Pillow Mustang Memoirs The Pillow Academy Alumni Publication • Summer 2009 Maxine Harper Will be Honored as Alumnus of the Year on August 22 M AXINE HARPER of Greenwood (‘74) has been named the recipient of the 2009 Alumnus of the Year Award. She will be recognized on August 22nd in a special ceremony. (See page 2.) When a senior at Pillow, Maxine was selected for the Pillow Academy Hall of Fame. The entry in the 1974 Mustang Memories reads: “Once in a great while a person comes along who influences the lives of anyone she meets. Maxine Harper is definitely this kind of person. Besides being a person of strong character, she has won many academic awards. Maxine was a member of the Latin Club, science club, and honor club. Her academic excellence was exhibited when she was awarded valedictorian of the 1974 graduating class. Maxine Harper is certainly most deserving of membership into the 1974 Hall of Fame.” After leaving Pillow, Maxine continued on her path of success. She enrolled at Delta State University where she received a B.S.Ed. in Special Education in 1978. From DSU, she went to Mississippi State University and earned an M. Ed. in Special Education in 1979. Next came an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Supervision from DSU in 1987. Dr. Harper worked as a special education teacher in the Leflore County School for Handicapped Children/Greenwood Public Schools from 1980 until 1987. She then worked as a computer programmer and educational specialist (1987-1997) for Micro-Sped Computer Consultants. Next, she became President and Director of Product Development (1997-2000) for Software Solutuions, Inc., in Greenwood. In 2000, Dr. Harper began working in various capacities at the University of Mississippi. She began as a Research Analyst in the Center for Educational Research and Evaluation, but she has served since then as an adjunct faculty member, Associate Director of the Center for Educational Research and Evaluation, and presently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor and Interim Director of the Center for Educational Research and Evaluation. Maxine has been successful in obtaining a number of major grants and has received many professional honors and awards at Ole Miss including Outstanding Grant Writer and Outstanding Researcher. In 2008 she was named UM’s College of Education Alumna of the Year. Dr. Harper has published numerous articles in scholarly journals. In addition, she authored and Maxine (left) with her cousin Emmy Harper Stone (‘80) at Maxine’s book signing at Turnrow Books in Greenwood on June 12, 2009. Emmy read an exerpt from Dr. Harper’s Journey of Hope to a packed house of Maxine Harper fans! self-published Daffodils in the Snow: A Weekly Bible Study/Devotional in 1996. Her most recent book, Journey of Life, was released in June. In this autobiography, Maxine “shares her struggles and triumphs as she climbed the educational ladder” as an individual with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Dr. Maxine Harper’s story is a “must read” inspirational account of her walk through the seasons of life, from early childhood to her present career. Louis Coleman is Drafted by the Kansas City Royals Coleman also received 2009 All-America recognition from Collegiate Baseball magazine and was named to the first-team All-America squad. He is the 18th LSU player to earn first-team AllAmerica accolades in the past 22 seasons. He is one of six pitchers on the 17-man first-team roster. LSU Pitcher LOUIS COLEMAN (’05), who was unanimously selected the 2009 SEC Pitcher of the Year, was drafted to play for the Kansas City Royals in the 5th round on June 11th. In the regular season, Louis had the most victories among SEC pitchers , the second lowest earned run average, the third most innings pitched and the fourth highest number of strikeouts. Reacting to the announcement, LSU Coach Paul Mainieri said, “I can’t find any new words to say about that young man and what he has meant to our program and what he has done for our team.” According to Tim Kalich’s editorial comments in the May 21, 2009, issue of the Greenwood Commonwealth, “ Having postponed his dream to pitch professionally, Coleman returned this year for his senior season in Baton Rouge. He is a big reason why LSU is ranked No. 2 in the country and is considered one of the teams with a good shot at winning the national championship.” Louis is the son of Kathy and Hal Coleman (‘77) of Schlater. He has three sisters. Meredith (‘02) is the softball coach and a teacher at Pillow and former softball standout at DSU; Lauren (‘07) is a softball player at Mississippi College; and Katy (‘12) is a 10th grade softball and basketball player as well as a cheerleader at Pillow. Bob Hardeman Distinguished Mustang Award Dr. John F. Lucas, Jr. is Selected to Receive