POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN
EDUCATION (PGCE)
The PGCE is an intensive university-based course preparing graduates for the demands of teaching.
The PGCE pathways at Canterbury Christ Church University have an almost unparalleled national
and international reputation for their quality, their range and degree of innovation. Developed and
refined in partnership with our partner schools and colleges, they are built on a strong sense of
shared values: transforming individuals and society; reflective and critical approach to learning; and
inclusive set of principles on which education must be based.
The quality of provision is built on mature and embedded partnership working with a wide range
of primary and secondary schools in Kent, Medway, South London, Essex and East Sussex, and with
nurseries and further education colleges in the region and in other parts of England and Europe.
We aim to educate students for the future and we are seeking to build their capabilities for an
uncertain world, in order to have the best possible impact on the life chances and achievements of
the children and young people they educate.

DELIVERY
Unless specified, all full-time programmes are based at our Canterbury campus starting in September
for a full academic year. All learning on the programme is designed to complement professional
practice and the academic study is informed by and from practice.
ALL PGCE PATHWAYS COVER THE FOLLOWING MAIN AREAS:
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
You will spend a minimum of 120 days in school during your PGCE, based in two or more
contrasting schools or educational settings, and working under the expert guidance of school-based
partnership tutors and mentors. This will support you to develop a wide range of teaching skills and
the understanding and knowledge to enable you to meet and go beyond the requirements of The
Teachers’ Standards.
PROFESSIONAL STUDIES
You will learn about broader aspects of education, its role in society and communities and how
education policy and practice has an impact on schools and educational settings. Key principles
and values in education will be explored as you develop your own theories of education and reflect
critically on others.
CURRICULUM STUDIES
You will develop your understanding and knowledge of the relevant curriculum, pedagogy and
resources to support the teaching of your chosen subject or age phase. As you progress through
your studies and can apply your learning to practical teaching situations, you will be introduced to a
wider range of critical perspectives on teaching and learning in your chosen subject(s).
ENHANCED STUDIES
You will have the opportunity to choose a particular aspect of education and to study that in
greater depth. This could include aspects of particular curriculum areas, aspects of learning which
cross curriculum boundaries; the option you take could include an opportunity to undertake work
experience in non-school settings, some of which could be outside the UK.
Our extensive portfolio of PGCE options are detailed in this brochure.
Please note: our offering is subject to Government teaching recruitment policies and an annual
review of our provision

PGCE PRIMARY FULL-TIME ROUTE
Primary | Upper Primary plus Languages: French | German | Spanish
Upper Primary with Mathematics specialism – see below
The PGCE Primary aims to enable you to become a confident, competent classroom practitioner who
can enable children to learn effectively across the whole curriculum. The course also develops your
understanding of the demands of the National Curriculum, the Curriculum for the Foundation Stage
and other Government initiatives. You can opt to apply for the Upper Primary plus Languages course.
By doing so, you will follow the same Primary pathway but may have some additional opportunities
to engage with language learning and teaching, including a self-funded research opportunity in a
French, Spanish or German Primary school setting.
The Primary route works very closely with our partnership schools to provide a range of experiences.
In our model for PGCE placement, you are allocated to a partnership school for the full PGCE year
and you may be allocated to one or two classes. This one longer placement is structured into
individual days and two block placements in the Autumn and Summer terms. In addition you are
required to undertake a contrasting school experience for a minimum of 15 days. This should take
place in a different school setting and should provide a contrasting experience to your base school,
including: size; urban or rural locations; infant or juniors; use of specific curriculum.
www.canterbury.ac.uk/pg/pgce-primary
PGCE PRIMARY WITH MATHEMATICS SPECIALISM
Upper Primary with Mathematics specialism
You can also apply to follow the Upper Primary course with mathematics specialism. This course
is designed to support you in reaching the Standards to be a Qualified Teacher, with a focus on
primary mathematics. It is written for anyone who enjoys learning mathematics and wants to teach
children to fully understand and be fascinated by it. The course will enable you to be a generalist
primary class teacher but will also prepare you to be a specialist teacher of primary mathematics,
who leads mathematics across the school. You will study primary mathematics in depth, exploring
the most effective ways of teaching mathematical ideas. You will also gain a strong understanding
and experience of teaching other subjects.

Art and Design | English | Geography | History Mathematics | Modern Foreign Languages
Physical Education | Religious Education | Science | Music
Please note that due government changes to how places are allocated, some courses may already
be closed. Please check our website for the course(s) you are interested in.
The PGCE 7-14 pathway is an innovative and unique pathway that enables you to be educated
across two distinct sectors; primary and secondary. Through this experience and education, you will
gain a broad knowledge and understanding of education from Early Years through to A level.
Although you will teach predominantly in Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 (7-14 years), you will engage
with observation across the age ranges and are encouraged to engage in some teaching at Key
Stage 4. The underpinning rationale of the pathway is to engage with issues that occur from the
year 6-7 transfer, from primary to secondary school, and develop through experiencing best practice
in both settings.
The pathway works with a specific group of primary, secondary and special schools in order to bring
a dedicated partnership approach to all aspects of the pathway from planning to joint teaching
and learning experiences. Whilst in secondary settings you will have a specialist subject you will
be expected to teach across the National Curriculum in primary. The pathway offers a wide range
of experiences such as a devoted week to SEN (Special Educational Needs) with 3 days in a special
school.
From this pathway you can gain employment across primary and secondary settings, including
international and independent schools, and are highly sought after with several students gaining
interesting roles working across both a primary and secondary school.

