Academic Calendar:
Beginning in the fall of the 2012-2013 school year, Homestead is on a five-period trimester
schedule. The academic school year consists of three trimesters of study, each consisting
of approximately 60 days and ending with a period of two days for final examinations. The
first trimester runs from September 3 to December 4. Student mid-year reports and
transcripts are released to colleges during the last week of December. The second
trimester begins on December 6 and runs through March 11. The third trimester begins on
March 13 and ends on June 12. Graduation for the Class of 2014 is on June 15.
Graduation Requirements:
To retain the rigor and consistency in the high school credit system, the graduation credit
requirements have been modified from the 22 to 24 credits on the trimester system. The
increased number of required credits for graduation will be phased in making the Class of
2016 the first class required to complete 24 credits for graduation. The graduating class of
2014 are required to complete 22.5 credits for graduation. Course requirements for graduation include 2 mathematics, 2 science, 3 social studies, 4 English, 1 fine arts or the .5 credit
Fine Arts Survey course, .5 computer science, 1.5 physical education, .5 health, plus
electives. One credit is awarded for successful completion of a course which meets five
days a week for two trimesters and .5 credit for courses meeting five days a week for one
trimester. A trimester consists of 60 days with each class period lasting approximately 73
minutes long. The minimum course load for students is 4 classes in a five period day.
Students cannot select where their courses fall in the trimester schedule.

Grading System:
The grading scale gives point value to +’s and –’s and is applicable to all students in grades
9-12. All grades are included in the computation of GPA. Students have the option of taking
up to two trimester elective courses during their four years, which may be excluded from
the GPA. These courses will be designated on the transcript with an asterisk.
Honors and Advanced Placement courses are weighted, receiving additional grade
points. The chart below shows the values assigned for both the regular/unweighted and
weighted grading scales.

School & Community
Homestead High School is
located approximately 13 miles
north of Metropolitan Milwau kee. It is a 4-year public high
school, serving students from a
48 square mile area including
the suburbs of Thiensville and
Mequon. Upper middle income
business executives and professional residents account for the
major population. Current
enrollment of the comprehensive high school is 1305. Because 90% of the students are
college bound, college preparatory classes are strongly
emphasized.

Curriculum
Instructional levels are available in English, Science,
Mathematics, and Social Sciences. All science
courses are laboratory oriented. Honors courses often
lead to Advanced Placement courses. Honors
courses are offered in Business, Mathematics,
English, Science, World Language, Project Lead the
Way, Computer Science, and Social Studies. All
Honors courses and Advanced Placement courses
are listed later in this profile and are weighted. Other
programs offered to students are Special Education,
American Field Service, and coordinated dual credit
programs with local colleges. When a student
receives extensive modification of curriculum and/or
assessments for an academic course, its title is listed
as “Essentials” (for example, “Essentials of Biology”).
