It could be used as a starting point for any expressive curriculum or as a focal point and culmination of any critical study.’ William Nelson, Development Officer in Art and Design for Glasgow City Council Education Department The new National 4 and 5 curriculum asks that learners become more confident in expressing their critical views of art. This workshop has been created to support the development of these skills. Within the workshop they will: • Become comfortable in the gallery and obtain relevant information via different media. • Develop skills and the vocabulary to compare and contrast artworks. • Explore what materials, ideas, and cultural context has shaped these works. • Communicate personal thoughts, feelings and ideas in response to art work. • Feel comfortable communicating their own opinions while constructively challenging their peers. • Record these discussions with new technology, such as iPads. • Write, photograph and collect information to build up a sketch book of interests and ideas. • Take the ideas and research done in the gallery and reflect it back into their own work. The learners will produce their own research and ideas sketch book and all digital documentation will be put on a disc for the teachers to take away that day. To see a video of previous learners interacting in this workshop, please visit http://vimeo.com/66148191 or scan the QR code to the left. Venue: Riverside School: Larbert High School Mathematics Faculty Class: 151 Secondary 1 pupils Subject: Maths The purpose of the trip was to allow pupils to see how the skills they learned in the classroom can be used in certain situations. Riverside assisted in the planning of the visit by offering advice and a range of resources, including rooms, learning facilitators, object handling and access to devices such as cameras. Teachers created a list of questions that could only be answered by finding a particular object then performing the correct calculation. This challenging activity allowed pupils to make the connection that numeracy skills were transferable and that maths was far from a discrete subject. The activity was innovative and pupils got a real buzz from the many fantastic items on display in the museum. The case studies described below illustrate the variety of ways schools have used Glasgow Museums’ rich collections. Venue: GMRC School: St Paul’s High School Class: 15 Secondary 3 pupils per term Subject: Archaeology Initial discussion with the class teacher led to plans for a series of archaeology workshops. After a visit to the school by a member of the Learning Team, the class undertook weekly visits to the museum over a term, handling objects and experimenting with materials. Pupils finished the course by working in small teams to create museum displays in a public space – the Pollok Civic Realm. ‘A fantastic resource on our doorstep. Pupils are engaged in a series of challenging activities which enrich a deeper understanding of the past. As well as practising skills from the past the young people are developing essential skills for the future. All whilst having a thoroughly good time.’ Teacher’s quote ‘The Riverside museum makes Maths come alive.’ ‘The transport museum was very interesting with lots of fun activities and things to see. It was a fantastic day out and the challenge added to the excitement.’ Venue: Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum School: Eastbank Academy, Glasgow Class: S3 (National 4) Pupil The topic of taxidermy may seem an unusual choice for an English class, but this teacher noted the potential for covering art and science, as well as following up on a topic which intrigued the pupils. The museum visit involved a presentation on taxidermy, handling session and gallery tour. Pupils took notes and photographs during their visit which they then used back in class to support the ‘Creation and Production’ section of their National 4 English. Venue: Riverside School: St Thomas Aquinas Secondary Class: 29 Secondary 5 / 6 pupils Subject: Higher Geography Pupils took part in a day-long trip to various Glasgow sites to study the city and the River Clyde. After a powerboat trip on the Clyde courtesy of Seaforce, pupils visited the Riverside Museum for a bespoke workshop exploring how the river influenced the growth of Glasgow and how the function of the Clyde has changed in recent years. ‘The speed boat trip and workshop at the Riverside Museum helped to contextualize the Higher case study. Pupils found the trip beneficial in aiding their understanding of the growth and regeneration of Glasgow. Definitely a trip worth booking!’ Victoria Barton, Class Teacher 'This really brought the subject of taxidermy (back) to life. They chose the subject themselves and asked if the Museum would help them to find out about it. This is an integral part of Curriculum for Excellence and focused their learning firmly in their own hands. The Museum staff went above and beyond in providing a fantastic experience for the young people; not only one which will be invaluable in their coursework, but one which will stay with them as a lasting memory of a great school outing.'
