In our recent Columbus Neighborhoods: South
Side documentary, we told how Appalachians
who moved to Columbus to work in local steel
mills and glass factories brought their music
with them. In the 1960s and 1970s, bluegrass
clubs thrived along Parsons Avenue on the
South Side.
–Jim Hildenbrand, Ramble Supporter
Chet DeLong, Chris Johnston and Jake
Young take turns hosting the program,
and each brings his own unique delivery
and selection of songs from his personal
library. Ramble substitute hosts include Rich
Baker and WOSU TV Content Director Brent
Davis. We’ve now incorporated a playlist
into the WOSU website, so you can visit for
details about a song that caught your ear.

Host Chris Johnston takes a request during
The Bluegrass Ramble.
Our region has a high concentration of
bluegrass music enthusiasts, but sometimes
we’re still surprised at the reach of the music.
Once we were giving a station tour to a group
of Somali immigrants, and one man asked to
see The Bluegrass Ramble studio. “I listen to the
music because the themes in the songs are the
same we sang about in Somalia: love and loss
and heartbreak and hope,” he told us.

Those clubs disappeared, but since 1980
WOSU has been a big part of the bluegrass
music scene in central Ohio. That’s the year
we launched The Bluegrass Ramble radio show.
It began on 820 AM and always had a loyal
following, despite evening reception issues
since the AM station was required by the FCC
to go to low power at sundown. Today, the
Ramble has a strong FM signal at 89.7 and an
equally strong following.

What Separates
89.7 NPR News from the Rest
New! Columbus Symphony
Orchestra Radio Broadcasts
You have many choices when it comes to
news. Here are five things that separate
89.7 NPR News from other sources of
news and information:
1.Best Signal: It’s something often taken
for granted, but our engineers spend
their days and nights making sure you,
our listeners, get the clearest, best
sounding audio possible.
2.Best Radio News Staff in Ohio:
According to the Associated Press and
Society of Professional Journalists.
3.Thoughtful Central Ohio Talk: All Sides
with Ann Fisher is the only in-depth
interview radio show in central Ohio.
Each weekday from 10am to noon,
Ann and her guests offer balanced
insight into the day’s news and
information to quench your insatiable
thirst for knowledge.
4.Most Comprehensive Radio News
Coverage: Every day, 89.7 NPR News
produces thoughtful and thoughtprovoking stories covering the issues
most important to central Ohio.
5.Vital Information in One Place: You’re
busy; especially in the morning.
Choosing 89.7 NPR News gives you all
the information you need to start your
day: international, national and central
Ohio news, frequent weather updates
and traffic reports, and the score to
last night’s game.
In “Masterworks” performances at the Ohio
& Southern Theatres during the 2013–14
season, the Columbus Symphony featured
works from the world’s greatest composers,
adding the talents of exceptional guest
musicians, vocalists, and conductors.
