Just released on December 19th, Military Advanced Education (MAE) has awarded Saint Leo University the designation of a Top Military-Friendly University in its 2014 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities. (www.mae-kmi.com) MAE’s 2014 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges & Universities provides potential students with information about institutions that go out of their way to give back to our men and women in uniform. Some of the criteria used to evaluate a school’s level of “military friendliness” include the flexibility of online learning options, extent of transfer credits accepted Servicemember Opportunity Colleges (SOC) participation, support provided to the families of servicemembers, faculty trained in veteran reintegration issues, and presence on military installations. “Saint Leo University has remained firm in our commitment to helping veterans and active-duty servicemembers achieve their educational goals,” said Arthur F. Kirk, Jr., president of Saint Leo University. “Educating those who serve defines who we are as a university and a community. We prepare our graduates to serve God, country, and community. This designation reaffirms our commitment to the military, now 40 years standing,” Dr. Kirk added. Read more about this award at more at www.saintleo.edu. Here at the Shaw Center, many of our students are working adults juggling the obligations of family, school, and career. So one of the most common questions we hear from students nearing the end of their degree is, “Do I REALLY have to do an internship?” For students pursuing a degree in their current career field, the answer is “no.” We have alternatives in place for students who already have experience in their chosen field. But for students who are changing career fields or who have not established themselves in a career yet, internships are an opportunity for invaluable experience. A quick google search for the benefits of internships brings up dozens of articles from sites such as CNN, Forbes, US News, and New York Times. The overwhelming consensus is that internships are not only beneficial to students, they are almost necessary to be competitive in the job market after college. In addition to giving you critical “on the job” experience to add to your resume, benefits of internships also include: • The opportunity to "test drive" a career (Would I be happier in marketing or advertising? Am I more comfortable working with patients or in a lab?) • Chances to network • Establishing relationships with mentors • Possible college credit or certification • An introduction to the field's culture and etiquette (Are clients addressed by their first name? Are jeans appropriate for Casual Friday?) • Accumulating new skills • Gaining a "real world" perspective on an occupation (How much overtime do employees really work? How much time is spent behind a desk versus in the field?) Many of our degree plans include an internship requirement, and those that do not have the option of adding one. For more information about internship opportunities you can check out our career planning site http://www.saintleo.edu/resources/career-planning/ internships.aspx or speak with your advisor. Saint Leo University Blog “Don’t you just love the launch of a new year? It’s a fresh start. The gift of a new beginning. The opportunity to commit to changes that can make our lives and the lives of others better.” In the Saint Leo Blog they explore ten resolutions all online students should make. “Statistics show that 45 percent of Americans usually make resolutions, and those resolutions focus on four things: self-improvement and education, weight, money, and relationships. According to Saint Leo University Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Tammy Zacchilli, people like to make resolutions because, when we look back on the previous year’s accomplishments, we see things we would have liked to have done but didn’t. ‘By making New Year’s resolutions, we can develop a plan to reach those goals in the new year. It gives us something to work toward,’ says Dr. Zacchilli.” Some of the resolutions Dr. Zacchilli recommends for online students include getting to know your professors, getting involved, and making time for yourself. Financial Aid New student must apply for financial aid. Make sure you visit www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete the 2013-2014 FAFSA form. Once complete, monitor your student email and eLion account for important updates. If you still have questions, you can call student financial services 800-240-7658 Saint Leo University is important to all of us, and we expect all faculty, staff, and students to adhere to our core values. Below are some reminders about rules and etiquette that will help everyone have a positive experience in their time at Saint Leo. Class Attendance Students must attend on-ground classes, email your CDROM professor, or log-on to the Distance Learning system during the first week of the semester, depending on the type of classes you are taking. Failure to attend or logon will result in you being removed from classes and not being reinstated. Do not blame the staff or academic advisors for your failure to follow protocol. Missing the first week of the term will impact your access to financial aid, tuition assistance, and VA benefits. If you are dropped for nonattendance your professor must approve your readmission to class. No Children in Class The policy manual clearly states that no children are allowed in classrooms or in other areas of the building (lobby, waiting rooms, etc.) This includes both minor and adult children. Having anyone other than Saint Leo students, faculty, and staff in the buildings creates not only a distraction, but a safety concern as well. No Food or Drinks in Class No food or drinks in class other than bottled water. We are guests of Shaw Air Force Base and need to respect their wishes. The same applies to the Wise Drive Church location. Crumbs, wrappers, etc. make for an unpleasant classroom environment and can invite unwanted pests into the buildings. No Smoking Federal law prohibits smoking within 50 feet or a government building. We ask you to follow the same policy at the Sumter Office. Please dispose of used cigarettes in the appropriate receptacles . Need Books? Please visit bookstore.mbsdirect.ne t/saintleo.htm to order your books. Make sure you allow enough time for delivery before classes begin! Sumter Office Hours We now have open office hours at the Sumter Office to accommodate civilian students. 2751 S. Wise Dr. Tuesday 2pm-7pm Thursday 2pm-6pm 803-469-0028 SLU STUDENTS ON SHAW AFB Saint Leo University and its students are guests of Shaw AFB and must always act as such. Recent changes from security forces have changed the way SLU students are allowed to access the base. Effective January 1, 2012 only students taking a class that is located on Shaw AFB will be placed on the base access list. Students not taking classes on Shaw and who do not have their own access to the base will have to schedule an appointment to be sponsored by a Shaw Center employee to come to the office. Also, students who are on the access list will only be allowed to come on the base for their class. Class times will be listed on the access sheet and anyone attempting to access the base other than for their scheduled class will be turned away. Please be aware that any time you enter a Department of Defense facility you are consenting to the possible search of your vehicle and personal belongings. This is a matter of National Defense and you can be selected for a random search at any time. In addition to adhering to posted speed limits, there are some additional rules and procedures that need to be followed. Documentation: Any time you are on the base you need to have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and current vehicle registration with you. You will need to be able to show them if asked. Seatbelts: Seatbelts must be worn at all times while on Shaw AFB. Cell Phones: Cell phones cannot be used while driving on Shaw AFB unless they are in a handsfree mode. If you are spotted with your phone in your hands you can be fined and may lose base access. Honors: At 5:00 pm daily, the sound of Retreat and the National Anthem are played over the installation loud speaker while the flag is lowered at base headquarters. If you are driving in your car, you need to come to a complete stop until the music has ended. If you are standing outside, you need to stand facing the music with your hand (or hat) over your heart.
