This is a phrase that is shared frequently at this very special time of the year. We celebrate having a new start and make promises to ourselves as we set resolutions that we plan to carry out in good faith. Don’t feel bad at yourself if you stop the diet after the first week or you are not able to call your mother everyday. Instead, start your resolution over again tomorrow morning. So it is with our days in a school house. Every day teachers enter the school building with dreams and goals set for their students. Many times, those plans are sidetracked as teachers become flexible in their role in order to provide a learning environment that meets the needs of the students. However, as we begin this new year, a new level of intensity will be in place as we prepare our students for the Spring, 2007 CRCT. Students will practice the standards required for their grade level. They will practice test taking strategies. And they will have access to the practice of test questions on the Georgia Online Assessment System and Skills Tutor computer programs. These can also be accessed from your home internet. Everyone feels the stress of this intense preparation, so please support your student by providing an atmosphere at home that encourages study and completion of homework. Stay in touch with your child’s teacher so that you know the successes and struggles your student is faced with. Let your New Year’s Resolutions include a plan to strengthen your involvement in your child’s education. The staff of Ruth Hill Elementary School is very much aware that without you, we can not make our greatest impact in your student’s learning. You are key to the success of the SOARing eagles at Ruth Hill. Valerie Mathura, Principal Break 29- 5th Grade to GYSTC January 2008 REMINDER: Report Cards will be sent home on January 22nd . Counselor’s Corner Here at Ruth Hill Elementary we strive to instill our children with good character traits that are universally recognized as good for the individual and good for society. The objective goodness of virtues is based on the fact that they: Affirm our human dignity Promote the well-being and happiness of the individual Serve the common good Define our rights and obligations Meet the classical ethical tests of reversibility (Would you want to be treated this way?) and universalizability (Would you want all persons to act this way in a similar situation?). Please talk to your child every week about the character word of the week and discuss how your family demonstrates that value in everyday life. The words for the 3rd nine weeks of school are: Respect for the Creator, Creativity, Tolerance, Thriftiness, Cleanliness, Courage, Honesty, Patriotism, and Perseverance. Important Reminder: This year, the Ruth Hill School Improvement Plan is focused on Reading, Math, and Writing. Nurse’s Notes Breakfast is not served after 7:55 each morning. If you want your child to have breakfast at school, you must make sure that he/she is in the cafeteria before this time. This is strictly enforced to insure that your child will not be counted tardy for class . Flu Season In the United States, the flu season is generally considered between October and May with the peak of the season falling between late December and March. However, overall the flu varies from year to year. Unfortunately, infection, hospitalizations, and deaths can’t be predicted, but by knowing about flu treatment and prevention options, you can be better prepared to face the flu season.
