(147) assessments were completed by eleven (11) sections of SPAN 111.The average was 7.7 correct out of 10. The following indicates the number of times out of 147 an incorrect answer was chosen for items 1-10: 33 1. ser/estar, 15 2. present tense: subject/verb agreement, 14 3. present tense: subject/verb agreement and stem-changing verbs, 58 4. direct object pronoun, 14 5. verb gustar, 50 6.noun/adjective agreement, 35 7. ser/estar and tener, 47 8. ser/estar/tener and hay, In the academic year 20062007, the assessment of SPAN 111 indicated that only noun/adjective agreement (60% accuracy) fell below a 70% accuracy level. In the present assessment of 2012, the following core indicators fell below a 70% accuracy level: 4) direct object pronoun (60% accuracy), 6) noun/adjective agreement (59% accuracy), 8) ser/estar/ tener and hay (68% accuracy) and 9) present tense: present progressive (59% accuracy). The outcomes will not be revised at this time. In spring 2012, we decided to assess the following core indicators: 1) ser/estar, 2) present tense: subject/verb agreement, 3) present tense: subject/verb agreement and stem-changing verbs, 4) direct object pronoun, 5) verb gustar 6) noun/adjective agreement 7) ser/estar and tener, 8) ser/estar/tener and hay, Page 1 We started having meetings of Spanish instructors in fall 2010. Once we finished one cycle of assessment of the 4semester Spanish program, we shared the results of assessment and reinforced teaching methods with fulltime and part-time faculty to maintain consistent curriculum at these meetings during professional development. We will continue to share results of assessment in the next meetings we hold twice a year to reinforce direct object pronoun; noun/adjective agreement; ser/estar/tener and hay; and present progressive. Outcome # 2 Students will be able to identify personal values and cultural mores different than their own in custom and usage. Assessment Results 60 9. present tense: present progressive, and 8 10. reading comprehension. A cultural-comparative approach will be drawn throughout the course. Students will be able to demonstrate global and cultural awareness by earning a 70% or above through structured activities such as research projects, presentations, examinations, and discussions, etc. Page 2 Use of Results Effect on Course Perhaps too much emphasis was made to assessment at these meetings and precipitated less than favorable results.
