Towns of Jefferson County
Jefferson County, located in the heart of East Tennessee,
is surrounded by natural beauty. With the Great Smoky Mountains in
the South, the Clinch Mountains to the north, and beautiful rivers and
lakes both in and around the county, Jefferson County has a great
deal to offer its visitors as well as its residents. The rivers, including
the French Broad and Holston, and the mountains were instrumental
in attracting the first settlers to this scenic area.
Jefferson County, which was originally part of North Carolina and then part of the state of Franklin, became part of Tennessee
when the state was formed in 1796. On June 11, 1792, William
Blount, Governor of the “Territory South of the Ohio” (as Tennessee
was called at the time), created both Knox and Jefferson Counties
and took steps to lay off Jefferson County from Greene and Hawkins
Counties, of which it was once apart. Jefferson County, named for
Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence
and the third President of the United States, was divided in 1794 to
create Sevier County, in 1797 to create Cocke County, and again in
1870 to create Hamblen County.
Jefferson County has five incorporated cities: Dandridge
(incorporated in 1843), White Pine (1893), Jefferson City (1901), New
Market (1977), and Baneberry (1986). From the pristine waters to
the breathtaking views of the Great Smoky Mountains, this area’s
natural resources are perfect for the discerning traveler who desires
an authentic cultural experience.

2012 EDITION
Dandridge, which has been the
county seat of Jefferson County Since
1792 when the county was first organized is the second oldest city in the
state of Tennessee and the only city in
the nation named for Martha Dandridge Custis Washington, the wife of
our first president a fact that enabled
the city to avoid being flooded by TVA.
The same courthouse that was built
and used in 1845 is still used today
and is the oldest courthouse still in use
in the state.
The courthouse is also home of the
county museum which contains many
Indian artifacts, firearms, Civil War
relics, and well-preserved documents
concerning the history of Jefferson
County. Two items of great interest
that can be found in the museum are
the original plat of Dandridge, dated
1793, and the original marriage bond
of Davy Crockett and Polly Finley,
dated August 12, 1806. Today Dandridge is an example of a town that
embraces its historic past while still
looking to the future.

New Market, TN
Jefferson City, TN
New Market is an historic town that
once was home to famous writer Francis Hodgson Burnett, author of such
noted classics as Little Lord Fauntleroy, The Secret Garden, and The Little
Princess. There is no doubt that the
beautiful rolling hills and scenic views
of New Market must have inspired her.
New Market is also home to River
Glen Equestrian Park which is located
on the Holston River. The property
ranges from river bottoms to wooded
ridge tops offering spectacular views
of Clinch Mountain. The park hosts the
River Glen Horse Trails and many
other important equestrian events.
This lovely town is also the site of the
famous New Market Train Wreck of
1904.
Originally known as the Town of
Mossy Creek, Jefferson City was renamed in 1901 by State Senate Bill
124, signed by Governor Benton
McMillan. Lumbering was the first big
industry other than farming. Today
Jefferson City is one of the largest
cities in Jefferson County and is the
location of Carson-Newman College, a
private liberal arts school that consistently achieves national acclaim.
Jefferson City is also home to many
businesses and restaurants. With
beautiful Cherokee Lake on the Northwest border and Patriot Hills Golf Club,
one will find that there is much to see
and experience here.
White Pine, TN
Baneberry, one of Tennessee’s
most beautiful cities, lies 40 miles east
of Knoxville on a peninsula jutting into
the Douglas Lake portion of the
French Broad River. The residential
community with its attractively landscaped homes has spectacular views
of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Residents and guests enjoy immediate access to the recreational advantages of the Baneberry Golf Club
and Resort, and to boating and fishing
in Douglas Lake and nearby ponds.
With its water and woodland trails and
abundant wild life to be explored, the
locale has the peaceful feeling of a
nature preserve, while at the same
time offering the services and amenities of suburban-type living.
White Pine is located off Interstate
81 one of the busiest stretches of interstate in the entire country near the
northeast portion of the county. Incorporated in 1901, the town is today
home of the Smoky Mountain Expo
Center, a 6,000 seat arena managed
by Walters State Community College.
White Pine is also home to a little over
2000 people. The town sits far enough
away from the busy interstate to still
keep its small town feel, but close
enough to allow visitors easy access
to the many attractions of the area.
Slowdown and enjoy the artistry of the
Smoky Mountain Quilt Trail as you
pass through beautiful countryside.

Lost Creek Golf Club is a public daily fee
golf facility located just minutes from
Knoxville and the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park. Lost Creek is a very unusual and challenging course. The back 9
holes are built inside the perimeter of the
front 9 holes. Built on hilly terrain in the
foothills of the Smokies, all the holes are
bordered by beautiful, mature trees and ponds affect play on two of the
holes. The greens are medium-sized and slightly elevated and the
majority of the fairways are wide. However, hole 16 will challenge anyone’s skill. The 532 yard par 5 winds up a very narrow fairway to a
small elevated green.
Jefferson County is
rapidly becoming
synonymous with
great golf. As one
of the first golf
courses built in the
area, Dandridge
Golf & Country
Club has developed
a reputation as an
enjoyable round of golf for the beginner or the seasoned professional.
The original 18 holes, designed by Dan Maples, meanders its
way through valleys, hills, and woodlands. Then, in 1991, nine more
holes were added with the same characteristics or the original design,
bringing the area's first 27 hole golf complex. And if the course itself
doesn't offer enough scenic beauty, you will often find yourself pausing
to admire the views of the Great Smokey Mountains and Douglas Lake.
Dandridge offers the same lush bermuda fairways and bentgrass green
as it's sister course (Patriot Hills).
All combinations are par-72 and measure approximately
6,100 yards from the back tees, 5,800 yards from the regular tees, and
4,900 yards from the forward tees. Dandridge is a public course.

The crown jewel of golf in
this area is our newest
course, Patriot Hills Golf
Club. The largest development in Jefferson County,
Patriot Hills was opened in
the Spring of 1997 to rave
reviews. "The best new
course in East Tennessee"
being just one!
At it's inception, Patriot Hills was intended to be more challenging than it's sister course (Dandridge). With a similar design, the
course has proved to be as tough as you want it to be. The par 72
course measures 6,710 yards from the back tees, 6,068 yards from the
regular tees, 5,609 yards from the senior tees, and 4,974 yards from the
forward tees.
Patriot Hills offers the same lush bermuda fairways and bentgrass greens as the Dandridge course. The scenery is quite spectacular
as well, affording the golfer many scenic views of English Mountain and
the Great Smokey Mountains. Patriot Hills is open to the public.
