Over a period of fifteen months, 68 members of the Resistance were shot there, including the Abbé Bonpain, and then, as if to erase all traces of these massacres, the Germans blew up the Fort in 1944. To d a y, a M u s e u m o f t h e Resistance, set up in the still intact blockhouses, pays tribute to these courageous fighters. A statue by Eugène Dodeigne with the name of Témoignage, or Witness, portrays the movement of a body as it crumbles under the bullets of the firing squad. The History is there too, almost discreet, camouflaged behind a mound of earth, Bondues’ fort, or at least what remains of it. Built in the XIXth century, like thirteen others, to defend Lille, Fort Lobau was not a lot of help during the two Lille Métropole 35 Bondues, according to the angle adopted by its promoters, is a town with artistic and historical associations. The Art is the Château du Vert-Bois, owned by the Prouvost family which for over 25 years, through its Foundation and its exhibitions, put the great names of paintings in the limelight and also helped to bring young talent to the notice of the public. A trail for all seasons, although the best time of year is between April and October. A B C D E F Au départ de Bondues (5.5 or 8 km - 1 hr 50 or 2 hr 40) 1 Start: Fort or square, Bondues 1 Fort Lobeau, a military structure on the strategic axis between Lille and Ghent was built in the late XIXth century. Inside, a Museum of the Resistance traces, each in their turn, the refusal to accept, the courage, the commitment and finally the sacrifice of these “soldiers of the shadows”, through the recounting of the tragic journey of 68 members of the resistance who fell under the bullets of the Nazi oppressors. Go on up to the roundabout and head off in the direction of Roncq and Halluin (here is a pedestrian track alongside the avenue du Général De Gaulle). Note to your right the Chapelle de la Quenouille. 2 Cross the road and take the chemin de la Chanterelle and then, at the end, turn left into the chemin de Gueldre. These two tracks on the foothills of the Ferrain district offer wide views over the Marque plain and the rapidly changing urban landscape of the metropolis. 3 At the intersection, continue straight ahead to the Fondation Septentrion. Pass by the craft village and the Château du Vert Bois until you reach the rue de Tourcoing. The Fondation Prouvost stages cultural events all year round, whilst the Château du Vert Bois, a historic monument and in private ownership, opens its numerous collections to the public every summer. 4 Turn left and then right towards Roncq and Halluin. 250 m further on, turn left onto the “chemin à carriot”, also called the “Train de Car”, the Carrière Lagache, leading to the rural residential areas of Les Bois Blancs and Le Pot de Follow the guide! Arrows, marker posts and paint marks are positioned all along the various circuits. Au départ de Bondues 5 2 Change of direction 4 Go down the cobbled track to the route de Linselles, then turn along to the right. 6 Turn left into road 33 of the Domaine de la Vigne – a residential estate on a golf course – which leads to the rue René d’Hespel, heading towards the town centre. As you are passing by, note on your left the old country manor, the manoir de l’Espadoue. 7 3 7 8 Turn right and cross the RN 354 with care. 8 At the intersection with the René d’Hespel, go back up towards the town centre along the pedestrian avenue. Note the bluestone Chapelle du Vœu and the porch at the entrance to the farm known as the Ferme de l’Hôtel. 9 Place de l’Abbé Bonpain: you will come out opposite the church and the Mairie. At the other end of the square, take the rue du Fort Montagne. After 100 m, take the Bas de l’Enfer footpath on the left. 10 Turn right along the rue César Loridan, through the S-bends and then, at the next junction, turn left onto the chemin Saint-Georges heading towards the Fort. The chemin SaintGeorges offers views of the Deûle plain over towards Wambrechies. As you pass by, note the plaque mentioning the Chapelle la Croix and the great plague epidemic of 1668-1669. Pass by the Pavé du Bas Chemin on your left. The road takes you gently downhill towards a former farm. Take the Pot de Fer to the left. The track winds along to finish up at the Pavé du Bas Chemin.
