1. TheprimeobjectiveofthePelicanBowlistostimulateinterestinthecurrentknowledgeandpracticesof
respiratorycare.Thecompetitionshallbeheldinaspiritofprofessionalismandgoodsportsmanship.
Therearenolosersinthiscontest.Allshouldgainfromthisexperienceagreaterunderstandingof
respiratorycareandthemselves.
2. WinnersNationalTeamPlay
Ø Winnersofeachlevel,practitionerandstudent,shouldconsideriftheyintendoncompetingatthe
2016—Oct.15–18(Saturday–Tuesday),SanAntonio,Texas.Ifyouoryourteamdoesnotintend

o Upto16teamswillbeenteredintothePBCompetition(IncludesPractitionerteamsandStudentteams).

4. PelicanBowlTeamComposition
o Ateamshallconsistofatleastthreeandnotmorethanfour(4)RespiratoryCarepractitioners/Students.
(AdoptedfromtheAARCSBrules2013).
o MemberEligibility
Ø Teammembers(hereinconsideredtheteam)mustbecurrentmembersingoodstandingofthe
AmericanAssociationforRespiratoryCare(AARC)asdeterminedbycurrentAARCbylaws.
Ø Anindividualmaybeamemberononlyoneteamenteredinthestate/national/studentcompetition.
Ø EachStudentPelicanBowlteammembermustbeacurrentstudentinaRespiratoryCareeducational
program,ormusthavegraduatedfromaRespiratoryCareeducationalprogramduringthecurrent
calendaryear.Thisstudentstatusmustbeverifiedforeveryteammember,andvalidatedbythe
student’sProgramDirector,ontheStudentPelicanBowlroster.
Ø Ateamfromanystatemayparticipate,butonlythetopLouisianaTeam(s)*willqualifyforNationals.(*
ateamwithallmemberscurrentlylicensedbytheLSBMEorstudentsofacurrentLouisianaRT
program)
Ø Ifmorethan16studentteamsregister,preferencewillbegrantedtoLouisianateamsfirsttofillthe
allotted16teams(aslongasrosterduedatesandrulesaremet).
Ø TeammembersmustberegisteredattheLSRCStateMeetingtoparticipateandtoqualifyfor
fundingatNationalsandmustbeAARCmembers.
5. FormatforStateCompetition
o Aseedingroundofplaywillbearandomdraw(1willplay2,3willplay4,andsoon…).(Note:ifanodd
numberofteamsentered,everyteamwillplayonegameandonerandomdrawteamwillplaytwowith
theirpointsaveragedforseeding)
o ThebracketroundswillbeaSingleEliminationformat.Seedingforthebracketroundswillbebasedon
theresultsoftheseedinground.
o Seedingforthebracketroundsareasfollows:
i. Theteamwiththehighestpointsscoredintheseedingroundgamewillbeseeded1standthesecond
highestpointsscoredwillbeseeded2ndandsoon….untilthelastteamisseeded.(noteanybyewillbe
grantedtothe1stseed)
ii. Tiebreakersareasfollows:
1. 1sttiebreakerislowestpointsallowed.
2. 2ndtiebreakeriscointosswilldecidedseeding
o Finalswillbebetweenthelastremaining4teamsafterseedingandbracketrounds.Thefinalswillbe
SingleEliminationformat.
o Nationalteamdivisionwillbehandinginasimilarmanner.
6. Moderators
o Themoderatorshallbesomeonefamiliarwiththeterminologyoftheprofessionandshallbeappointedby
theLSRCPelicanBowlCoordinator.
Themoderatorshallhavethepowerandoptiontoacceptorrejectananswerwithoutaskingforajudge's
ruling.Duringtheplayingofthegame,themoderatorisincharge.He/Shemustcontroltheactionsofthe
teams,judges,scorekeeper,timekeeperandaudience.
7. Judges(SchoolswillberequiredtohaveoneInstructorhelpwiththejudgingduties)
o Thejudgesshallbequalifiedindividualsintheirrespectivefields(twoormoreasavailable).
o Thejudgesshallnotbedirectlyrelatedtoteammembersinvolvedinanyindividualcontest.
o Thejudgesimpaneledforthecompetitionshallruleontheresponsetoanyquestionwhensodesiredby
themoderatorandindicatewhethertheyacceptorrejectateam'sanswer.Alldecisionsshallbefinaland
notreviewableorreversibleoncethereadingofthenextquestionhasstarted.
o Rotationforinstructorsshouldbeasfollows:
i. Anyschool/instructornothavingateamplayingshouldtakeonjudgingdutiesoratleastoffer
assistance.ThankYou!
8. TheCompetition
o Seedingandbracketrounds
Ø Agamewillconsistof:
• Twoteamsofuptothreememberseachcompetingatatime.
• Eight(8)minutesinlength.
• Theteamscoringthemostpointsattheendofeightminutesisthewinnerofthatgame.
Ø Whenateamfailstotaketheirseatswithintwominutesofbeingcalledatthetimeoftheirgame,they
shallforfeitthatgameatthemoderator’sdiscretion(scorewillbe10-0).
o SemifinalsandFinals
Ø Thegamewillconsistof:
• Twoteamsincompetition
• SemifinalsandFinals:Ten(10)minutesinlength.
• Theteamscoringthemostpointsattheendof10minutesisthewinnerofthatgame.
Ø Thewinnerofthechampionshipgamewillbeawardedfirstplace.Theloserofthechampionshipgame
willbeawardedsecondplace.
