Our Mission Statement We, the community of St. Pius X Church, declare Christ’s mission as our own. We joyfully dedicate ourselves to become the presence of God in this community; that through our words and actions, the Gospel of Jesus will be proclaimed by all. Welcome one another… as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 5:7 In the spirit of Jesus, we pledge... To extend ourselves to others, both within and outside our community, to bring about the Kingdom of God, To celebrate our faith together through liturgies that meet the diverse needs of our community, To live our Christian values through service to others, To challenge one another to spiritual growth through the promotion of Christian education. We hear the call of God. We respond with our “Amen.” The Fifth Sunday of Lent St. Pius X Church April 6, 2014 Today’s Scripture PRAYERS Please pray for the sick: Loretta Widman Please pray for the deceased: Theodora O’Keefe Anointing of the Sick: Anointing of the sick will follow immediately after the 8:00 am Sunday Mass weekly in the Memorial Chapel Save the Date Vespers and Eucharist during Lent - Every Thursday evening we will celebrate evening prayer and Eucharist at 6 PM in the Church. Martin Burnham) Ez 37:12-14 Rom 8:8-11 Jn 11:1-45 or Jn 11:3-17, 20-27, 33b-45 The sisters of Lazarus sent word to Jesus, saying, “Master, the one you love is ill.” When Jesus heard this he said, “This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was. Then after this he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” Martha said, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” He became perturbed and deeply troubled, and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Sir, come and see.” And Jesus wept. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him.” But some of them said, “Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?” So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to him, “Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” And when he had said this, He cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, “Untie him and let him go.” Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began to believe in him. Mae Richardson Director of Youth and Children’s Ministry Dear St. Pius X Maggie Dates St. Pius X School Principal mdates@stpius10school.org 410-427-7322 Last week Pope Francis used his twitter feed (@Pontifex) to remind us what Lent is: Pinky Howard Director of Adult and Family Ministry phoward@stpius10.org 410-427-7518 This season is not one where we merely dwell in deprivation, but one where we strive to conform ourselves more fully to Christ in order to live out our Baptism. What an amazing opportunity – and the grace of Christ, and the grace of this Lent has abounded in the lives of our young parishioners! Mae F. While we reflected on all the themes, the Good Deed Trees we created to remind us of our call to Almsgiving seemed to be the biggest hit! Hopefully our Good Deed Trees will help each of us remember to imitate Christ through service to others. On the following Sunday our children preparing to celebrate their First Eucharist attended a morning workshop with their parents. Learning about the order of Mass and preparing to fully participate at the Eucharistic table for the first time, children and their parents talked about the significance of receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. What better reminder is there that we should be striving to reflect Christ than preparing to receive him at the altar? Not to be left out, our HS youth embraced and challenged pop culture during the 3rd week of Lent. For our Divergent Beach Retreat, youth and (exhausted) adults used the book “Divergent” and its five factions to focus on the virtues of Selflessness, Honesty, Peacefulness, Intelligence and Bravery. We also connected the book to Christ’s call to conversion, and agreed that we are all called to be divergent like the story’s main character! This past Sunday, 44 of our parish middle schoolers gathered together to consider the challenges of poverty and the inequitable distribution of world resources. Through a poverty simulation and a Hunger Banquet, we were able to reflect on hard choices those in poverty face, and the structures that make getting out of poverty so hard! And Lent isn’t even over yet! Our Confirmation candidates are preparing to join with Gallagher Services residents for our annual SPX Idol talent show. And for Palm Sunday a group of our high school students will join 900 other youth and the Archbishop in the annual Palm Saturday Pilgrimage to kick off Holy week. It’s certainly been busy, it’s been more than blessed, and it has been filled with opportunities to turn our hearts to Christ! Our prayer is that this Lenten season will be one where we may truly celebrate our baptism, allowing us to fully embrace the Resurrection this Easter.
