Wednesday, VJ Scott Beibin and Kalamazoo Collective Housing will bring the Lost Film Festival to the Little Theatre. Now in its ninth year, the Lost Film Festival was founded by Scott Beibin. Beibin said it was originally conceived as a regular film festival but eventually evolved into the mixture of performance art, short films and social commentary. “It’s a showcase for new digital media,” Beibin said. “But we’re also very socially and environmentally conscious.” Beibin also co-founded the Evil Twin Booking Agency with Liz Cole. In the 1990s, he created punk rock record label Bloodlink Records, which he credits with starting his infatuation with outsider art, such as many of the films in the festival and awakening his interest in the world around him. “I gained a strong sense of justice and equality,” he said. Beibin went on to explain that his own role in the festival is as the curator of the huge library of short films that can be shown, performance artist and the video version of a DJ. On the Lost Film Festival Web site, Beibin acknowledged that he has a collection of over 800 videos that he can choose from for each night’s show. Beibin made sure to point out that the spreading of social consciousness can be fun. “I try to show people an alternate set of viewpoints,” he said. “It also gives a really good feel for what’s going on in the indie film world.” Having already done around 80 shows this year, Beibin can confidently predict a good turnout for the festival. “This has been a really, really amazing year,” he said. “Americans are waking up and are energized because of the election.” 1 of 2 10/22/08 8:20 AM Western Herald » Blog Archive » Little Theatre hosts ninth annu... http://www.westernherald.com/?p=1538 The festival first came to Kalamazoo last year, said Michael Gregor, event coordinator for Kalamazoo Collective Housing, the organization that sponsored the event last year and this year. Gregor mentioned that the festival allows audiences to see a lot of material that isn’t available through mainstream means and that it is an opportunity for them to see films on many different, important issues. “There’s a lot of political, social and activist relevance,” Gregor said. “People should be expecting a wide variety of films and opinions and ways of telling stories or documenting events.” When asked what the connection between Kalamazoo Collective Housing and the Lost Film Festival was, Gregor explained that aside from providing non-profit collective housing in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Collective Housing also strives to help people in other ways. “We’re also about the public education about social justice and sustainability,” he said. The show will begin at the Little Theatre at 7 p.m. and will run until 10 p.m. tonight. There is no fee or cover, though donations are encouraged.