Ø Thelosersofthesemifinalgameswillbetiedforthirdplace.
o Themoderatorshallsignalthebeginningofeachgame.Thetimekeepershalltimethelengthofplayand
announcetheendofplay.Thescoreboardoperatorshallmaintainarunningscorevisibletoallparticipants
andaudience.Theprimaryscorekeeperwillkeeptherunningscoreviapencil/paper.
o DuringPlay:
Ø Themoderatorwillaskthepre-selectedquestions,indicatetheteamthathasrespondedfirstand
awaittheanswer.He/Shewilljudgethefirstanswergivenastoitscorrectness,andifcorrect,
indicatesotothescorekeeper(s).
Ø Theelementof“Risk/Reward”willexistthroughouttheentiregame.Ifateambuzzesinto
answerbeforethemoderatorhasfinishedreadingthequestion,themoderatorwillstopatthat
pointinthequestionandindicatetothatteamthattheyare“AtRisk”.Theteamthenhasten(10)
secondstobeginananswer.Teammembershavethelibertytoconferduringthistimeperiod.Ifthe
answeriscorrect,theyare“Rewarded”withapoint.Iftheanswerisincorrect,apointwillbe
deductedfromtheirscore.Thenthemoderatorwillturntotheopposingteam,re-readthequestion
andgivethatteamten(10)secondstobeginananswer.Ifthatteamiscorrect,theyscoreapoint.If
theyareincorrect,apointwillnotbedeductedfromtheirscore.Themoderatorwilljudgethefirst
answergivenbyanyteamastoitscorrectness,andifcorrect,indicatesotothescorekeeper.
Ø Ateamwillneverbe“AtRisk”iftheyrespondtoaquestionafterthemoderatorhasfinished
readingit.
Ø Iftheywish,eachteam,oncepergame,mayusealifelinecalled“AskanExpert”.Thislifelinewill
become“CallyourPosse”duringtheFinalscompetition.
Ø “AskanExpert/CallyourPosse”
Ø Inpreliminarycompetition,eachteammustsubmitthenameoftheir“Expert”totheSputumBowl
committeepriortothestartofeachgame.Theteammaychoosewhomevertheywishexcept
anyoneontheSputumBowlCommitteeoranyjudgewhoispresidingduringtheround.Whena
teamrespondstoaquestionandwishestousethelifeline,theywillannouncetothemoderatorthat
theywouldliketoasktheir“Expert”.The“Expert”mustbereadilyavailabletojointheteamfor
thesinglequestion.Theteamwillhave15secondstotaltobeginananswer.“Risk/Reward”will
applywhenusingyourexpert.
Ø InFinalscompetition,eachteamwillcomposeupto8peoplefortheirpossepriortotheevening’s
contest.The“Posse”willsitatthechairsreservedforthematthefrontoftheroom.The“Posse”
o
willberesponsibletoanswerthequestionwithoutconsultationwiththeirteam.“Risk/Reward”
willapplywhenusingyour“Posse”.
Ø Duringthefinal2minutesofeachpreliminaryandfinalcontest,themoderatorwillswitchtothe
rapidquestionbank.Themoderatorwillannouncethetransition.Afterthe2:00minutemark,no
slidequestionswillbeaskednorwillany“AskanExpert/CallyourPosse”lifelinesbeallowed.
Ø Ifaquestionisthrownoutatanytimeduringagame,thenextquestionwillbeatoss-up,offthe
clock.Anyteammayansweratoss-upquestion.
Ø Ifneitherteamrespondstoaquestionwithintensecondsafterthemoderatorhascompletedits
reading,thequestionwillbesetasideandquestioningwillcontinue.
Ø Eachcorrectanswertoaquestionwillhaveavalueofonepoint.
Ø SuddenDeathPlayoffs:Tiegamesattheendofregulationplayshallberesolvedbyasuddendeathplayoff.Thefirst
teamtoscorethreepointsshallbedeclaredthewinner.Thepenaltyphasedoesnotapplyduringsuch
suddendeathplayoffs.Risk/Reward”willapplybutnot“AsktheExpert/CallyourPosse”duringthe
suddendeathplayoff.
Ø Anyquestionbegunpriortotheendofregulationplayshallbecompletedinaccordancewiththeabove
rulesifeitherteamhasrespondedpriortotheendofplay.(Elapsedtimeto0:00asdeterminedbythe
time/scoreboardkeeper.)
9. ElectronicsSystems
o Thedeviceshallbeconstructedtoprovidethefollowing:
Ø Handswitchesforeachcontestant.
Ø Indicatorsystemtoshowwhichteamhasrespondedfirst.
Ø Timermechanismtotimeresponsesof10secondsforinitialresponseandtimerfor10secondswhen
thequestionisgiventotheopposingteam.
Ø Resetdevicefortimekeepertoresetsysteminpreparationforthenextquestion.
Ø Timekeepershallbethepersonincontrolofthedeviceandshallhaveathoroughworkingknowledgeof
thedevice.
o Inthecaseofanelectronicmalfunction,anyPelicanBowlCommitteememberorjudgeshallimmediately
notifythemoderatorwhowillcalltime.Thegameclockshallberesettothetimewhenthemalfunctionwas
firstnoticed.Thequestioninprogressshallbethrownout.Themoderatorshallsignaltimeinandbegin
withanewquestion.Nopointsmaybeawardedonthequestionthrownoutnormaytheybedeductedifin
thepenaltyphase.Priortorestartingplaythemoderatorshallmakecertainthatallsystemsareoperational
andclear.
o Norecordingdevicesofanykindwillbepermittedduringcontests(audio,video,or
written).
10. RulesModification:TheLSRCPelicanBowlCoordinator/moderatormaymodifytheruleswithoutnoticeinafair
andunbiasedwayathis/herdiscretioninanefforttokeepthecontestinawell-organizedmanner.
