JOHN F. BERCHERT, AIA, JOINS STV AS VICE PRESIDENT
New Head of Higher Education National Practice
FAIRFAX, VA, September 27, 2011 – John F. Berchert, AIA, has joined STV as a vice president
and the higher education national practice leader, strengthening the firm’s continued
commitment and service to its clients in the higher education field.
Berchert is based in the firm’s Fairfax, VA, office and reports to Sam Spata, AIA, LEED® AP
BD&C, executive vice president of STV’s Buildings and Facilities Division.
Berchert’s career spans more than 30 years, focusing on facilities planning and design for
colleges and universities. His strong portfolio includes student residences, sports facilities,
student recreation centers, teaching and research laboratories, and classroom/learning centers.
He brings to STV a broad background in the design of research laboratories for corporations and
institutions, healthcare facilities, federal installations, and multi-use developments for corporate
and commercial clients. One example of his notable design work is the recently-completed
science facility at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. The
680,000-square-foot, 11-story research building houses support facilities and clinical, research
and teaching laboratories for BioMed 21, Washington University’s research initiative to rapidly
translate basic research findings into advances in medical treatment.
Berchert received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career on projects such as
the Boston University Fitness and Recreation Center and Agganis Arena, the Suffolk University
Somerset Street Housing project and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute East Hall, all in
Massachusetts. His work at the student residents towers at 33 Harry Agganis Way at Boston
University was featured on NBC’s the Today Show and included in a New York Times article on
new luxury dorms.
Prior to joining STV, Berchert was a design principal at a nationally and internationally
recognized architecture and engineering, planning and design firm with offices throughout North
America and abroad.
Berchert earned a Master of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of
Design and a bachelor’s degree from Vassar College. He is a registered architect in Virginia,
Maryland, the District of Columbia, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, Hawaii, and Ontario,
Canada. He is also a member of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
