The YWCA USA is the authoritative voice in our nation for promoting racial understanding, equality, justice and the social, economic, political, and personal empowerment of
women.
We are proud to share the vision of our sisters across the country, the state, and the
greater Mercer County area. We are even prouder of our accomplishments this past year.
We know "Racism Hurts Everyone" and for that reason we created the Racial Justice
Institute to promote justice, equality, and awareness. This past year we:

Observed the third annual National YWCA Day to Eliminate Racism
•
Partnered with our sister YWCA of Trenton, and hired a full time coordinator
•
Had intense board and staff training
•
Did an advertising awareness campaign
•
Ran an essay contest on racism for our After School Program children
Empowering women is also at the heart of our mission. This past year we hired a staff
person whose sole responsibility is to develop more programs for women and children.
We completed our strategic plan and feasibility study and we are:
•
Looking at increasing space to bring our Child Care Center at Valley Road
School to the main site, to have a dedicated space for our Breast Cancer
Resource Center, and to accommodate more students in our English as a
Second Language Program

Working with the YMCA to improve coordination of our services
Increasing our Bates Scholarship Fund to help more to people in need
Working on an anti-bullying theme in our After School Programs
Increasing the adaptive programs we offer for children and adults with special needs

highlights 2006-2007
The After School Program, serving six sites in
Princeton and Montgomery Townships, has an enrollment of more than 500 students whose parents value the
highest quality child care in a safe, nurturing environment. Core curricula include both a bullying-prevention
program and a multicultural appreciation program that
teach children respect and foster self-esteem.
With students from more than 30 countries at any given
time, the English as a Second Language department
easily filled its International Day festivities in April with
performances, demonstrations, and exhibits from all over
the globe. Included were traditional Costa Rican dance,
modern Argentinean tango, origami from Japan, Korean
cooking, Guatemalan needlework, Chinese calligraphy,
and even a Shakespearean monologue in Spanish!
The Child Care Center at the Valley Road School was
the beneficiary of an exciting project of the Junior League
of Greater Princeton in January. They created a Science
Room for the Center's students, as part of their ROCKETS (Raising Our Children's Knowledge by Educating
Through Science) program. The room was outfitted with
all kinds of "child-size" scientific equipment, including a
pint-sized solar system hanging from the ceiling, decorative murals with scientific themes, a special "Little Tikes
Young Explorer" computer with age-appropriate and fun
software, books to encourage the children to read about
scientific endeavors, and all kinds of puzzles.

Two wheelchairs were donated to the YWCA Princeton's Aquatic
Program in memory of Princeton resident Cindy Hoebel by her husband Bart and daughter Valerie. Mrs. Hoebel, who passed away in the
fall of 2006, faithfully attended rehabilitative swim therapy to help keep
muscle tone in her lower body, and to socialize with others in the program. Her wheelchairs now are used to transport disabled swimmers
from the dressing room to an automated chair lift into the pool.
In June, the "Paddle for
Pink" Dragon Boat Festival
was held at Mercer County
Park Marina. It was hosted
by the Machestic Dragons, a local team of breast cancer
survivors and supporters, supported by the Breast
Cancer Resource Center, who have paddled together
for six years, raising breast cancer awareness and
demonstrating that women affected by breast cancer can
lead healthy, active lives. Proceeds from the event were
donated to BCRC to support its wellness program.
In the fall of 2006, Crafters' Marketplace reinvented
itself! Prior to the show, the first-ever Patrons' Preview
Party was held at the beautiful showrooms of Miele, Inc.
Catered by chef Bobby Trigg, chef/owner of Princeton's
Ferry House restaurant, the party was a huge success.
The Marketplace itself returned to John Witherspoon
Middle School, and featured more than 140 artisans from
the East Coast. Proceeds benefited the YWCA
Princeton and its Bates Scholarship program, which
enables economically disadvantaged community members to participate in YWCA programs, at rates reduced
according to financial need.
Funding from a Princeton Area Community Foundation
grant has enabled the YWCAs of Princeton and Trenton
to collaborate and create a Racial Justice Institute to
speak as one voice to address critical social justice
issues throughout Mercer County. The Institute will provide training programs to assist organizations, corporations, community groups, and governing leaders in dismantling racially unjust issues—unacknowledged or
unconscious—hidden within their structures.

The second annual Women's Financial Conference,
held in October at the Johnson Education Center of
the D & R Greenway Land Trust, offered honest and
impartial information and advice from experts on Social
Security and retirement, the financial implications of
divorce, and how to reduce debt. Dr. Westina
Matthews Shatteen, managing director of community
business development for Merrill Lynch, gave the
keynote address to a very interested crowd of women,
one of whom said later that the conference was a "lifechanging experience."
Community-minded individuals of all ages and ethnicities
held lively and thought-provoking discussions during the
fall's Sustained Dialogue on Race Relations in New
Jersey, hosted by the YWCA Princeton and moderated by
Cynthia Mendez of Princeton Human Services.
The annual Friends of the YWCA Princeton luncheon
was held in the fall at Cherry Valley Country Club, and
featured Ellyn Spragins, author of the book What I Know
Now: Letters to My Younger Self. Answering the question "if you could send a letter back through time to your
younger self, what would the letter say," current celebrities such as Maya Angelou, Madeleine Albright, and
Macy Gray wrote to the women they once were, giving
advice and insights they wish they had had when they
were younger. Friends' chairs Kathy Bagley and Kary
Clancy organized the luncheon.
