Borrow, grow and return with new seed library!
Seed Library grand opening
Sunday, June 8, 2 to 4 p.m.,
Rawlings, 2nd floor
Something new and exciting
has sprouted on the 2nd floor
of Rawlings Library! Near the
magazines is an old card catalog
that will soon be full of seeds for
patrons to take and plant.
All Pueblo Grows Seed Lending
Library is a partnership of the
Colorado Master Gardeners of
Pueblo County, CSU Extension—
Pueblo County, Pueblo CityCounty Library District and
Keep Pueblo Beautiful.
The seed library's mission is
to provide community outreach
and education about the time
honored tradition of preserving
seed. This will foster sustainability,
self-reliance and the cultivation
of locally adapted plants through
the maintenance of a community
supported seed bank.
Seeds in the catalog are grouped
into categories, then alphabetized
by variety. Seed packets are color
coded according to how difficult
it is to harvest the seeds. If new to
saving seed, start with the green,
or easy seeds. Yellow seeds are for
more experienced seed savers, and
red are for the advanced.
Plants which thrive in Pueblo's climate will be available to checkout at the Rawlings Library.
a maximum of 10 seed packets,
just like they would check out
any other library material. There
is no due date, but they will be
expected to collect seeds at the end
of the growing period and turn
them back into the seed library for
the following year.
Patrons are asked to return the
harvested seeds in an envelope
with the following information
included: Name, contact phone
or email, species, variety, date,
how hard to save and quantity.
Happy planting!

Read to suceed this summer
by Jon Walker
I am very excited about this
summer’s reading fun for young
people that is available at the
library. The Pueblo City-County
Library District is sponsoring
activities this summer designed
to encourage literacy and
celebrate the joy of reading.
Everything kicks off in June and continues into
August.
Our goal is simple. We aim to keep kids
reading all summer long. We don’t focus on
assigned reading or reading for study. Instead,
we emphasize reading for fun.
Read comics, read Manga, read graphic
novels, read fun magazines, read whatever is
entertaining. Just read.
Why is it important for young people to read
for fun during the summer? The short answer is
the simple act of exercising reading skills during
the summer helps keep them sharp for the next
school year. The more you read, the better you
read. Studies show that participation in library
summer reading programs can make a positive
difference in a young person’s long-term reading
and academic achievement, and overall quality
of life.
The library’s Summer Reading program
has continued to increase in popularity and
participation. In 2013, more people were part
of the reading program than ever before. 2014
should be another top-notch summer of reading.
Look for announcements elsewhere in this
newsletter for dates and times of special activities
and events designed to make reading all the rage
this summer. Information also is available at
your local library, on the library’s website, www.
pueblolibrary.org, and in the local media.
I hope the young people in your life are
reading this summer. The library’s Summer
Reading program can help, and it’s free, it’s fun,
and it’s important. It can help establish a positive
foundation for young people to last a lifetime.

with him in Israel. Her arrival coincides with
the outbreak of the second Lebanon war. Libby
quickly discovers that her dad, Shaul, is an
infantile eccentric, and that he is "in-between
apartments" (in other words, homeless). Shaul
comes up with a creative plan to put a roof over
their heads - they pose as refugees from the
bombarded northern region of Israel, and are
taken in by a well-off family in Jerusalem. Finally
in a "normal" household, Shaul and Libby begin
to build their father-daughter relationship, but
their false identities can’t last forever, especially
as Libby unleashes teenage fury at the lies
permeating her life; those she must tell now, and
those she’s been fed since childhood.
