We hope to provide everyone with his or her favorite libations. To make the Marine House work as well as possible, we need a few volunteers. You all remember the word “volunteers” don’t you? As usual, no experience is necessary and that’s why the pay is lousy. No kidding, if you can tend bar for a few hours some time during the reunion, please let me know. Any ideas or suggestions for the Marine House Bar please email to me at: amustangsandy@netzero.com. Hope to see everyone in St. Louis. As with any New Year everyone wants to get off on the right foot and press forward. My hope this year is to see more members participate in committee work or just volunteer, “spare time.” Committee chairs and board members can be contacted by e-mail or phone if there’s a committee that interests you, or need more information. As a matter of fact, we need a volunteer to step up to the plate ASAP because after many years of service Lance Parcell, MEGA’s WebMaster, must step down from this position and devote more time to his wife and family. For anyone interested in this important position, Lance will help in the transition offering assistance as needed. For his dedication and Marine Corps Esprit de Corps, we owe Lance our gratitude. Wally Calderon Extraordinaire Marine House Bar Dude I would also like to remind our members of the MEGA General Membership meeting to be held during the reunion’s official business. Members are encouraged to submit agenda items for Board discussion. Please e-mail or contact me, any board member or committee chair for assistance. 2010 MEGA Ladies Lunch Ladies, remember the couture Hat Day in San Diego? This year we’re having a Recycle Luncheon and no, I don’t mean recycled food. Ugh! What a thought. On Saturday, April 24th (11:00 am - 1:00 pm), our luncheon will include a great opportunity to reduce, reuse or recycle something new, something old, or something you’d love even if someone else took it home. So, bring what you’d like and exchange it with someone else: no rules apply. Finally, I would like to thank Chuck Norris for his outstanding work in getting the St. Louis reunion organized and planned. It has been a difficult past couple of months for most, due to severe weather, but I look forward to better spring weather and seeing everyone in St. Louis. I’m hoping the recycle theme will exceed our last event. The event provides a wonderful opportunity to spend time with new and old friends, share a good story and a few laughs. Please contact me for any questions. Thanks - Be Safe - Zelda Simper Fi IKE, Chairman juanrocha3@aol.com 2 Military Reunion Planners (MRP) has made arrangements for the optional tour of Historic St. Charles and/or the Ameristar Casino. St. Louis is appealing and easy to visit from the hotel by MetroLink, the city’s rapid transit system. MetroLink also runs to and from the airport. Please check out the hotel website: www.unionstationmarriott.com for hotel info and things to see and do in St. Louis. MEGA REUNION 2010, ST.LOUIS, MISSOURI By the time this newsletter hits your mailbox, it will be about two months until the MEGA 2010 Gateway to the West Reunion at the Union Station Marriot in St. Louis, Missouri. See you in St. Louis. By now, you should have received the Reunion Registration Forms. It will help us in our final planning if you return that form with your check as promptly as possible. The hotel still has rooms available at the contracted rate of $111.00 that includes a hot buffet breakfast each morning. That rate is available until March 22, 2010, after which the rate returns to the rack rate of $180.00+. Call 800-410-9914 for reservations and request the Marine Embassy Guard Association rate. I’ve managed to get reduced parking at $12.00 per day and am still trying to negotiate a better rate. The banquet dinner price for guests is $45.00 per person, which should be sent to MRP along with your registration. It can also be paid upon registration, but for meal planning, we need a head count 72 hours prior to the banquet. From my view, as your Membership Chairperson, our organization is healthy and growing and most important: we are attracting younger MSGs. We can all agree, this is especially significant during the current economic downturn. Many members are doing double duty and our organization is growing so please volunteer to help make your association even better. Report on the Membership Renewal Project One of our goals was to contact all non-renewing MEGA Members who ever belonged to our association to see if we could “bring them back.” E-mail was sent to every former member whose original roster