FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 16, 2015 Concerto Competition winner Calvin Jin is featured soloist in Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Ensembles concert March 6 at Weill Hall Indie-folk rock quartet Trebuchet is special guest (SANTA ROSA, CA) – Fifteen-year old violinist Calvin Jin will be the featured soloist in the SRS Youth Orchestra and Young People’s Chamber Orchestra joint concert on Friday, March 6 at 7 p.m. in Weill Hall. Jin bested five other competitors to win the 2015 Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, performing the first movement of Kabalevsky’s Violin Concerto in C major. He appeared before a panel consisting of members of the Santa Rosa Symphony orchestra and music faculty from Sonoma State and SRJC. Jin is a junior at St. Vincent de Paul High School in Petaluma. In 2011 and 2013, he was the leader of the pit orchestra for the Cinnabar Theater Young Rep shows. He is also a member of the Rafael Ensemble, a student musician group based in San Rafael which performs at nursing homes, fundraisers and private parties. He joined the SRS Youth Orchestra in Fall 2014 and is currently the ensemble’s concertmaster. (See complete bio later in this release) On the program for the SRS Youth Orchestra (YO), conducted by Dr. Richard Loheyde, will be movements I and IV of Borodin’s Second Symphony; “Nimrod” from Elgar’s The Enigma Variations; Mussorgsky’s A Night on Bald Mountain; Wagner’s Overture to Die Meistersinger, Kabelevsky’s Violin Concerto in C major, featuring Calvin Jin, and the first movement of Beethoven’s Symphony Number 5. The Young People’s Chamber Orchestra (YPCO), directed by Aaron Westman, will welcome as their guests for this concert, the Petaluma Indie-folk rock quartet Trebuchet (pictured, left). The quartet’s members—Navid Manoochehri, Lauren Haile, Eliott Whitehurst and Paul Haile—met while attaining their music degrees from Sonoma State University. The group originated in 2010 and released their first full length CD, Carry On, in early 2014. Trebuchet has collaborated with YPCO on a new composition to be premiered at this concert. YPCO will also perform the following pieces: Vivaldi’s Le Quattro Stagione, “L’Inverno” [The Four Seasons, “Winter”] with Adam Dvorak as violin soloist; the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence; and Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 7 in F-Sharp minor. This concert promises to be a unique and wonderful collaboration among some of the finest young musicians in our area. Tickets may be purchased at the door SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY. Concerto Competition Winner Biography Calvin Jin, age 15, is a junior at St. Vincent de Paul High School. He has studied violin under Ms. Yoko Acheson since 2005 and completed the Suzuki method (book 10). In 2011 and 2013, Jin was the leader of the pit orchestra for the Cinnabar Theater Young Rep shows in his hometown of Petaluma. He is also a member of the Rafael Ensemble, a student musician group based in San Rafael that performs at nursing homes, fundraisers and private parties. When he was in the 5th grade, Jin joined a Napa Valley Youth Symphony (NVYS) preparatory string orchestra. After serving 2 years as concertmaster, he moved up to the youth symphony as principal second violin and played in their chamber group as well. From 2012 to 2014, he served as a co-concertmaster of NVYS. Some highlights during his years at NVYS include winning their concerto competitions in 2012 and 2014, and leading the group as concertmaster in June, 2014, at Carnegie Hall during the orchestra’s tour in New York. In the fall of 2014, Calvin Jin joined the Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Orchestra and is honored to serve as concertmaster. He loved playing at Weill Hall with the professional symphony during the side-by-side concert in October and looks forward to performing with his peers.
