Union County is traditionally the top corn producing county in the state and near the top in soybean production. In 2011 Union County farmers produced nearly 12.2 million bushels of corn from 75,000 acres with an average yield of 162.5 bushels per acre. We have a large food processing plant; a new winery and a top of the line horse breeding facility. Our county is also home to one of the largest, if not largest, underground coal mine, River View coal, operated by Alliance Resources with a production of 7.6 million tons in 2011. It has 670 full time and part time employees. And we are also home to the second largest Job Corps Center in the country—the Earle C. Clements Job Corps Academy, on land that once was the site of the Army’s Camp Breckinridge. The Center is named after our former Governor and U.S. Senator Earle Clements, a Union County native. And we are most proud of our James D. Veatch Camp Breckinridge Museum & Arts Center which features a giant mural painted by German POW Daniel Mayer. This mural has gained international attention. There are several smaller murals and also a military museum. Union County also has two golf courses, municipal parks and a municipal swimming pool. The Union County Quilt Trail Project has been established to promote history, cultural arts, education, beautification and tourism in Union County, Kentucky. TRAIL It is a county of people strong and resilient from life’s challenges, yet so friendly. Among our many attractions is the 5,400+ acre Higginson & Henry Wildlife Management Area which includes an 11-mile horseback riding trail, with access to hiking trails, along with an 82-acre lake. The area also includes the Lee K. Nelson Viewing Area which offers plants, mammals and birds, native grasses and shallow water impoundments. The county is also home to the new Big Rivers Wildlife Management Area and State Forest, which encompasses nearly 2,500 acres of land bounded by the Ohio River, Tradewater River and KY 1508 near Sturgis. Many feel it is one of the best deer and turkey hunting areas in the state. There is also the county owned Moffit Lake which offers lodging, hiking, fishing and picnic areas. And the Sloughs Wildlife Management Area is located in Union and adjoining Henderson County. These 10,000 acres, in several tracks, provide outdoor recreational opportunities for various species of game. The county has several boat ramps and one floating dock.
