The Future is Now!
We are building a new senior/social service center in Delray Beach!
Thanks to a grant of $2 million from the state, we now have the seed money to build a 20,000 square foot
building near Temple Anshei Shalom on Atlantic Avenue, west of Jog Road. To meet the ever increasing
needs of our community, our new building will house:
n
Expanded Forster Family Kosher Food Pantry
n
Congregate Kosher meal site
n
Counseling
n
Support groups
n
The Welcome Home drop-in center for chronically mentally ill adults
n
Holocaust survivor services
n
…And a café for bagels and schmoozing!

Message From CEO & President
September 1, 2006 through August 31, 2007 was a year of growth and excitement for Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service (RRJFS).
RRJFS was the recipient of a three year contract from the Area Agency on Aging, in the amount of $1.7 million for each of the
three years, naming us as the lead agency serving seniors in south Palm Beach County. Being awarded this contract underscores the community’s confidence in us to continue to serve the most vulnerable elderly in our service area— no matter how
adverse the circumstances. Our scope of services expanded dramatically and we were delighted to form new alliances and creatively collaborate with organizations ranging from area schools, nursing homes, foundations and home health care agencies.
Inter-generational programs enable us to combine our service delivery expertise in the areas of teens and seniors. Through a
grant from The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties, we are able to expand our successful Teen Connect
program and match teens from Olympic Heights High School in Boca Raton with seniors at area assisted living facilities. We
were also recognized for our high quality services when Caridad Center asked to to develop their mental health counseling
program. Thanks to funding from Hands on Tzedakah, we placed a Spanish-speaking social worker at the Caridad Center, to
counsel migrant workers.
We also want to express our gratitude to an anonymous contributor, whose generous donation will pay for full fellowships
to train master of social work students to be the future leaders of agencies like our own. We are working closely with the
Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University in New York, to develop the RRJFS South Florida Fellowship for Social
Work Excellence.
By the year’s end we had acquired land in west Delray Beach, near Temple Anshei Shalom, to build a 20,000-square-foot senior
center. You can see the architect’s beautiful rendering on the facing page. What a way to end an exhilarating year!
Of course, none of these exciting projects would have been possible without the extraordinary support of many individual,
corporate, community and governmental donors who enabled us to reach this new level. We must express a special “thank
you” to our community partners, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, the Area Agency on Aging, the Children’s
Services Council and United Way for their continuing support. Together, they all allow us to fulfill our mission and pledge to
strengthen our commitment to the 35,000 clients we serve annually.
Every day, through your help, we are making a difference in people’s lives.
Thank you.

Thanks to these very generous and hard working neighbors for helping to accomplish the Ruth Rales
Jewish Family Service mission!
Addison Reserve
Forty volunteers packed 250 goodie bags for RRJFS’ elderly clients at a Passover model Seder. This
“Mitzvah Crew” stuffed the bags with food they bought and delighted clients with a surprise $25 gift
card from CVS. Addison Reserve’s Don and Sharon Kabat, Harriet Mironov and Barbara Feingold organized the project
and obtained a gift from Steinberg Global Management of Boca Raton. After lunch, Sharon Kabat played
piano while the crowd danced and sang Yiddish songs.
Polo Club
The Polo Club of Boca Raton donated $5,000 to RRJFS to buy gift cards so its youngest clients could
purchase shoes, sweaters and school supplies. The club’s Community Relations Committee, co-chaired
by Ronni Brockman and Nate Miller, raised the funds so families with financial difficulties could shop at
Target, Wal-Mart and Simon Malls.
One nine-year-old girl had refused to attend school because she was the only child without supplies. Her
mother told RRJFS, “Now she can hold her head up high and enjoys school.”
St. Andrews
Several dozen volunteers regularly deliver food to low-income families. In addition, the state honored
two St. Andrews residents, Herbert & Judith Levy as “Florida’s Grandparents of the Year.”

