CHAPLAINCY NEWS
Ms. C. Gomes & Ms. C. Anniballi, Chaplaincy Team
As we end a very busy semester, and look forward to the start of a new year, the
members of the Chaplaincy Team pray that the joy of the Christmas season will be
yours throughout this new year. We remember the many blessings of the past
year and look forward to many exciting events to come.
During the month of November, a Remembrance Day Prayer Service was
held in honour of the contributions made by Canadian troops in peacekeeping
missions all over the world. Leading into the Advent season, McGivney began its
preparation for the season of Advent by celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We would like to thank several pastors who gave so generously of
their time to help our staff and students prepare their hearts for the birth of
Christ. Our heartfelt thanks go to Fr. Patrick Gnanapragasam from Prince of Peace
Parish, Fr. Richard Andrews from St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Fr. Luc Amoussou
from Regis College and Fr. Elias Chachati from St. Maria Goretti Parish in Scarborough.
November was also the month of retreats for both Grade 10 students and Grade 12 students. Grade 10 students attended a social justicethemed retreat held as St. Bonaventure’s Parish Centre that was led by SLAM leaders and facilitated by Ms. Gomes. Throughout the retreat,
students were focussed on activities and themes dealing with social justice issues, both local and global, and their roles and responsibilities
as community members to continue to foster justice in our world. This theme of justice continued with the Gr. 12 retreat that was facilitated on-site by the Christian Peacemakers Team, led by Fr. Bob Holmes. Fr. Bob, recently arrived back from his work in the occupied territories of Palestine, worked along with his team with our Gr. 12 students, to promote the understanding of inequity and injustice that is rampant in various aspects of societies in our world. Students worked through role playing, presentation and discussion. The day concluded
with a celebration of the Eucharist by Fr. Bob.
We celebrated our Advent Liturgy on Thursday December 5th, 2013 with our celebrant, Fr. Luc Amoussou. We have been blessed with
the presence of Fr. Luc for the past 7 years as he has been working on his doctorate at Regis College. Fr. Luc not only is able to join us for
our full school masses, but also celebrates with 2 classes weekly during our Class Masses each Friday morning.
Advent was the signal that our annual Share Christmas Campaign was close at hand. Staff and students at McGivney helped to support
2 charities that are close to our school community --- AYNI and the Holiday Heroes campaign. AYNI is a charity that FMM has been supporting for the past 7 years and was started by a fellow teacher, Margie Orsi, at St. Brother Andre. This charity sponsors elementary students in
Alto de los Mores, Peru. This year our generous homerooms collected $2000.00 for the Ayni projects. Also, many homerooms supported
the clothing and toy drive for the Holiday Heroes campaign that is an annual effort by the YCDSB in coordination with the York Regional
Police. The dollar value from our toys and clothes, including the generous contributions made by Ms. Mastropaolo and her Cosmetology students, was in the $2600.00 range. In total, the FMM community raised over $5600.00 during this campaign!
The Peer Mentorship team at McGivney was hard at work this year working closely with our senior leaders and Grade 9 students to
foster school spirit and to help our Grade 9 students to deal with the new challenges they are faced with in their high school careers. In
order to prepare for their first set of final exams, the Grade 9s were mentored by the senior leaders during the January session of Peer
Mentorship in exam preparation and study skills. This is a valuable way for senior mentors to share student-based experiences of writing
exams in high school as well as to inform the Gr. 9’s of important study skills and preparation tools that were shared in a handout for all
students.
As we continue on our journey through this new year, we pray that the love of Christ may fill your hearts and bring many blessings to your
family. We hope to continue to serve the McGivney community by the example set by the Holy Family as we journey forward towards the
Lenten season and the new life given through the Risen Jesus.

GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT
Now that students have registered and submitted their course selections through career cruising (on-line course selection program) for
September 2014, counselors are presently scrutinizing their course
selections. To this end, students are being called down by the counselors and are making informed and appropriate choices. Students
are encouraged to make appointments to see their counselors to
examine their post secondary options (College, University, Apprenticeships, and Work Place). Educational, Ministry and scholarship
web sites were shared with the students during course selection
presentations in the classrooms and the lecture hall. Students were
scheduled by homeroom to complete their on-line course selection
in the computer labs. Counselors were on hand to help the students
with the course selection process both during the day and after
school in the computer lab. Students will receive their Verification
Sheets in April during which time they will have an opportunity to
make any changes to their course selections for September.
On February 13th , 2014 the Guidance Department arranged an Information Evening for grades 9, 10 and 11 parents and students. An
information session was held in the Cafeteria on Post-Secondary
Education, (College and University), for Grades 9, 10 and 11 parents
and students to discuss concerns re: Post-Secondary Education and
Course Selection. Representatives from the University of Toronto
and Seneca College gave presentations on Post-Secondary Pathways
(programs, prerequisites, tuition, residence, scholarships, financial aid
etc…). Ms. Castriota, Dean of Guidance gave a presentation on diploma requirements, destination courses and program pathways re:
post secondary and important dates. The evening ended with an answer and question period. An Information session was also held the
same evening for the parents of students in the IB Program. The

presentation was held in the Library to discuss the IB Program and
Course Selection. The IB parents and students were also invited to
join the presentation in the cafeteria once the IB presentation was
over. Parents and students found the evening very informative.
Our College and University bound students are presently receiving
replies from the post secondary institutions to which they have applied. Counsellors are assisting them with verifications, changes to
and clarification of their program selection. On Tuesday April 22nd
there will be an OSAP Presentation in the Lecture Hall at 2:30 pm to
inform the grade 12 students of the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) and to guide them through the process. The Financial
Aid rep from George Brown College is kind enough to speak to our
students in regards to financial aid for post secondary. Concerned
Parents are welcome to attend.
Guidance is presently compiling a tentative list of potential graduates
for June 2014. To this end, credit counseling summaries are being
scrutinized to ensure that students have the correct number of credits, compulsories, community hours and successful completion of the
literacy test. Graduation pictures were scheduled February 20th to
March 6th. Proofs were distributed on March 19th. Graduation retakes
took place on March27th. The Graduation Ceremony will be on Friday June 27 th, 2014 during the day. This is due to the ongoing construction at FMM, with the result being we had to move graduation
to a nearby Banquet Hall. More information to follow. Kindly direct
all questions regarding graduation to Ms. Castriota or Mr. Naidoo.

Mr. A. Ambida, Dean of Co-op
The FMM Library Resource Centre is undergoing a minor facelift ! The original 1992 pink and peachy coloured countertop and front panels
have been removed by Mr. Brian Ricard’s grade 11 Tech. students. Many thanks for the hard work the students put into this project. The
students were very enthusiastic and excited about being part of renewal project. After removing the old vinyl surfaces, the area was carefully
measured for a new wooden countertop, trim and front vertical panels. Because of the complexity of this project, it was necessary for the
remainder of the work be completed solely by Mr. Ricard. The countertop and sides are now a beautiful maple colour with five coats of varnish to complete the project. Thank you Mr.Ricard for the many hours spent on this project. Thank you also to the Catholic School Council
for paying for the wood for this truly beautiful project. The final step in this renewal project is a mural which will be painted on the front
panels under Ms. Brockest’s leadership with the Mural Committee. The mural paintings will reflect ALL aspects of student life at FMM.
FMM Library Resource Centre
Co-operative Education
The FMM Library continues to be the ‘hub’ for many students and teachers, not only for research, reading, class visits and study, but also for
FMM community activities and events: the Library Seminar room was used for Grad Photographs; the study carrels were used for the French
International Baccalaureate exams; the ESP club invited York Regional Police Officer Patty, who is our community officer, to speak about
Healthy Relationships; the Grade 12 IB Science students in Mr. Young and Mr. Alphonso’s classes set up sophisticated, informative and interactive Science centres throughout the library space; the Chaplaincy team used the library for Reconciliation prior to the beginning of Lent; and
students writing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test used the library to complete their tests.
Students are reminded of the many Data Bases available to assist with research for essays, CPT’s , etc. By navigating to the FMM Home page,
students can click on ‘Library’ and ‘Library Home’ , students can access 4 data bases at the bottom of the Library page, as well as clicking on
the ‘filing cabinet YCDSB’ and username “ second” and password “ ycdsb” . You may access all Data Bases from home computers also.
Thank you to the many student volunteers who help in the Library. Mrs. Johnston and I appreciate you giving up your free time before and
after school, as well as lunch time to help with the many tasks in the library.
Students are reminded to continue to suggest new resources – fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, etc. to be considered for purchase. Your
suggestions ensure that the Library collection remains fresh and current and that the academic needs of our school community are always
met.
As mid-term approaches, good luck to all FMM students with their assignments and tests.

