Austrian Design DETAILS
On the occasion of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile from 9 to 14 April 2013 56
representatives of Austrian furniture design will be surprising visitors with their latest
ideas in Milan's Salone dei Tessuti
At the same time as the 2013 Salone Internazionale del Mobile Austrian designers, manufacturers and
long-established companies will be presenting inventive talent, precise craftsmanship and
technological edge as their common trademark at the Austrian Design DETAILS show for a period of
six days. This exhibition, which is already taking place for the fourth time, is being organised by
ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA with the support of go-international – an initiative of Austria's Federal
Ministry of Economy, Family and Youth and the Austrian Economic Chamber – and the Austrian
furniture industry.
Successfully marketing Austrian design on an international scale
"With a total of 56 exhibitors the very strong and lively interest shown by Austrian designers,
manufacturers and long-established companies in jointly showing what they can do at the event with
the motto "Austrian Design DETAILS" in Milan just cannot be denied. I am delighted that this year
ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA is once again helping the sector to collectively make a successful
appearance in Milan in addition to the design shows at Barcelona and New York, so specifically
driving forward the global marketing of Austrian design", commented Dr. Walter Koren, head of
ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA.
Milan – the centre of international furniture and design
The Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan is the world's most important trade fair in the furniture
sector and the annual benchmark event for designers. Taking place every spring for over half a
century – this year for the 52nd time – this key design fair attracts some 300,000 visitors to Italy's
creative metropolis. "Milan is THE centre of the international furniture and design sector. Anyone who
is anything in the world of design will be coming to the international furniture fair in April 2013. This
highlight in the designers' calendar offers inspiration and insights into the latest trends and
developments. In addition, the export figures of the Italian furniture sector are a bright spot in Italy's
economy", was the satisfied comment of Dr. Michael Berger, Austrian Trade Commissioner in Milan.
Furniture design: an international factor for success
Furniture from Austria enjoys an excellent reputation both at home and abroad. Besides offering
traditional values such as sound craftsmanship, industrial precision and great flexibility of production,
the Austrian furniture sector has for many years put its trust in premium-quality furniture design. This is
why people from this branch do not want to miss the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. "In
April the attention of anyone interested in design and furniture throughout the world will turn to Milan.
Several hundred visitors are expected there. They want to see the very best work – and this is exactly
where we are positioning ourselves", remarked Heinz Hofer-Wittmann, managing partner of Wittmann
Möbelwerkstätten GmbH. "The exhibition 'Austrian Design DETAILS' offers a unique opportunity for
drawing international attention to the skilled craftsmanship and design expertise of the Austrian
furniture industry, so helping it to break into new markets. Design is the key to greater competitiveness
and exports." At this special show the firms Bene, Haapo 1910, TEAM 7, VITEO, Wiesner-Hager and
Wittmann will all be making outstanding contributions to the design of interiors, office furniture and
outdoor space.
New venue for the Austrian show
This year the products and product lines are being exhibited for the very first time at the Salone dei
Tessuti in Milan's Via San Gregorio 29. The Salone dei Tessuti (Italian for "salon of textiles ") owes its
name to the well-known fabric company Galtrucco, which was based at this historical building dating
from the 1920s. After the business was closed down, the former textiles outlet has been reborn as a
multifunctional hall for hosting projects, exhibitions and fashion shows not far from the central Piazza
della Repubblica. Conversion and renovation of this venue was aimed at retaining the authentic
features of this historical building and its rooms. Here the original core of the salone such as the oak
flooring, stucco work and marble pillars have been preserved and refurbished.
The whole is more than the sum of its parts
The design studio MARCH GUT from Linz was commissioned with developing the exhibition concept
for 2013. Its two industrial designers Christoph March and Marek Gut see benefit and necessity as
initiators for the process of design. Design frequently revolves around the look, the impact and the
aesthetics of a product. Greater importance is attributed to what is visible. MARCH GUT has
deliberately taken a different approach in addressing Austrian design for the exhibition concept to be
applied in Milan and is venturing a look behind the scenes at this year's Austrian presentation. Here
they always have the future in their sights. A perspective that scrutinises existing products and
accentuates the details that will still be of value in years to come.
In keeping with the motto Austrian Design DETAILS, MARCH GUT is focusing on the exceptional
design details that make the exhibited products and product lines into special highlights, such as an
innovative combination of materials or an unusual story to the visible result of the design. This will
allow visitors to look beneath the surface and get a feel for how the individual parts all interact.
Austrian Design DETAILS thus communicates two key aspects here: an in-depth insight into the
Austrian design landscape and the variety of approaches to design.
"We need to be open if we are to absorb many influences, to be curious to tap into the spirit of the
time, to be critical to constantly improve existing solutions, to keep a distance to always maintain an
outside view, to be patient to give new ideas time to develop and to be passionate in order to turn
them into unique products", was how Christoph March and Marek Gut describe their approach. The
two designers founded the MARCH GUT label in 2010 and offer their services in the fields of furniture,
lighting and interiors. The focus of their work is the investigation of interiors and the creation of
emotion.