the Bob Hardeman Distinguished Mustang Award DR. JOHN FAIR LUCAS, JR., a founding patron of Pillow Academy, has been tapped to receive the 2009 Bob Hardeman Distinguished Mustang Award on Saturday, August 22, at the Greenwood Country Club. The Bob Hardeman Distinguished Mustang Award was established in 2008 in honor of longtime supporter Bob Hardeman. The award is given each year to an individual who has made the success of Pillow Academy a priority in his/her life. Mr. Ellett Lawrence was the first recipient in 2008. Dr. Lucas, a native and lifelong resident of Greenwood, completed Tulane Medical School in 1955. After doing his internship and surgical residency, he served as a Medical Officer in the Navy for two years before returning to Greenwood in 1963 to practice medicine with his father. His oldest son, John III, returned to join the practice following his training at Duke University in July of 1988. They practiced together for nineteen years before John Fair’s retirement in June of 2007. Dr. Lucas served on the Pillow school board from 1971 - 1977 and served as president of the board from 1974-1977. His late wife, Sethelle, who also served on the school board, has the distinction of being the first female board member. Dr Lucas has served on the Pillow endowment board since its inception in 1993 and also served as the Pillow Mustangs’ team doctor for many years. He and his late wife helped establish the John Lucas IV Teaching Fund. They had five children who all attended Pillow Academy. John III (‘73), a vasular and general surgeon, and his wife, Dr. Marsha Lucas, live in Greenwood. All of their children attended Pillow, and John currently serves on the school board. Sethelle (Tell) Lucas Flowers (‘74) is a dermatologist in Jackson and is married to Pillow Alumnus Dr. Hal Flowers (‘74). Aubrey (‘78), a hand surgeon, and his wife, Toni, live in Jackson. Aubrey was a member of the first class to graduate from Pillow that began Pillow as first graders. Beth Lucas Naaman (‘77) is a dental hy- gienist, and she and her husband, Mickey, who is also a Pillow grad (‘77), live in Greenville. The youngest son, Robert, who also attended Pillow, lives in Jackson and has his PhD in Theology. Robert teaches Bible on the junior college level. Dr. John Fair Lucas is currently married to Mary Dent. RECOGNITION CEREMONY INFORMATION DR. JOHN FAIR LUCAS JR. , along with Alumnus of the Year DR. MAXINE HARPER, will be honored on Saturday, August 22, 2009, at the Greenwood Country Club. The event is scheduled to kick-off with a social at 7:00 which will be followed with dinner and a recognition ceremony at 7:30. Marc Biggers (’01) earned his medical degree, magna cum laude, and received several awards from the University of Mississippi Medical School. He received the Medical Reunion Scholarship and the Robert M. Hearin Support Foundation Scholarship, and he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He is currently residing in Memphis. Don Brock, Jr. (’88) was named one of the Top Young Professionals under 40 in the 2009 Greenwood Commonweath’s 2009 Class. Brock is an attorney with Whittington, Brock, & Swayze. Mary Cecil Brown (’00) of Oxford and Carroll Turnley Patton were married on May 30, 2009. She was employed with Tupelo Public Schools, and he is employed with Coca Cola Enterprises. They are making their home in New Orleans. Richard Brown (’99) and Amy Lyn Springfield were married June 27, 2009, in Greenwood. Richard received his degree in political science from the University of Mississippi and is currently employed by Brown Farms of Schlater. Katie Bledsoe Buford (’05) is among the 2009 initiates into Phi Kappa Phi academic honor society at the University of Mississippi. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is the university’s highest interdisciplinary honor. After graduation from the University of Mississippi in May, Katie moved to Charleston, SC, to attend physical therapy school. Shelby Cade (’06) appeared in the national Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival April 14-19 at the Kennedy Center in Washington. She is a junior at USM majoring in theater performance. She was selected from a group of 200 who were competing for the honor. Kathy Murphy Clark (‘72) was named Pillow Academy’s high school Teacher of the Year. The Teacher of the Year program, adopted for the first time this year, is sponsored by local businesses and provides the recipient a cash award. Two recipients were selected: one from the high school and the other from the elementary school. Recipients are selected from nominations submitted by fellow faculty members. Rima Williams was selected as the elementary Teacher of the Year. Kathy graduated from Pillow in 1972 and came back to her alma mater to teach math. She has taught at Pillow for thirty years and is considered to be by both her colleagues and her students to be one of Pillow’s most dedicated teachers. Amanda Brown Coleman (’04) earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She was a dean’s scholar. Bill Crump (’71) was named the 2009 Greenwood Leflore Country Chamber of Commerce President. Crump is the director of governmental affairs and special assistant to the president of Viking Range Corp. He follows Tish Bowie Goodman (’84) who served as President for 2008. Kristen Miller Duthu (’06) and Robert Louis Tanksley, Jr.