Junior Achievement
I am proud to announce that one of our business students Giancarlo Sessa has been selected as a FINALIST for
the First Year Achiever of the Year Award. He participated in the JACO Company Program after school. Only ten
finalists are chosen. With his ability, we are sure that Giancarlo will shine at his interview with the judges at Osler.
He now proceeds to phase two which determines the 2014 First Year Achiever winner!
Nipissing University Stock Market Challenge
The Economics and Accounting students participated in the Stock Market Simulation (SMS) game which is administrated by the School of Business
and Economics (SBE) of Nipissing University.
The National SMS is a stock market game for high school students. It is a stimulated market with a real time platform where the students can buy/sell
stocks, bonds, commodities and mutual funds. They are able to put limits and stop orders to get a feel of a real market transaction. This has encouraged
the students to research the current and financial news to make informed decisions on their strategies.
This is a web-based educational tool that teaches valuable economics, finance, current events, math, social studies and technology. Each team of students receive $500,000 of virtual dollars in a SMS brokerage account and simulates managing a portfolio by buying and selling stocks at real-time prices.
Students compete for scholarships and/or bragging rights.
Trading got underway on February 24, 2014 and ended April 4 after the markets closed. We are proud to announce that two of teams placed 2nd
and 4th in the competition out of over 2100 teams.
Coin 2014
The accounting students will be competing in ICAO accounting competition on May 21, 2014. The student associates who have registered will start
weekly preparation session starting on Wednesday April 9.
FMM Computer Club
In semester two, we had started a computer club. The president and main programmer is Apaar Madan. Their goal
for this year is to complete coding and drawing a complete game from scratch. The weekly meetings are on Wednesday
after school in room 325.
FMM Celebrates! McGivney
Graduate prepares for Ordination to the Priesthood
On March 2, 2014 staff and students from FMM CA attended the
annual Ordinandi Dinner at the
Pearson Convention Centre. The
dinner celebrates men from the
Archdiocese of Toronto who will
soon be ordained as Catholic
priests. This year was made more
special by the fact that one of those
young men, Rev. Neiman D’Souza,
is a former graduate of our school.
Rev. Neiman is completing his studies at St. Augustine’s Seminary, and will be ordained
to the priesthood this coming Mother’s Day. Rev. Neiman thanked the FMM community in his speech, and took the time to offer joyful support and
encouragement to our current FMM students in their faith development. Please join us in celebrating and praying for this wonderful young man as
he prepares to fully commit his life to God in service of the faithful.

