About the Artist — Karen Bystedt The Iris Gallery of Fine Art info@irisgallery.net 617.895.8951|970.429.1010|413.429.6878 Karen Bystedt caught the attention of the contemporary art world with the USA introduction of “The Lost Warhols”, at Photo LA, 2013. The body of work was quickly selected to headline the Month of Photography in Los Angles Show, at The Robert Berman Gallery in Bergmont Station. In an April, Fabrik Magazine cover story, Berman characterized Bystedt’s Andy Warhol show as, “an austere and powerful look at one of the most celebrated artists of the Twentieth century.” After studying photography and literature at the American College in Paris, the young artist returned to the United States and earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Film, at New York University, in 1982. It was while she was a student in New York, that she photographed Warhol at The Factory. Bystedt moved firmly into photographing celebrity movie stars, when they were young and unknown. She has written the narratives and interviews that accompany the four books of glamour shots she has published; “Not Just Another Pretty Face” (1983), “The New Breed” (1988), “Before They Were Famous” (1992) and, “They Dared To Dream” (2009). Karen Bystedt’s artistic strength is her ability to establish an intimate trust with the subjects, as she engages them on-camera and then makes them look beautiful – a skill well honed on Warhol – and one the photographer used throughout her career. Her strong images of iconic men brands them as markers of their times. Collaborations with other artists include Peter Tunney, Speedy Graphito, Tonia Calderon. Her work is in the permanent collections of The Andy Warhol Museum, The Hearst Foundation, Prince Albert of Monaco, and Tomasso Buti, among others. The artist currently resides in West Hollywood, California About the Artist — Speedy Graphito from Wikipedia Olivier Rizzo, aka Speedy Graphito, is a French painter who was born in Paris in 1961. He is one of the pioneers of the French Street Art movement alongside others like Jérôme Mesnager, Miss Tic and Blek le Rat. By imposing a powerful, innovative style in the early 1980s, Speedy influenced a generation of urban artists. Though his work has evolved considerably over the past few decades, he has become known and revered for his exploration of commercialism and references to pop culture images and icons. The Iris Gallery of Fine Art info@irisgallery.net 617.895.8951|970.429.1010|413.429.6878 After a very brief career as a graphic designer and art director, in 1983 Speedy joined the collective X-Moulinex, but left the following year. By 1989 Speedy Graphito had participated in a number of group art exhibitions mostly in Paris, and by the late 1990s Speedy Graphito’s unique street art style was exhibited in art galleries across Europe. His graffiti, executed with stencils or with a brush, incorporates schematic and dynamic characters approaching those of the Catalan designer Javier Mariscal or American artist Keith Haring. Other influences include America of the Fifties, cartoons and Manga and images in Maya culture. Particularly influenced by the iconography of Disney characters and video games, Speedy Graphito often turns a critical eye on our society, as his works feed off the collective memory of iconic imagery to create a new universal language. As an example, Speedy Graphito’s “Temptation 2011” features Disney’s Snow White enamored with the half-eaten logo of Macintosh Apple, creating a shrewd and satirical message about consumer seduction. Speedy Graphito’s paintings, prints, and street art murals can be found worldwide. Already recognized in the international arena, Speedy Graphito’s Art is well known in France, England, USA, Belgium, India, Japan, Brazil, and Dubai, as well as major auction houses. Speedy Graphito has recently participated in a number of solo art exhibitions in Los Angeles Art Galleries, as well as exhibiting at the 2011 Miami Art Basel. Speedy Graphito lives and works in Paris.
