Textbook: Algebra for College Students(custom edition for Hunter College with MyMathLab and student’s solution manual) by Robert Blitzer, Pearson Custom Publishing. Note: you must buy a new textbook for this course. The custom edition can be purchased at The Hunter College Bookstore or at Shakespeare and Company (Lexington Avenue between 68 and 69 streets). Course Description: Math 101 is designed for students who intend to major in a field which requires proficiency in algebra. The course content includes inequalities, systems of equations, polynomials, geometry, graphing, rational expressions, radicals, and quadratic equations. A major focus of the course is on the development of the problem­solving abilities. We will cover sections 1.1~1.7, 2.1~2.5, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.1~5.7, 6.1~6.8, 7.1~7.7, 8.1~8.4, 9.1,9.2, 9.3 and 10.1. We will roughly cover 4 sections per week. Attendance: Attendance is required. Students who are absent from class are responsible for the work missed. Assignments: Online homework will be given through www.mymathlab.com. You will need access code and the course number for use of this online service. The access code for MyMathLab(name of the online homework program) is included in the purchase of NEW textbook. The course number is cha26368. The online homework(Mymathlab) will count 20% of the final course grade. Exams: There are four one­hour in­class exams and a two­hour departmental uniform final exam. Final exam will count as two in­class exams. Thus you will have a total of six exam scores. There will be 4 in class exams and a final departmental exam. The final exam will count as 2 exams. Of these 6 parts, the lowest is dropped, and the remaining 5 parts are averaged to obtain the exam average There will be no make­up exam for the first missed exam . If you miss an exam, the exam will be marked 0. Exam scores will count 70% of the final course grade. Dolciani Mathematics Learning Center Problem Session: You are required to sign up for a weekly problem session at The Dolciani Mathematics Learning Center (302 Hunter North). This can be done by either calling The Dolciani Mathematics Learning Center at 212­650­3911 between 8am and 1pm, or by going to 300HN between 8am and 1pm. The problem sessions are given several times a week and if you cannot make it at your assigned time for some week, you can attend at a different time if space is available. If you attend a problem session more than once a week, you are only given credit for one attendance. The problem sessions give you the opportunity to work in small groups on homework problems under the guidance of an experienced problem session leader. The problem sessions begins on the week of September 8th . Each attendance at the problem sessions is worth 1% of your final average, up to 10% of your final average will be taken during each Problem Session. Attendance will count 10% of the final course grade. Grading Policy: To receive an incomplete, you must have taken at least three of the in­class exams, have at least a C average on those exams, and have a legitimate excuse for missing the final exam. The letter grade is determined using the college guideline(please refer to undergraduate bulletin). Also to be eligible for credit/no credit option, you need to attend most of lecture and should have finished at least 60% of homework. The Dolciani Mathematics Learning Center is also a very good place to work on your MyMathLab assignments. Calculators: A scientific calculator may be used for the exams. Graphing calculators are not permitted for the exams. However, smartphones, tablets, computers, etc cannot be used during the exam.
