Both of my sons were pretty fair ball players growing up and I was thru memorabilia from the double 00 years and came upon this MEGA auction item. Deear MEGA Members, Well I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer? The kids/grandkids are back in school, Hoorah! Fall officially starts in a few weeks, but you wouldn’t be able to tell that down here in sunny Florida. It’s still 98 degrees and humid. Soon our attention will turn toward the holidays and all that it brings. I remember your auctioneering sales pitch in San Diego went something like, “the Colonel told me this is the last baseball he will ever sign?” No, this baseball will not return to auction. It has become part of our family heritage even though my eldest son Westin is a Red Sox fan leaning toward St. Louis. He has a high school buddy named Tyler Lions who pitches some for St. Louis. Our 2015 reunion will be in Providence, RI in early June and as soon as the details are finalized the crucial information will be sent out to all members. And that brings to mind: Please take a moment to visit our webpage making sure your contact information is up-to-date. In our last newsletter I urged you, our members, to come up with ways to grow our organization. Several ideas have been put forth and I encourage everyone to keep brainstorming and send me you ideas. Without active participation in the growth of our association we will become stagnant. Based upon the members’ input as well as discussions with my fellow board members, I am looking for a member who has a background in marketing/advertising committee and would volunteer to chair a committee under the same name. The goal of this committee is to maximize the exposure of MEGA through traditional and non-traditional means, including the Internet. Any member interested in helping should contact me directly at the email address below. Semper Fi, Cpl. Ernie Tucker, MEGA Life Member 398 Editor’s Response: Ernie let me first response by way of telling those that don’t know who the Colonel was. Jerry Coleman was a Major League Baseball (MLB) second baseman for the New York Yankees and manager of the San Diego Padres, rookie of the year in 1949, All-Star in 1950 and later that year named the World Series most valuable player. Yankees teams on which he was a player appeared in six World Series during his career, winning four times. Coleman served as a Marine Corps combat pilot in both WWII and Korea. He later became a broadcaster for the San Diego Padres. The Colonel passed away Jan 5, 2014. Second, I’d like to give a shout out to your bright, knowledgeable, and insightful son, Westin, “Go Red Sox! Another area that I’m seeking member involvement is our scholarship auction. I have handled the silent auction for the past few years and Ed has been our go-to-guy for the live auction since…well none of us can remember how far back? It’s time for us to pass the torch and get some new blood involved. Again if anyone is interested in stepping up to the plate and taking the auction to the next level please drop me a note. As it turns out there has been a detachment in Hanoi for nearly 20 years and from what I was able to find from Facebook, it’s not a bad place to serve on MSG Duty. A Marine Corps Ball in Hanoi! For most Vietnam veterans, the very idea of Marines serving in Hanoi, much less a Marine Corps Ball being held in Hanoi is not easily comprehended. However, with nearly 40 years of water under the bridge including the Fall of Saigon, and our P.O.W.’s return home, things have indeed changed. By Ken Crouse (Saigon RVN ’75, Asmara ET ’75, Brussels BE 1975-77) I served on Embassy Duty between January of 1975 and June of 1977. My first post was the American Embassy in Saigon and I was one of the last MSGs to serve there. The events of Operation Frequent Wind are well chronicled so I won’t delve into them. As we were leaving a suggestion was made to continue this yearly event at Progressive Field. Will do! Hopefully with a different score? The Boxers besieged the Legation Quarter of Peking (Beijing), a delegation of U.S. and seven other nations. Capt. John (Handsome Jack) Myers, USMC, formed a “Legation Guard” unit. The Marines, supported by British and Russian troops, repelled a Boxer attack on the legation. Of this battle, thirtyfour Marines won the Medal of Honor, and later, three officers became Commandants: William P. Biddle, Wendell C. Neville, and Ben H. Fuller. By Lou Gallo (London GB 1959-61) In May of last year, retired U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker said, “I think people come before paper. I just don’t think it makes sense any longer that the primary duty [for MSGs] is to protect classified documents. It’s to protect lives.” Crocker continued, “I really do think it’s time that the Marine Corps and the State Department relook at the memorandum of agreement and rules of engagement because that was written effectively in the pre-terror days.” Indeed, much of the world is in turmoil and protecting U.S. diplomatic posts is increasingly dangerous. Raiding embassies and taking hostages seems to be in vogue and it is time to adapt; but this is nothing new or difficult for Marines. A more contemporary point of view is the Fall of Saigon in 1975. MSGs protected the embassy and helped evacuate over 7,200 people during “Operation Frequent Wind”. Besides enemy troops, the MSGs dealt with throngs of refugees clamoring to escape. Two MSGs lost their lives, but the MSGs persevered and were the last American military to leave—just hours before the enemy seized the Presidential Palace. Combat readiness is an integral part of the incredible legend of Marine Security Guards. Prompted by mounting threats, Congress approved the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, which authorizes an additional 1,000 MSGs to reinforce embassy security and staff 35 new posts. Furthermore, a specially trained and equipped “Marine Security Augmentation Unit”, a crisis-response group of some 120 MSGs is ready to support units in the field when called upon. In August 2013, Colonel Frank E. Wendling, Commanding Officer, MCESG published a letter in which he stated, “In this ‘post-Benghazi’ era, there is an even greater emphasis on our ability to be more alert, more ready, and more pro-active when it comes to the security of our diplomatic missions, than ever in our history.” Another example of that period is the Iran hostage of 1979. It continues to remain a haunting memory for Americans, and a very traumatic episode for those directly involved. Radical Iranian students occupied the U.S. embassy and held fifty-two Americans hostage for 444 days. This is