2nd Place – Silver Medal Marimbist, WeiChen Lin served as principal percussionist at the Ministry of National Defense Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan from 2004-06. From 2010-2011, he served as the principal timpanist of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. Lin has won top prizes in several worldwide competitions including: third prize at the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition (2012), second place at the Southern California Marimba Competition (2011), first prize of the PAS International Percussion Competition in Fermo, Italy (2007), second prize of the PASIC Marimba Solo Competition (2007) and winner of the Boston University Concerto Competition (2007). In 2003, he was invited to play a duo recital with marimbist Takayoshi Yoshioka in Japan. He was a member of the Taipei Percussion Ensemble from 2002-2006 and has performed over 200 concerts around Asia. Lin made his U.S. concerto debut in 2007, performing Prism Rhapsody by Keiko Abe with the Boston University Symphony Orchestra. He also has performed recitals at Boston College, University of North Carolina, Conservatory of Music “G.B. Pergolesi” (Italy), Japan, and Taiwan. In 2008, he won a fellowship at Tanglewood Music Center. Born in 1982 in Tainan City, Taiwan, he began to study piano at age 5 and percussion at age 12. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2004 and was invited to study through its graduate program. He earned his master’s degree from Boston University in 2008 with the Boston University Honors Award and is continuing his studies there as part of its DMA program.