information included an e-mail address. Letters were sent to all former members whose e-mails bounced and to former members with no email address. Of the 476 letters mailed only 113 were returned without a forwarding address. This information will save time and money in future attempts to contact those members. Passings - Lest We Forget David Bigbie LM-1099 - Jerusalem 1953-55 John Osborn RM-737 - Seoul 1959-60 Gail L. Christmas lights and Salvation Army bell ringers set the atmosphere for the Holidays in the City by the Bay. Eighteen guests dined at the San Francisco Marines Memorial’s Flying Leatherneck Room marking the 6th consecutive year of this annual dinner. Salmon steaks, roast chicken, prime rib, or prawns were as popular as the cocktail hour before, after, and during dinner. Lou and Mary Chatelle drove up from San Diego and while there was no prize, the travel effort was praise worthy. Marty Desmond joined former Moscow detachment member John Ezell were with us once again, and they in-turn brought one of their fellow watch-standers, Peter Wyles. The flu caught a few of our regulars off guard and had to cancel, but we added Chuck and Maria Martinez and Chuck and Heran Newsome to our roles. Jim and Patricia Quinn didn’t have to fly or ride to the affair; they walked from their San Francisco home with their guest and former Sea Going Marine Ray Amend. Dick and Barbara Emory were there. These two met in Hong Kong when Barbara worked for the State Department. MEGA’s Newsletter Printer Chuck Moseman and his guest Vera Loskutoff were with us for their third time. Ed and Suzanne Vasgerdsian were qua-si hosts and everyone is looking forward to another get together next year. Any plans on visiting SF next December, please join us for dinner. edV Bring Your Photos to the 2010 MEGA Reunion Photo Collection Center Our MEGA Historical Archives Photo Gallery has over 5,800 photos & images. The class included 12 new Detachment Commanders and 87 MSG watch standers. The new Marine Embassy Security Guards are being dispatched across the 147 Detachments located in 133 countries including such exotic places such as Australia, Vietnam, Jordan, Iraq, Ukraine, Burma, El Salvador, Zambia and many others. Desert Storm before retiring in January 1993. Among his many decorations are two Distinguished Service Medals and ten personal awards for combat including two Silver Stars and the Purple Heart. The class recognized several of their own for outstanding achievements during their training cycle including the following Marines: Brig. Gen Draude recounted for the graduates a story regarding the exemplary actions of the MSGs at the US Embassy in Prague during the 1968 invasion by the USSR where they defied the orders of the invading Soviet Army and continued to raise and lower the US Flag on a daily basis. This was presented as an example of Marines doing what is right and never backing down from doing their duty regardless of the circumstances or danger. The General concluded his remarks by stating MSGs are the very best of the Corps and our country and serve as one of our country’s finest examples of America. SNOIC Honor Graduate - SSgt. Murray J. Young Jr. MSG Honor Graduate - Cpl. Gabriel T. Goecks MSG Distinguished Graduates LCpl. Sammy D. Smith Jr. & Sgt. Paul A. Frick Top Gun Award - Sgt. Paul A. Frick SNCO Leadership Award - GySgt. Brig.Gen Draude currently serves as the President and CEO of the Marine Corps University Foundation and the Distinguished Chair of Military Studies at the Marine Corps University. Gene Frantz, Board Liaison Letters To the Editor Dallas/Ft. Worth MEGA NEWS I would like to recognize our Secretary and Treasurer, Kevin Hermening, for the fine job he does when a person makes a charitable contribution to the MEGA scholarship fund. A contribution to the fund may be made for an individual in recognition of a passing family member or friend, or as an advanced planning tool for a year-end or lifetime tax deduction. Kevin sends written “thanks” to the family member. Nicely done. Our Marine Corps Birthday celebration was held on November 7th. Six MEGA Members and mates held muster at 1630 hours at Joe & Susie Mitchell’s home. Susie provided us with a great meal of melt in-your mouth beef tenderloin, and Joe provided the beverages of choice. Later we watched the Commandant’s Birthday Message, toasted the Corps, and cut the cake. The youngest Marine present was Mike Laumann and the oldest was Ralph Caton. Mention of Kevin’s work serves as a gentle reminder of there being such an outlet available for MEGA scholarship funding. Bill Allen, Social