another case where certain rules of engagement would have made a difference. One of the MSG captives said during a recent interview, The State Department establishes rules of engagement for each post, and adapting to new rules has never been an issue for MSGs. Going back to pre-terror days, beyond the founding of Embassy Marines in 1948 and soon after its inception in 1775, Marines have provided security for the State Department. “I hate to say it, but I regret to this day not ever pulling a trigger on Nov. 4, 1979. We need to start showing our enemy that we mean business.” An extreme example is the security breach in Benghazi, Syria, in 2012. Radical Islamists brutally murdered four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens—the first U.S Ambassador killed while on duty since 1979. No Marine Guards were there; otherwise, the outcome would likely have been different. Marines have a proud and colorful history of protecting American interests abroad. After the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), USMC First Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon bolstered a detachment of Marines with 500 Greek and Arab mercenaries, and fought the “Battle of Derne” in Tripoli, Syria. The first recorded U.S. land battle on foreign soil, the mission was to: reinstate the U.S. backed heir to the throne of Tripoli who was in exile. The battle rooted the lyrics “to the shores of Tripoli” in the Marine Corps Hymn. A life member of MEGA, Lou Gallio served as a MSG in London, 59-61. Lou is also the Houston Homeland Security writer for “Examiner.com” In this new world order, we are adapting to new, formidable security threats to our diplomatic missions. “Adapting” is the operative word—adapting to changing conditions is one of the strongest attributes of the U.S. Marine Corps. 6 MEGA Marine House Okay, I’ve Calmed Down By Ed Vasgerdsian, Newsletter Editor MEGA Marine House is dedicated to bringing you bits of info about the past, present and future. After all, if there was anything happening, it happened at the Marine House. What the Hell is Going On? On August 12, 2012 an MSG posted in Athens, Greece, Sergeant Brian J. Laloup committed suicide after some heavy drinking. This is an undisputed fact but the pain and suffering of his parents continues. Adding to this tragedy, his parents discovered “weeks after his funeral that his body had been sent home without a heart — and that the Department of Defense later gave them somebody else’s heart in its place.” …”Government immunity prevents the family from filing a wrongful-death lawsuit. Their lawsuit instead seeks damages for emotional distress over the missing heart. But mostly, the family wants answers.” *** The only thing I wish in regard to the Bergdahl case is that there is full disclosure. If this guy is guilty as accused I want to know what evidence they had on him. I don’t want to hear a lot of BS amounting to a cover up. If the guy didn’t do anything to cause injury to his fellow troops, or disgrace to the uniform I want to know that too. My fear is a cover-up as was attempted in Ganjgal, a remote village near the Pakistan border. According to Marine Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyers in his book, “Into the Fire: A Firsthand Account of the Most Extraordinary Battle in the Afghan War,” during the battle in Ganjgal Army officers at nearby Forward Operating Base refused to send artillery support despite repeated pleas from those in the maelstrom. It took a long time before the truth to come out because it was cover your ass time. Public awareness caused the Army to act and the two officers received letters of reprimand, which reminds me of Mommy waving her finger and saying, “And don’t do that again.” *** On and on… and on and on it goes: The senseless case against three Scout-Sniper Marines urinating on the corpse of dead insurgents. It happened three years ago! Fingers are still being pointed. What’s the sense and please don’t say, its about leadership. The absurd pursuit is over for at least one of those three Marines. Twenty-eight year old Cpl. Rob Richards died and was buried. They say, he died of complications to medication and I wonder, oh how I wonder how much of it was caused by those who put this man through incredible harassment. A pox on them all! 7 With all that is being offered our “Vets” by way of jobs, its no wonder we start thinking how it was for us past of present, to find a job when we were discharged? We all have our stories. So, think back a little, if you have access to job announcements or opportunities share them. MEGA Member Max Wix is an outstanding example of someone doing just that: helping others. For inclusive information on how to go about it please go to: www.marineea.org. *** It’s hard to argue against the proposed pay cuts for MSGs and D.I.s since a pay cut is far better than losing the manpower. The 2nd Coming of (fill in the blank)? Our U.S. Armed Forces collectively speaking are spiritually tolerant and inclusive. Be ye Catholic, Protestant, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, and Sikh, and whatever else I may have overlooked, we are free to practice our faith as we see fit… there are exceptions like beheading animals and sacrificing virgins. Soon military personnel will be able to follow a new religion called “Humanists.” Administered by atheist chaplains, there is no God, nor religious affiliation. The Humanists are asking for some type of representation along with other chaplains. Some guy is raising money for religious freedom and meanwhile it has been reported that this Elmer Gantryesque is making a tidying sum for himself. If you want to believe or not believe in God, Zeus, or Sasquatch you don’t need a specific place to practice religion or a person to lead you in prayer. As soon as as this “Humanist” movement is formalized as it purports to do, you formalize the receipt and payment of $$$$. Reminds of a kid from Revere MA I met in Boot Camp. When the DI called out for Catholic services he lined up. He also lined up for Protestant and Jewish services. He quietly told me it was the only time he could get away with smoking. When he was called out by the DI and asked whether he was Catholic, Protestant or Jew he said, “I don’t know sir, I haven’t made up my mind.” Under Non-Military Ever wonder why the media pays the respect to those who have been accused or convicted of the most heinous crimes imaginable by referring to them as “Mr. or Mrs.? …killed his wife and family, burned down the farm and ran off with the Mayor’s daughter…left her two children alone in a cabin in the dead of winter to attend a party, and so on.