Awards / Celebrations
It was a banner year for Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service. In the same 12-month period the state of
Florida honored three of the agency’s volunteers with prestigious prizes.
The state awarded Sandy Klein, a 25-year-volunteer and founder of the “Diamond Club,” a social group
for people over age 75, “State Volunteer of the Year.”
The state honored Judy and Herbert Levy as “Florida’s Grandparents of the Year,” for delivering food
to RRJFS clients. The Levy’s 12-year-old grandson, Dylan, nominated them with a drawing of the three
bringing meals to a home during a rainstorm.
The Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service praised RRJFS for training the
chronically mentally ill participants who visit its daily drop-in center, to be volunteers to help King’s Point
with hurricane readiness. The Welcome Home attendees stuffed bags with handy items for the next big
storm for every apartment in the development.
Dr. Jaclynn Faffer celebrated her 10th anniversary as CEO, and Mark Cherny, supervisor of outreach and
community services, was named “RRJFS Employee of the Year.”

Testimonials
“Please Accept My Heartfelt Gratitude”
In the last 13 years, CareLink has helped hundreds of families around the country, who are concerned
about their elderly relatives in south Palm Beach County and need RRJFS to provide personal care. Here
is what some of them had to say:
Mr. Horowitz has been an absolute delight...he has always
acted professionally and diligently. His attention to detail has
been most impressive. His knowledge…has proven to be enormously valuable resource to my parents…he has been instrumental in allowing my Mother and Father to continue to live on their
own.”
“You should be very proud of the much needed service that
you provide to the community.”

I am writing to tell you how helpful the CareLink program has
been to our family…It allowed us to keep my father-in-law in his
Century Village home for as long as possible. Howard Horowitz
was exceptionally caring, helpful and experienced. He frequently
visited and called me with a detailed report…he was kind and
he was professional. He always followed through…I am grateful
that Jewish Family Service was there to help.

Mr. Horowitz’s positive attitude and willingness to help

to cooperate coupled with a passion for caring assistance.

As my mother’s 30-year-battle with cancer was beginning to
slip into its final stages, we were fortunate to have found you as
a friend...to wend our way through the choices of nursing homes,
home health aides and support for my father. You were consistently helpful and you were always respectful of my parent’s
needs while being honest with their children.

Words alone will never be able to thank you enough for all
your kindness and courtesy in helping us to provide proper care
for my mother. You helped guide us so that we could make the
right decisions that afforded my mother her dignity to her very last
day. For this we will always be indebted to you and the services of
Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service.
Without your presence in our lives I don’t know how we would
have handled the problems we incurred with my mother…you are
my angel on earth…Words alone will never be able to thank you
enough for being there with us.

Mental Health Services
This year, we offered 5,184 clinical sessions. We also ran 9,217 hours of caregiver and bereavement
support groups, while our cancer and lymphedema support groups served 373 people over 60 sessions.
Welcome Home
This year, Welcome Home, our daily drop-in center in Delray Beach, had 3,000 visits from the chronically mentally ill, an increase of 14 percent from the year before. More than 70 different people availed
themselves of occupational therapy, socialization, encouragement and support. They enjoyed outings to
Lion Country Safari, the Palm Beach Zoo, Morikami Museum and elsewhere. Welcome Home’s visitors
learned how to make friends, apply for work and deal with anger and isolation. In doing so, they proudly
grew in self esteem and independence. 10

In Appreciation
The mission of Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service mandates that we make our programs and services
available to all living in south Palm Beach County. Each and every gift we received in 2006-2007 supported more than 35,000 children, individuals and families who turned to us for assistance. Every contribution
helped make a tangible difference in the lives of people who need it most: the frail and infirm, children
from single-parent homes, caregivers of loved ones, the isolated elderly, the bereaved, the chronically
mentally ill, families experiencing serious financial difficulties, Holocaust survivors and so many others.
We extend our sincere thanks to the following individuals, foundations and companies who contributed to our achievements by giving so generously to help us expand our efforts. We are pleased to acknowledge you and may your generosity serve as an inspiration for others in our community to open their
hearts and offer a helping hand for many years to come.
