Parts of a book
• Cover: Outside of the book
Hard or soft cover
P1, 2, 3, 4 of cover
• Spine: The book spine is the edge of a book.
This is what you see when you pull a
book from the shelves.
• Book jacket: A removable paper cover used to
protect the binding of a book.
Dust cover, jacket.
• Jacket flap: The parts of a dust jacket tucked
inside the front and rear
end of a book. This keeps the dust
jacket on the book and may contain a
synopsis of the book.
• Title page: A page at the beginning of an item
bearing the title, and usually,
though not necessarily, the author
and the data relating to publication.
• Added title page: A title page preceding or
following the t.p. chosen for
the description of the item. It
may be more general (series
t.p.) or equally general (t.p. in
another language)
• Title page verso: a page on the back of the
title page, where the
bibliographical details and the
copyright notice are printed.
- names and addresses of the publisher and printer.
- copyright information.
- ISBN
- CIP information
- information of original publication if it is translated
or adapted.
• Page and leave: A leaf or one side of a leaf, as
of a book.
• Contents page: A page near the front of a book
listing the chapters or
divisions together with the
number of the first page of
each.
• Colophon: A statement at the end of the book
giving information about one or
more of the following: title,
author(s), publisher, printer, date
of publication or printing. It may
include other information.
• Bibliography: A list of the books referred to in a
non-fiction work, usually near the end.
• Index: A more or less detailed alphabetical
listing of names, places, and topics
along with the numbers of the pages
on which they are mentioned or
discussed, usually included near the
back.
Identification numbers
• ISBN: International standard book number, a
ten- or thirteen-digit number assigned
to every book before publication.
• ISSN: International standard serial number, an
eight-digit number assigned to serial
publications such as newspapers,
magazines, annuals and series of books.

• Monograph: A detailed written study of a
single specialized subject or an
aspect of it.
• Journal: A newspaper or magazine that deals with a
particular subject or professional activity;
issued regularly.

• Encyclopaedia: A comprehensive reference
work containing articles on a
wide range of subjects or on
numerous aspects of a
particular field, usually
arranged alphabetically.

• Dictionary: A book containing a selection of the words
of a language, usually arranged
alphabetically, giving information about
their meanings, pronunciations,
etymologies, inflected forms, etc.,
expressed in either the same or another
language.
Book giving information on particular
subjects or on a particular class of words,
names, or facts, usually arranged alphabetically:
a biographical dictionary; a dictionary of
mathematics.

• Yearbook: Annual publication giving current
information and listing events or
aspects of the previous year, often
in a particular field.
• Atlas: A book of maps or charts.
A book of illustrations or diagrams on
any subject: "Atlas of surgical
operations.

• Biography: An account of a person's life
written, composed, or produced by
another person.
• Autobiography: An account of a person's life
written, composed, or
produced by the person.

• Bibliography: A list of the books of a specific
author or publisher, or on a
specific subject.

alphabetically or thematically with details
such as names, addresses, and telephone
numbers.
