Bottom Line
You are chosen to have real faith in Christ
In the Bible
Matthew 8:5-13
Big Picture
Faith can be a tough concept to figure out at times.
We may ask, "What is it? How do I know if I have it? How does it work?"
These are all great questions to ask. The Centurion in Matthew 8 shows us all that true faith is not based on how much you have but
instead where you put it. Faith is about the person you put it into and for the Centurion that person was Jesus.
Life Group Discussion Questions
Set Expectations for Life Group
Make introductions, put away cell phones, try to have fun but stay focused. Respect each other. We’re here to grow.
The goals are to build relationships, have real converstaions, grow closer to Christ, and have a lot of fun!
Take a few minutes to set expectations (not a set of rules) about what Life Group is like and why we do Life Groups. Share with them your heart for being there for them.
Optional Activity (5-6 minutes)
Supermarket
The first player says: "I went to the supermarket to buy an Apple (or any other object you can buy in a supermarket that begins with an A). The next
player repeats the sentence, including the "A" word and adds a "B" word.
Each successive player recites the sentence with all the alphabet items, adding one of his own. For example; 'I went to the supermarket and bought an
Apple, Banana, CD, dog food, envelopes, frozen fish'. It's not too hard to reach the end of the alphabet, usually with a little help! Watch out for ‘Q’ and
‘X’
FROM THE RELATIONSHIP (5-6 minutes) | questions that are designed for building the relationships in Life Group
If they made a movie about your life what would the title be and which actor would you want to play you?
FROM THE TENSION | “you” directed questions for driving personal tension and connects to the topics
1. Have you ever put your faith in something or someone that let you down? How did you feel after that?
2. What does someone have to do to prove they are trustworthy in your opinion?
FROM THE TRUTH | using the momentum from the Tension, point towards the truth and hope of the Bible
Have a student read Matthew 8:5-13
3. Why was Jesus astonished? What did the Centurion say that amazed Jesus so much? Was it important that the Centurion was not a Jew?
4. What do you think of this statement, "It does not matter what you believe all that matters is that you believe it with all of your heart." Have you heard
this before? Is this true? What is wrong with this statement based on what we have been talking about today?
FROM THE APPLICATION | helping the Life Group, as a whole, to discover how their faith comes to life in tangible and realistic actions/decisions
5. What are you putting your faith into right now? Yourself? Friends? Boyfriend/girlfriend? Your ability?
6. What would it take for you to put all your faith in Jesus? What would have to change?
7. How can we put our faith in Jesus this week? What does that look like for you?
NEXT STEP
Ask your students for prayer requests. Pair students up, and have them all pray for each other to close out and through this week, challenge them to see
if it changes their perspective. Pray with them.