(’04) were married on June 13 at Wister Gardens in Belzoni. Kathryn Sturdivant Dyksterhouse (’98) and husband Gary of Greenwood announce the birth of their daughter Mary Elaine Dyksterhouse on January 3, 2009. Maggie Malouf Estess (’97) and husband Will of Birmingham, AL, announce the birth of their twin boys, William Chase and Charles Ethan Estess, on August 25, 2008. Sloane Porter Fair (’02) graduated from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she received her doctorate in physical therapy. She was presented an Academic Excellence Award, which is awarded to students in the Department of Physical Therapy who achieve a grade point average of 3.75 or better every semester of enrollment. Alisha Helen Farrish (’02) earned a doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She is a 2006 graduate of Mississippi College. Martin Fisher (‘07) was elected Secretary of the Student Body Association this spring at Ole Miss. Scott Goldberg (‘00) and Anne NIcole Bayer will be married on July 4, 2009, at the RitzCarlton In Dallas, TX. Scott is employed as the CEO of Texas Sandwich Investors, Inc. Jocelyn Christine Gong (’01) and Thomas Carl Rollins, Jr., of Columbus were married December 20, 2009. She is employed as a registered nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at UMC in Jackson. He was awarded a juris doctorate from Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson in May. Ashley Suzanne Gragson (’05) earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Andy Gore (‘01 ) was named to the President’s List of Delta Scholars at DSU this www.PillowAcademy.com spring. This group represents the “cream of the crop” at DSU and is an indication of the efforts a student puts into his or her academic work. Andy spent five years in the US Marines where he served his country as a harrier jet electronic technician and then as a marine embassy guard. After the marines, he enrolled at MDCC and then transferred to DSU where he is pursuing a career in physical therapy. He and his wife, the former Laura Overstreet, live in Drew. McKee Guenther (’08) graduated from the U.S. Marine Corps First Recruit Training Battalion at Paris Island, SC, on January 30. His military occupational specialty is in aviation operations. Andy Hackelman (’95) was named one of the Top Young Professionals under 40 in the 2009 Greenwood Commonweath’s 2009 Class. Andy is owner of Magnolia Home Center in Greenwood. Justin Hancock (’06), an accounting major at MSU, was recently elected president of Beta Alpha Psi Honor Society. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. Justin is a senior with a 3.97 grade point average. Jeff Hardin (’97) was named one of the Top Young Professionals under 40 in the 2009 Greenwood Commonweath’s 2009 Class. Jeff is a registered nurse and marketing representative for Continue Care Home Health and Hospice. Sarah Hoque (’02) received the Ottilie Schillig Memorial Scholarship from the University of Mississippi Medical School. He is an internal auditor at Motion Industries in Birmingham, and she is the senior financial sales representative at Compass Bank in Birmingham. Lindy Claire Leflore (’00) and Byron Trent Turner (’94) will be married July 9, 2009, on the beach in Sea Grove, FL. She is a registered nurse in a surgical intensive care unit in Panama City, FL, and he is employed as a general contractor and owner of Triton Building Systems LLC. Wade Litton (’98) was named one of the Top Young Professionals under 40 in the 2009 Greenwood Commonweath’s 2009 Class. Wade is general manager of Wade, Inc., in Greenwood. Kelli Lott (‘04), who graduated from MDCC’s Dental Hygiene Program in May 2009, will be married to Andrew Stainback (‘03) on August 1st. They will make their home in Greenwood. Dr. Aubrey Bell Lucas (’78) and Toni Sorrell were married on January 10, 2009. She is a registered nurse, and he is an orthopedic and hand surgeon in Jackson. Barry Makamson (’92) was named one of the Top Young Professionals under 40 in the 2009 Greenwood Commonweath’s 2009 Class. Barry is sales manager with Allstate Insurance. Steven Makamson (’97) was named one of the Top Young Professionals under 40 in the 2009 Greenwood Commonweath’s 2009 Class. Steven is the boy’s basketball coach at Pillow Academy and