Physical Education | Religious Education
Please note that due government changes to how places are allocated, some courses may already
be closed. Please check our website for the course(s) you are interested in.
The 11-18 age range offers a fantastic opportunity to work with creative, vibrant and dynamic
young people with a focus on teaching the subject you are passionate about. You will learn to
teach your subject across the 11-18 age range whilst understanding how it fits within the wider
curriculum.
You should experience two contrasting secondary school placements which may include:
Independent; Grammar; Foundation, Academy; and Secondary High Schools. On placement you will
be supported by a Professional Mentor, Curriculum Mentor and University Tutor.
You will develop a wide range of strategies to teach, support and develop learners from KS3 through
to GCSE and A Level. Each specialism maximises your potential to become an imaginative and
creative teacher who understands the wider importance of 11-18 education in society.

SCHOOL DIRECT
Primary | Secondary
School Direct | School Direct Salaried
QTS only | School Direct PGCE
You will need to check which subjects/age phases are open to applications and what options
are available at each school.
The School Direct programme is a school-led route delivered in some of the best primary and
secondary schools across England in partnership with an ITT provider. Canterbury Christ Church
University is one of the largest providers of School Direct in the country. We currently work with
around 40 lead schools who offer both School Direct and School Direct Salaried routes into
teaching. We are working in partnership with schools not only in the South East but across the
country.
On this programme you will spend the majority of the year on placement working alongside
experienced colleagues in schools. The programme aims to harness the knowledge and experience
of school colleagues in the delivery of programmes, working in partnership with the experience of
accredited ITT providers. The vast majority of the training is provided by the school and the school
mentors.
UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT ROUTES
There are two School Direct routes; School Direct (unsalaried) and School Direct (Salaried). It is
important that you are clear which of these programmes a school is offering as it will affect your
funding for the programme.
School Direct (unsalaried)
You can apply for Student Tuition Fee Loans and Maintenance Loans to help pay for course fees
and help towards the cost of living. You may also benefit from a Department for Education bursary
depending on the subject you study and your degree grade.
School Direct Salaried
On this route you would be an employee of the school and as such be paid a salary equivalent to the
unqualified teacher status (currently starting at £16,298). The fee for QTS only (currently £5,800) is
paid by your school, however the PGCE will incur additional fees and payment of these will need to
be discussed with your school.
You will not be eligible for bursaries or any CCCU funding. You may be able to apply for a loan to
cover the fee for the PGCE element.
UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT AWARDS
Canterbury Christ Church University is proud to offer a wide range of options within the School
Direct Training Programme. Not only do we offer both the School Direct and School Direct (salaried)
pathways but we currently provide two awards (QTS only and School Direct PGCE). All students
automatically work towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) but students have the opportunity, in
consultation with their school partner, to opt in to the PGCE pathway.
Faculty of
EDUCATION
19
QTS Pathway – all students
The majority of your time on this programme is spent in school. It is a requirement of all QTS
programmes that you get at least 60 days (or equivalent) training through the year. You will get at
least 12 days taught sessions from the University and a programme of professional development
provided by the school. Your development in school will be supported by a mentor who will help
you in your progress towards meeting the standards for QTS. You will be required to undertake a
period of placement in a second school that provides a contrast to your base school.
School Direct PGCE Pathway
The School Direct PGCE pathway is a mixture of work based learning and academic assessments.
All students on this pathway will study the aspects described above in the QTS pathway. In addition
Student Teachers who opt in to this pathway will be required to undertake additional academic
study and write academic assignments. There are additional taught days and tutorial support to
support students studying on this pathway.
FEES AND FUNDING

TEACH FIRST
Primary | Secondary
Teach First is a charitable organisation based in London, whose vision is to recruit, train and place
top graduates in ‘National Challenge’ primary and secondary schools for two years, to address
educational disadvantage through inspirational teaching and leadership. Selection for the Teach First
Leadership Development Programme is very competitive and includes a rigorous assessment process
aimed at identifying not only academic ability but the level of your commitment to teaching and to
the Teach First vision.
Typically, you are expected to begin the programme with at least a 2:1 degree in your teaching
subject and are required to complete a ‘Curriculum Knowledge Audit’, which is assessed by
University tutors. All prospective candidates apply on-line to Teach First directly.
DELIVERY
The programme starts with an intensive six-week ‘Summer Institute’, which focuses on the essentials
of teaching theory and practice, including pedagogy and personalised learning.
From September, you will work full-time in school, and follow an employment-based training route
which is provided by partner institutions across geographical regions in England and Wales.
Canterbury Christ Church University is one of two training providers for participants based in schools
within the London local area, and is the training provider for the South East and East of England
local areas.
Training is provided by school-based mentors, supported by University tutors who visit the schools
regularly and run specialist training days at various times in the year. On successful completion of the
first academic year, you will achieve QTS and a PGCE.
Once you gain your teaching qualification, you will continue your placement in the second year and
receive a structured programme of leadership training designed to prepare you for senior positions
in education, politics or business.
Masters level work is integrated into the training programme so after the two mandatory years of
the Teach First programme, you are well on the way to completing an MA in Education Leadership.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications for the Teach First Leadership Development Programme are made online directly to
Teach First. Recruitment begins very early and typically closes in March prior to the start of the next
academic year.
