importance
of commerce. The Latin motto “Ne Cede Malis” is printed on the flag meaning
“Yield Not To Evil”. (Truly, this is God’s redemptive design for The Bronx).
Unlike the other boroughs, The Bronx is always referred to as “The
Bronx,” never just “Bronx.” This is because the borough took its name from a
river - the Bronx River. Generally, the word “the” precedes the names of rivers
and other bodies of water; hence, the borough is known as the “The Bronx.”
In the 17th century, Anne Hutchinson (whom the Hutchinson River Parkway was
named after) was murdered by Native Americans. *This could be the root to
violence and the high crime rate in that region.
In 1904, the first subway connecting the Bronx to Manhattan was built
under 149th Street, providing cheap rapid transit that persuaded hundreds of
thousands to leave tenements in Manhattan for spacious new apartments in the
Bronx.
During the mid-1960’s to the mid-1970’s, the Bronx went into an era
of sharp change in the residents’ quality of life. One theory is that the urban
renewal project in the borough destroyed existing low-density neighborhoods
in favor of roads that produced urban sprawl as well as high-density housing
projects.
A wave of arson overtook the southern portion of the borough’s
apartment buildings. When the Bronx was on fire, Dr. Gerald Kaufman (Founder
of Love Gospel Assembly) prophesied to the people telling them to stay in the
midst of an exodus and fulfill Jeremiah 29:5-7 (Build houses and dwell in them;
plant gardens and eat their fruit. Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and
take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may
bear sons and daughters—that you may be increased there, and not diminished.
And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away
captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace). Dr.
Kaufman realized that God had a plan and an eternal purpose, not only for New
York City, but also for The Bronx.
Since the early 1990’s, much development has occurred. Groups
affiliated with South Bronx churches have built the Nehemiah Homes with about
1,000 units. This and other developments have transformed the south Bronx and
the ripple effects are felt borough-wide. In 1997, the
Bronx was designated an “All American City” by the National Civic
League, signifying it’s comeback from the decline of the 1970’s. There is
21
no village, town, city or state in the entire continental USA that has more
universities than The Bronx, which is the home to 12.
The Bronx is the only NYC Borough with a freshwater river (the Bronx
River) running through it. The borough includes 2 of the largest parks in NYC:
Pelham Bay Park and Van Cortlandt Park.
A major new musical genre was birthed in the Bronx – Hip Hop! As
Hip Hop’s popularity grew, the Bronx is often referred to as “The Boogie Down
Bronx”.

Queens
History
One hundred years ago Queens was a sparsely populated rural borough
of meadows and marshes, colonial estates and small villages inaccessible to most of
the world. Today it is home to New York City’s two major airports (John F. Kennedy
and LaGuardia) and has become the world’s gateway to the region. Half of its 2.2
million residents are foreign born. Queens is the most diverse county in the nation
with approximately 180 languages spoken in its dozens of unique neighborhoods.
Queens is the City’s largest borough and its geographic center.
The collective vitality of the borough’s immigrant community can be
witnessed in the number of items loaned through the Queens Borough Library
system. In 2007 these new Americans, eager to advance educationally, have
contributed to making it become the No. 1 library system in the United States with
over 21 million items in circulation.
Historically, Queens has played a major role in bringing the world’s
people together. The two New York’s World’s Fairs of 1939-40 and 1964-65 were
hosted in Flushing Meadow Park. Over 100 million visitors came from around the
world between the two Fairs. From 1945 to 1950, Flushing Meadow Park served
as the first home to the United Nations General Assembly. In November of 1947,
prophecy was fulfilled at this site when the General Assembly endorsed the re-birth
of the nation of Israel. One year later from the same site, the General Assembly
then adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The IRT # 7 Train played a historic role in the development of Queens
and provides a significant example of the borough as a national gateway. In 2000,
the White House designated the #7 Train (aka The International Express) as one of
sixteen historic National Millennium Trails for its representation of the immigrant
experience in America. Passing through a seven-mile route in northwest Queens,
the elevated #7 Train was built in the early 1900s to redistribute large numbers of
recent immigrants.
Today, getting off the #7 Train in Sunnyside, one can spend an evening at
a Spanish theater or a Romanian night club; get off in Woodside, rent a Thai video
or hear traditional music at an Irish pub; get off in Jackson Heights, visit an Indian
sari shop or dance at a Colombian night club; get off in Corona, watch the Italian
game of bocce being played or buy fresh tortillas at a Mexican bakery; get off in
Flushing, eat in an Afghan restaurant or take classes in Korean drumming.
The international character Queens is ultimately a reflection of its
spiritual DNA rooted in the Flushing Remonstrance of 1657. The Remonstrance was
written by God fearing townspeople of Flushing in response to the ecclesiastical
restrictions of New Amsterdam’s Governor, Peter Stuyvesant. The declaration by the
townspeople of Flushing became America’s first charter of religious liberty and a
prophetic forerunner to the U.S. Bill of Rights.

Staten Island
History
The discovery of Staten Island is credited to an Italian navigator,
Giovanni da Verranzzano, sailing under the French flag, who entered New
York Bay on the Dolphin in April 1524.
In August 1661, the first permanent settlement on Staten Island was
located at what is now South Beach and the first institution established was the
office of Director General for the purpose of governing the island.
In 1776, a British Officer wrote about Staten Island “surely this
country is the paradise of the world…” Staten Island, before it was colonized,
bore resemblance to the Garden of Eden with its fertile land, growing fruit,
clear springs, beautiful woodlands, picturesque scenery and a *floral fragrance
documented to carry for 2 miles out to sea.
*Note: The enemy perverted this beautiful fragrance using the Staten
Island dump, which has been a stigma of Staten Island and which can
be seen from outer space. However, God is restoring this land…the
dump is currently closed and plans are in the works to make this site a
recreational park.
As early as 1623, Staten Island was known for its resources where
travelers would stop at the northeast tip of the Island called “the watering
place” to fill their bottles with fresh water from the streams.
Over 28,000 years ago, glaciers from Wisconsin moved down the
Eastern Seaboard; leaving advanced glaciers and debris behind forming Todt
Hill, which is the highest spot on the eastern seaboard south of Maine. The
glacier erratics are only one of the ways in which Staten Island is geologically
interesting. This has only occurred in two other places in the world.
Staten Island has a significant birthing anointing and has been called
the “womb of the city.” Being the smallest of the 5 boroughs in New York City
but nevertheless, a strategic place. South Beach (at the base of the Verrazano
bridge) is a gateway to New York City.
On September 11, 1776, delegates from the Continental Congress,
Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Edward Rutledge met with Lord Howe
of England for a futile peace conference at the Conference House, located
in Tottenville. The American delegates refused and remained firm in their
demands for recognition of the complete independence of the colonies.
In the mid 1800’s, the Biddle House is documented and recorded as
a place of revival.
Located on Lighthouse Hill, one of the highest places on the island
is Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art and is also an active Buddhist
temple. The museum is an exact replica of the Tibetan Temple in Tibet and the
only one in the western hemisphere.