is youth minister at First Baptist Church. Edi Williams McIlwain (’99) and husband Andrew of Southaven announce the birth of their daughter, Olivia Clare McIlwain, on December 26, 2008. Floyd Melton III (’90) was named one of the Top Young Professionals under 40 in the 2009 Greenwood Commonweath’s 2009 Class. Floyd is an attorney at Melton Law Firm, PLLC. Mitch Mitchell (’79) of Greenwood passed away on January 27, 2009, after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Mitch was a source of support and encouragement for the Pillow Academy Lady Mustangs, attending almost every basketball game at home or away. He will be greatly missed by many. His daughter, Devin, is a rising junior at Pillow. Other survivors are his wife, Karen; his son, Colby; his parents, Billy and Ellen; and his brother, Scott. Jason Moss (‘05) was among 30 Mississippi State students initiated into Tau Beta Pi international engineering honor society. Gary Nash (’01) recently earned a medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He began his residency in internal medicine at Baptist Health System in Birmingham. Michael Nix (’97) and wife Megan of Greenwood announce the birth of their daughter Kylee Brooke Nix on July 9, 2008. She weighed 7 lbs. 2 ozs. Mary Kathryn Patterson (’04) earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She was a dean’s scholar and a member of the Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society. Melissa Pigott (‘05) graduated from MDCC’s Dental Hygiene Program in May 2009. Stephen Pillow (’87) was named the 2009 Young Farmer of the Year at the Greenwood Leflore Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting. Stephen, who serves on the PA Alumni Association Council, is married to the former Kim Humbarger. They have two children who are currently attending PA: son, Baylor, and daughter, Mary Dudley. Ann-Hamilton Pittman (’01) and Jeffrey Ryan Lloyd were married on October 18, 2008. They are living in Brandon, MS. Rebecca Riley (‘04) and Noland Howard (‘03) will be married July 11th in Greenwood. Rebecca is currently teaching first grade at Pillow, and Noland is engaged in farming. Anna Rose Miller (’03) and Walter Davis Makamson (’03) were married on March 14, 2009. The bride is a CT technologist at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, and the groom is a farmer. Ryan Robertson (’98) was named one of the Top Young Professionals under 40 in the 2009 Greenwood Commonweath’s 2009 Class. Ryan practices law at Upshaw, Williams, Biggers, Beckham & Riddick, LLP. Laura Mims (’01) earned a master’s degree in occupational therapy from the University of Mississippi recently. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in English or history. The recipient must have an outstanding academic record and demonstrate exemplary citizenship and character. Austin West Smith (‘97) and Mary Margaret Morgan of Germantown, TN, were married on August 2, 2008. They are currently living in Chapel Hill, NC. Micajah Sturdivant (’97) of Jackson and Grace Gore of Grenada will be married on October 17, 2009. Micajah, the president of the Pillow Academy Alumni Association, is the director of asset management at the MMI Hotel Group in Jackson. He is a summa cum laude graduate from Ole Miss and received his master’s degree in business from Harvard Business School in Boston. Grace, who served as the 2007 Miss Tennessee, is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in audiology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Kristen Makamson Trusty (’98) and husband Reed (’93) of Greenwood announce the birth of their son John Reed Trusty III on December 2, 2008. Jeff Warren (’89) was named one of the Top Young Professionals under 40 in the 2009 Greenwood Commonweath’s 2009 Class. Jeff is a partner at the CPA firm of BFMW Group, PLLC. Caleb Whites (’07) was named the recipient of the Stonestreet Award at Mississippi Delta Community College. The Stonestreet Award, which was named in honor of former Sunflower Junior College coach and math instructor J. D. Stonestreet, is the highest honor that can be bestowed on a male athlete at MDCC. Stribling Whites (‘04) and Ben Hargett (‘03) were married on June 6, 2009, in Greenwood. Stribling received her master’s degree in accounting from Ole Miss in May and will be employed with Deloitte in Memphis, TN, in September. Ben received his bachelor’s degree in business management from Ole Miss and is currently employed with Security Check of Oxford. They are living temporarily in Oxford. Dr. Kathy Jo Tingle Wilson (’72) recently moved to Hickory, NC, where she is practicing medicine in the field of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine. She is joined by her husband, Mike, who is retired from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, and her son, Jeffrey.