McGivney’s Artistry
As we close another successful school year, the Arts department is
once again proud to recognize the talents and efforts of the students and staff. Our Specialist High Skills Major program continues
to grow with students showing continued interests in the arts as a
career. Our classes are filled with spirited individuals who continue
to make McGivney shine!
Our Annual Arts Banquet will take place on Friday, May 16th at
Crystal Fountain Banquet Hall. Tickets will go on sale in the middle
of April. All of McGivney’s Art students are invited to attend.
As the tradition continues, our Artists will gather to celebrate a
year of success with our Annual Arts Night. This gallery display of
all disciplines of art will showcase dramatic presentations, award
winning musical selections, stunning photography and design projects, and a Fashion show. This event is free and open to all members of the community!
Go, Go, Go Joseph!!
For the first time in many years our school held school-wide auditions for what turned out to be a major success! ‘Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ was performed to sold-out audiences on Thursday, April 3rd and Friday, April 4th. The buzz was so
strong about this production that our School Board Director,
Patricia Preston, was in attendance for one of our preview shows!
The Wednesday before we opened, we entertained over 350 students from various elementary schools in the area (many of whom
came back to see the show again).
Such a successful event is the result of much collaboration and
teamwork. Many afterschool hours – including weekends and holidays – were spent preparing actors, musicians, sets, props, costumes, lighting, sound, promotional items, etc. This project proved
to have a life of its own! The Arts Department will forever be in
the debt of the many teachers and staff that willingly gave their efforts and time to help create the magic! Thanks to all that came out
to support this production.

IB and the Arts
The 2013-14 school year has also seen a ‘dramatic’ increase to our
pre-IB program in the Arts. Currently there are 3 sections of courses
offered in both Drama and Visual Arts. These courses help to prepare our students for entering into the Diploma Program that starts
in grade 11. As an integral component of the IB Hexagon (group 6),
the Arts courses will provide our students with the well-rounded
approach to education. Stay tuned for the future inclusion of IB
courses offered in other Arts areas, i.e. Music.
Specialist High Skills Major – Arts and Culture
The students in the SHSM A&C program have been busy this year!
Students have had a variety of opportunities to explore a wide range
of art forms. In November, the Grade 12 students spent three days
in a local artist Pottery studio, learning how to throw their own
pieces. They learnt about molding the clay, working with their designs
on the wheel and finishing their work with colour glazes. In February,
the grade 11 and 12 students spent the day at the Varley Art Gallery
working with another local artist in a workshop on life drawings. Mid
February the students went out again to an artist studio in Alton
called the Mill, where several local artist have studios and offer workshops. The students participated in an introduction to Encaustic
Painting and a Glass Fusing workshop. In early April, the Grade 11
students completed their Health and Safety Training and in mid-May
they will attend a Theatre Lighting Certification at York University.

Mr. A. Ambida, Dean of Co-op
The cooperative education program is off to a great start. This semester we are pleased to offer 49 students a wonderful opportunity to explore the working world and participate in such a unique learning experience. We are proud to report that all students have been successfully
placed in a field of their future career choice, and are working towards earning 2, 3 or 4 credits. This Cooperative education experience will
assist our students in making career decisions as well as developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are essential in today’s workplace.
A program that runs concurrently with the coop program is the Dual Credit Program. This program allows students to experience college
while still in high school. They will have the opportunity to earn 2 credits (I high school & I college) from this one educational experience.
Through the partnership of Seneca, and Humber College, our grade 11 and 12 students are enrolled in the following courses: Early Childhood
Education, Introduction to Spa Management, Life Drawing, Introduction to Advertising, AutoCAD.
Also this semester, there are two students who have been accepted into an Accelerated Program. Congratulations go to Nellwyn Cepriaso and
Anthony Baccio. They have been accepted into Carpenters’ Local Union 27. They are working to complete the Level One in-school apprenticeship course and participate in Co-op/OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) with a placement in the carpentry industry. Keep up
the great work and we wish you both continued success.

The York Catholic District School Board is currently developing a multi-year strategic plan which will allow the Board to position itself for continued success as one of the top-performing school boards in
Ontario.
As part of this development process, a committee led by Director of Education, Patricia Preston is engaging the school board’s stakeholders to share their perspectives. As a valued stakeholder, all parents will be invited to provide their input via an online survey on York Catholic’s current performance,
as well as next steps for the future.
Beginning March 17, 2014, a short 10 minute online survey will be available on the board website at
www.ycdsb.ca. Look for the ‘Planning our Future Together’ link.
At the conclusion of the consultation phase, parent input will be taken into consideration with input
from other stakeholders, as well as research to develop a multi-year strategic plan.
Thank you in advance for your participation and ongoing support of the York Catholic District School
Board.
