About the Divisa Ensemble
The Divisa Ensemble is recognized for its engaging performances and eclectic
programming. The ensemble’s unconventional instrumentation (flute, oboe, violin,
viola, and cello) and “mix-and-match” approach allow for a wide variety of repertoire
comprising all traditional and contemporary styles.
Since its premier concert in 2009, the Divisa Ensemble has performed throughout
the San Francisco Bay Area, including appearances in the Del Valle Fine Arts Series,
St. Bede’s Performing Arts Series, Manteca Kindred Arts Series, Old First Concerts,
and Trinity Chamber Concerts. They have appeared as featured artists of the Vallejo
Symphony and the San Francisco Chapter of the National Association of Composers.
On every program the Divisa Ensemble showcases its diverse repertoire of the
Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary genres.
The Divisa Ensemble is currently the Ensemble-in-Residence of the acclaimed El
Camino Youth Symphony. The ensemble mentors student chamber groups through
masterclasses and weekly coachings. Each year the Divisa Honors Program selects
exemplary student groups to perform in a Divisa Ensemble concert.
Current members of the Divisa Ensemble are Tomiko Tsai (flute), Meave Cox (oboe),
Eugenia Wie (violin), Stephanie Ng (viola), and Sara Styles (cello). Members trained
individually at the Rice Unversity, Peabody Conservatory, Mannes College of Music,
Boston University, San Francisco Conservatory, University of Puget Sound, San
Francisco State University, University of California at Berkeley, and the University of
Southern California. The Divisa Ensemble’s members perform with many orchestras
throughout the Bay Area including Symphony Silicon Valley, the San Francisco
Chamber Orchestra, and the Oakland, Vallejo, Marin, Monterey, and Santa Rosa
Symphonies.
The name “Divisa Ensemble” is derived from the Italian and French terms divisi
(divided) and ensemble (together). Programs feature pieces with varied instrumental
combinations ranging from duos to quintets with all five members performing as one
complete ensemble.
Accolades
“Divisa Ensemble offers extraordinary
listens into the color, precision, and
deep musicality that marks the music
of this all female ensemble.”
– Jean Bartlett, San Jose Mercury News (2013)
“The Divisa Ensemble is a totally
professional group. They play
wonderfully in tune and are a very
tight ensemble in that they phrase
together and feel the flow of the
music as a total unit. They are also
very pleasant people and very easy
to work with. It was a great pleasure
to work with them and have them
perform my music.”
– Nancy Bloomer Deussen, Composer (2012)
“You gave a lovely concert - thank
you so much. I really enjoyed the
imagination of the program, the joy
with which you played together, and
the high level of your playing.”
– Jane McDougle, Music Director of St. Bede’s Performing Arts Series (2013)
