UNDERSTANDING YOUR MATH COURSE PLACEMENTS
Congratulations on having completed your math assessment. To access your test results:
1) Log onto your Pipeline account
2) Under the STUDENT tab, click on STUDENT RECORDS
3) Click on VIEW COURSE PLACEMENT AND ELIGIBILITY
Math placements often include eligibility for multiple courses. You may take any of the math
classes listed in your pipeline account. If you have any questions please see an Academic
Counselor. It is critical that you receive individual advice regarding which class is appropriate
for you based on your skills, your major, and your educational goals.
UNDETERMINED STATUS: If your math course placement is listed as “Undetermined,” your test
score suggests that you may have taken a math test above your skill level. Before enrolling in a
math course at SBCC you must return and take a lower numbered math test or request retake
permission for the same level test (see below for information on the math retake petition
process).
Special note to students who plan to enroll in Math 117: Completion of Math 117 does not
lead to any other math courses. Students who plan to enroll in a higher level math course
must meet the prerequisite requirement, which is placement by exam or successful completion
of the appropriate SBCC prerequisite course. See the Math Flow Chart for details. Students
may also present proof of successful completion of an equivalent prerequisite course taken at
another college for possible course eligibility. For more information, visit
sbcc.edu/prerequisites.
MATH RETAKE PETITION PROCESS:
You may take each specific test once per testing period (October – January is the testing period
for Spring enrollment and February – August is the testing period for Summer/Fall enrollment).
You can take a different test (either higher or lower) at any time. If you would like to request
permission to RETAKE the same level test within the same testing period, please follow the
steps below:
1) Contact Assessment Staff either in person (Room SS-251) or via phone (805) 730-4149 for
written permission to retake your test. Permission is dependent on the score from your
initial test.
2) If your retake request is approved, you may reassess any time after two weeks from your
original test date. Bring your written retake permission letter with you to retake your test.
3) Use the diagnostic information from your original test to review for a higher placement. For
math study packets and other test preparation materials, go to sbcc.edu/assessment and
click on “Sample Test Questions.”
