Gabriella B. Fifth Grade Mrs. Branin’s Class Setting The time this story took place was in the early 1900s during World War II The Story took place in various places in Denmark such as Copenhagen Anne Marie Uncle Henrik Peter Number Stars Novel Papa Ellen Mama Kristi Annemarie is a courageous girl. She is brave when she has to be. She risks her life to save her friend. Annemarie is also very caring. She cares about her family and friends. Main Events 1. In the beginning of the story Annemarie Johansen and Ellen Rosen were racing to their house after school. A Nazi soldier ordered them to halt because he wanted to know why they were running . When Annemarie's sister Kristi, told their parents they got nervous. 2. In late September Annemarie and Kristi had to go get a new button for Kristi's coat because it fell out. Once they got there on the door was a padlock and a sign with German words written on it. • • • One day Ellen's mom told Mrs. Johansen that the Jews of Denmark were being relocated. They didn’t know what it meant but to be safe Peter Neilson who was going to marry Annemarie's sister lise but she died when she got hit with a car. Took Ellen's parents to a safe place while Ellen stayed with Annemarie and her family. That night The Nazis came looking for the Rosen's but when they weren't there they checked in Annemarie's apartment . The Johansen’s told the Nazis that Ellen was Lise there daughter. They figured out that Ellen wasn’t safe there so they took her to Uncle Henrik’s house. Finally Ellen got to see her parents and Uncle Henrik took her family and other Jewish people to Sweden. They forgot the handkerchief that would temporarily make the Nazis dog lose their sense of smell so they couldn’t smell the people hiding. Since they forgot it Annemarie had to go on a dangerous mission to bring it to them. She was fortunately successful In the end Ellen and other Jews were sent to Sweden until the war was over. Annemarie said she would wear Ellen's necklace until she came back. Sadly Peter got caught and was executed. Annemarie found out that all along Ellen was part of the Resistance. She died when the Nazis found their secret warehouse and tried to capture the resistance fighters. Lise almost got out but when she was running away they ran her over. When Mrs. Johansen finally came back from taking the Jews to safety Annemarie noticed the handkerchief that was very important for the trip. She had to run all the way to the boat to give it to them. At the time she had no idea why they needed it so much. When she was halfway there the Nazis stopped her. She had to be brave and act like Kirsti. The War was very harsh on the characters in the story. Lise died because of it, and the Jews were always on the lookout for Nazis. I think the war also taught the characters something though, to be brave when they had to be. I really enjoyed the part where Annemarie had to go on a mission to give the handkerchief to uncle Henrik. She had to be like Kristi and she had to brave.
