With AnimeLeague banner/sign Guest of Honour: Monica Rial Q&A Monica Rial is responsible for over 400 voices including Panty and Stocking (Stocking), Tsubasa Chronicles (Sakura), FMA (May Chang/Lyra), Soul Eater (Tsubaki Nakatsukasa), Black Butler (Mei-Rin), HSOTD (Shizuka Marikawa)and more. We ask her a few questions.. 1. How did you get involved voice acting? It was kind of an accident. I mean, I've always been an actor but I never considered being a voice actor. I was doing Shakespeare in the Park one summer when one of my co-stars said I should audition for this company he was working with voicing animation. I told him, "I've never done anything like that before. I don't know..." He laughed and said, "Every story is about teenagers saving the world and you sound like you're five so why not at least try?" He gave me ADV's number and I called to inquire about auditions. Turns out they were having them that weekend so I went and auditioned for Matt Greenfield and Steven Foster. I had a blast at the audition and I was called in to do background voices for Martian Successor Nadesico. After that I was cast in Gasaraki and Generator Gawl. I thought it was just going to be a fun gig while I was going through college but 17 years later it's my career! 2. What's your Favourite character you've voiced and why? As much as I hate to say it, I honestly can't pick one. I've voiced over 400 characters in anime and most of them are ridiculously cool. Seriously, how am I supposed to choose between Bulma, Stocking, MiraJane, Tsubaki, Renge, Belarus, Mey Rin, Tashigi, May Chang, Tomoko, and the others? It's too hard. 3. What are you most looking forward to about London? Meeting new folks and hopefully seeing some familiar faces! London has always been one of my favorite cities in the world and my fiance has never been so I can't wait to see it all through his eyes. Oh, and I have an obsession with Nando's and they haven't made it to Texas yet. Mmmm, chips with peri peri salt here I come! Make sure to catch Monica's talk on stage on Sunday at 4pm, as well as her free signing session at 1pm-3pm. Cosplay World Masters London Anime Gaming Con are proud to host the UK qualifiers for the Cosplay World Masters (CWM), where we'll send our finalist to Portugal. We interview last year's UK finalist, Kenny Cosplay Stuff - Tell us a bit about your costume that won last year's UK qualifiers. What inspired it? How much time and work went into it? I watched Chappie when it first came out and I instantly fell in love with the character. It was such a lovable and funny and I felt like I could bring the character to life. I spent around 2 weeks of research and around 3 months of build time. Researching this character was difficult as it was quite new so reference pictures were low. - A big part of the Cosplay World Master's is it's focus on performance as much as the costume; what was involved with your routine? A lot people under-appreciate how much time and effort it is to make a short performance. I watched the full film around 4-5 times and spent a week picking a choosing the more relavant quotes to be used. A lot of people may not have watched Chappie, a story needed to be told where everyone can relate to and understand. Of course, it would make much more sense if you have watched the movie. This is the first time I planned a performance with a helmet on and I found it extremely difficult to express the character without facial expressions. At the start of the movie, Chappie was born and knew nothing about the world. As the movie went on, Chappie comes out of his shell and becomes a strong confident gangster. I wanted to show the progression of the character in a short two minute performance. There were a few catagories I wanted to fill with the performance that I think would be my selling point; Entertainment, mobility and story. - What was it like to represent the UK at the Cosplay World Masters finals? It was incredible! The build standards are on a completely different level. It was like no other conventions I have been to in the UK. Everyone was so friendly it did not feel like a competition. I went in really nervous and came out with some life long friends. - Finally, do you have any advice those people who are entering this year's qualifiers? Don't enter because you want to win, enter because you enjoy being on stage. This way, you will put more effort and feeling into the performance. Watch the Cosplay World Masters 3pm, Upstairs Stage - the winner will recieve a free trip to Portugal to represent the UK in the finals at IberAnime with a chance to win a 750 Euro grand prize! If you're interested in entering, ask at the signups desk beforehand. Convention Check-List Are you sure you've done everything? Here's 20 things you should do over the weekend. She has had cosplay opportunities for large publishing companies like CAPCOM, Bethesda, 2K and Ubisoft. She has also been involved in hosting and press coverage at large events like E3. We interview her about her cosplaying experiences.. How did you start cosplaying? My mom actually got me into cosplay! She found flyer for an anime convention in 2005 at a comic store and thought I'd be interested! We noticed that there was a costume contest so my mom made my first 3 costumes for me! I didn't end up entering but I had a blast walking around as some of my favorite characters and meeting fans! My moms been very supportive and I'm super happy she was able to join me this weekend :) What's your favorite cosplay and why? My favorite cosplay is Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones! I worked really hard on it! I'd never made something from scratch without a pattern before and her dress was DEFINITELY a challenge. It fits really well and I just feel completely amazing wearing it! Plus I get to walk around with a wine goblet and make unamused faces all day! Haha What are you looking forward to seeing/doing in London? Oh my god, everything. It's always be a dream of mine to visit and I just want to be a tourist! I want to see Big Ben, Pinewood Studios, Stonehenge maybe? And definitely want to try some local food and drinks! I'm really looking forward to meeting people and enjoying a fun weekend with everyone! What advice would you give to someone who has never cosplayed but is interested? JUST GO FOR IT!! There's no WRONG way to cosplay! It's all about expression and how YOU interpret a costume! You can buy it, make it, alter something you find at a thrift store, as long as you're happy with it and enjoy it!! If you're not sure how to start sewing or building props, YouTube has amazing tutorials! I learned a lot from my mom and from my friends who also cosplay. Ask questions, challenge yourself, HAVE FUN!
