BCIS 1305: BUSINESS COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
Syllabus
I.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course gives students an understanding of computer terminology, hardware,
software, operating systems, and information systems relating to the business
environment. The main focus of this course is on business applications of software
including word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation graphics and businessoriented utilization of the Internet. Keyboarding proficiency is recommended.
Prerequisite: Must be eligible to enroll in READ 0308 and MATH 0306.

COURSE RATIONALE
This course fulfills the Kilgore College computer competency requirement.
III.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Textbooks: New Perspectives on Microsoft Office 2013, First Course, 1st Edition, by
Shaffer/Carey/Parsons/Oja, 2014, CENGAGE Learning.
Supplies: Flash drive, SAM 2013 access code (bundled with textbook if purchased in
KC Bookstore)
Software used: Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2013 – including Word,
Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. (Software is available in the campus labs for student
use.)

EVALUATION
Average of Assignments ................................................................................ 50%
Assignments will consist of SAM 2013 trainings, exams, and projects from the
sam.cengage.com website. No late assignment submissions will be accepted.
Sum of Daily Quizzes (20) ............................................................................. 10%
Daily quizzes will be administered during the first five minutes of most class
periods through the ekilgore.com website, and will cover the material scheduled
for that class period. Each daily quiz will consist of five questions worth 1 point
each. No make-up quizzes will be given.
Midterm Exam (comprehensive) .................................................................... 20%
The Midterm Exam will consist of SAM 2013 tasks and objective questions
administered through the sam.cengage.com website. It must be taken in a
proctored environment. A Midterm Exam missed due to an excused absence
may be made up during the Final Exam period with proper documentation of the
reason for the absence.
Final Exam (comprehensive) .......................................................................... 20%
The Final Exam will consist of SAM 2013 tasks and objective questions administered
through the sam.cengage.com website. It must be taken in a proctored
environment.
VI.
CLASSROOM POLICIES
Regular, punctual attendance is expected of all students. Students are allowed to miss
the equivalent of two weeks of classes in a long semester for any reason with no
penalty. Students will be responsible for all material covered in their absence.
Students who stop attending class without withdrawing will receive an F in the
course. Students should read the academic dishonesty section of the Kilgore College
Student Handbook to be aware of potential penalties associated with dishonesty.
Dishonesty in any form will seriously damage a student’s standing. Students are
expected to be civil to each other and to the instructor at all times. If a student is not
civil, the instructor will ask the student to leave the classroom. Food and drink
consumption are prohibited in the classroom. Cell phone usage in the classroom is
prohibited during lectures, quizzes, and exams.
