Persuasive Speech Outline
Introduction:
-
-
Attention getter: You here the whistle blow, the buzzer sound, or the crack of the
bat. All big aspects of sports. But what is something that sometimes doesn’t get as
much attention as these? When an athlete goes down with some sort of injury.
Credibility statement: I have noticed that many of you in this class are athletes, and
as an athlete I want to stress how important it is to know how to react to injuries.
Thesis statement: I want you to join the athletic training club so you have a better
understanding of injuries.
Preview of main points: I will first be explaining why athletes aren’t as well
informed as they should be on injuries. Then I will explain how joining the athletic
training club can help you with this problem.
Body:
-
1) A problem many athletes face is not having a full time athletic trainer at their high
school to aid them with their injuries.
o There are not enough athletic trainers at the high school level to focus on one
school (Foreman, 2013). Many times one athletic trainer will have to cover
multiple schools and can only help during the major events. An athletic trainer
can make changes in practices that could lead to the prevention of a future
injury. “Improvement in health care delivery to interscholastic athletes could
include athletic site readiness or the presence of an athletic trainer (AT) at
both practice and competitive events” (DeWitt, 2012).
o When trainers aren’t present athletes aren’t informed on how to handle the
situation, in reference to how they should react about the injury. Instead taking
the athlete directly to the ER, a trainer can observe the athlete and determine
the severity of the injury.
o Athletic trainers can help athletes determine when to limit themselves, and can
communicate with coaches on when to limit players. Many times coaches and
players want to ignore the signs that tell them they need to stop and activity,
or simply are under informed on the topic.
Transition statement: Now that you how important an athletic trainer can be, I will explain how
joining the athletic training club can benefit you by making you your own athletic trainer.
-
2) Joining the athletic training club can benefit you personally as an athlete and those
who aren’t athletes.
o “…certified athletic trainers work with more than just athletes – they can be
found just about anywhere that people are physically active” (Athletic
Training, 2013). You don’t have to be an athlete to be a part of this club.
Becoming a member will help you understand injuries and how to assess them
in and out of sports. During the meetings you will talk about incidents trainers
and non-trainers have experienced with different injuries and conditions.
o Sometimes speakers will be present at the meetings speaking over topics that
could relate to you; such as concussions, sprains, or strains. This would better
your understanding about what should be done to prevent these injuries and
treatment of them.
Conclusion:
-
Review statement: In conclusion it is important to understand that people need to be
informed about injuries they are susceptible to and how they should react to them.
Restate thesis: I want you to join the athletic training club so you have a better
understanding of injuries.
Decisive closing: It is important that a person understands their body and can
properly take care of themselves. Having the needed knowledge about their bodies
can help a person live a longer and happier life.