Director Semper Fi, Clark Mayer, Paris FR 66-69 6 Corps General, and if one General wasn’t enough another phony General got caught trying to pull the same crap in Ramona, CA in 2009. One clown showed up at his high school reunion wearing Dress blues and M/Sgt stripes with enough medals to cover his entire chest, including the Navy Cross. At another time this same clown was wearing a Lt/Col uniform…very sick guy and the beat goes on. MEGA Marine House By Ed Vasgerdsian MEGA Marine House is dedicated to bringing you bits of info about the past, present and future. After all, if there was anything happening, it happened at the Marine House. From Marine Corps Archives: Marine Embassy Guards selected in the 1948-49 stages were to be single, in their second enlistment, at least second generation Americans, cleared by the FBI, and having good military bearing with better-than-average intelligence. Despite earlier memos regarding disclosure, those Marines assigned to non-uniformed countries were issued Special Passports with a non-military identity because the nature of their work was considered confidential. In selecting what Marines were to be sent to what posts, an individual’s language capability was considered but not used as a determining factor. Also, Marines would not be posted in countries where they have relatives living. Havana, Cuba, received 6 Embassy Guards in November 1948, followed by 11 to Cairo, 41 to Jerusalem, and 20 to Seoul, Korea. * I spent a few days in D.C. last April doing research for a Leatherneck story on the Office of Legislative Affairs (OLA). A former MSG and currently a 1st Sergeant, Bradley Simmons serves with M/Sgt William “Spanky” Gibson as the first enlisted personnel to serve as legislative assistants to Congress. Gibson, an above the knee amputee swam from Alcatraz Island to shore to prove his physical ability. He then made a third tour to Iraq. Gibson and Simmons will be rotated out by two other enlisted Marines, one of whom is also a former MSG and Quantico school instructor. * A few newsletters back I talked about B. G. Burkett and Glenn Whitley’s book, STOLEN VALOR. I gave the book high marks for bringing into focus a muchneeded subject: bogus medals worn by fake war heroes. The book raised America’s conscience on the issue, which up until then had not received much attention. Despite the book’s publication date (1998) and wide spread information on the subject, war phonies continue to crawl out of the woodwork. December 8, 2009 Sacramento Bee: “Sacramento man admits to faking military medals.” August 10, 2005, the Associated Press had a story about a phony Marine The subject is taken seriously enough to have the discussion continued in an article by Russell Working in the Nov/Dec Edition of Columbia Journalism Review (CJR). Mr. Working poses the question, what of the journalists who bring this subject to our (the reader’s) attention taking a source’s claim at face value… “then dig in and refuse to correct the record when confronted with documentation to the contrary.” What do we do with these fakes? How do we distinguish between the guy wearing a chest full of undeserved medals on a poorly fitted uniform while leading a parade down Main Street USA with that of the real creeps who receive money and benefits from their phony claims? Or, is there no difference? Lest we think these phonies are all Males, CJR indicates that journalists writing about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the cost of rehabilitation and assistance discovered six women “who claimed their disorder had been caused by being prisoners of war.” This, despite the fact that “not a single American military women was ever a prisoner of war.” These are the true criminals… a pox on them! * A guy named Van T. Barfoot who’s fighting a another battle, of a different type than what we normally call “battle”, and it’s with the Sussex Square Home Owners Association in VA. Seems the association doesn’t like Mr. Barfoot’s American flagpole. Members of his Congressional District got involved and others joined in on his behalf. Although there may be signs the association is backing down, not all members agree and say, rules are rules. By the way, Mr. Barfoot is 90 years old and the recipient of the Medal of Honor for heroism in Europe during WW II. This is a guy who, “stood up to three advancing Mark VI tanks and fired on one with a bazooka, scaring the other two away.” The ranks of this homeowners association must be filled with far too many demented yahoos to think Mr. Barfoot is going to back down. 7 edV Marine Embassy Guard Association P.O.
