Jewish people got warned on their New year that they would be taken
and relocated by the Germans.
They fled to Danes to be safe and the Danes helped them to get to
freedom in Sweden.
Swedish scientists made a powerful powder made out of dried rabbit
blood and cocaine. If smelled by dogs it would destroy their sense of
smell.
The war went on for 5 years!
More than 7 thousand Jews were sent to Sweden for safety.
Cause and effect
Cause
Effect
The German soldiers looked for
Jewish in Annemarie’s
apartment.
Ellen had to pretend to be
Annemarie’s sister because she
was Jewish.
The German soldiers were taking
Jews away.
Annemarie’s Mom had to take her
family (except dad) and Ellen
to Uncle Henrik’s house.
The soldiers came to Uncle
Henrik’s boat.
Luckily, they had a handkerchief
that took the dogs’ smell away
so the dogs couldn’t smell the
Jews.
Lexi’s Emotional Response
 I was scared when the soldiers stopped Ellen and
Annemarie when they where running.
 It was funny when Annemarie sister Kirsti was back
talking the soldiers.
 I got sad when Ellen had to act like Annemarie’s sister.
 I was sad again when the soldiers stop Annemarie on the
way to Uncle Henrilk in his boat and was eating her
bread.
 Then the book makes me feel sad for all the Jews that got
taken away and are dead.
Miranda’s emotional response
 The book made me think like I’m in it. Like I’m Annemarie or Ellen
– When the soldiers stopped Annemarie, her sister Kirsti, and Ellen
and when the soldiers came to Annemarie’s apartment to
“investigate” for Jews, it made me anxious if Ellen was going to
be okay or not go to a camp. It’s like a life or death situations.
Well, it is. You have to choose carefully.
– This book made me learn about the consequences in life if you
don’t follow the “ruler”. It doesn’t matter what your religion is.
This is like the slaves situations. The people are treated poorly
because they are “different”. Annemarie had to be brave when
she helped save her friend. And when she did or tried, it made
me nervous if she would succeed! But I felt relieved that she did!
This book also taught me to accept what I have and not complain
if I don’t like it! I also learned that wars are real stuff, and not
games!!
