Brief Course Description: English I 1&2 is a Common Core State Standards-based course developed around
skills-based units. Students will develop their reading analysis skills in both information and literary texts, as well

and career-ready expectations of grade 9 students as outlined in both the CCSS and the Smarter-Balanced
assessments. As grade 9 & 10 share CCSS, ELA I is intended to develop the foundation for the skills that will be
honed in ELA II.

Brief Course Description: English IH presents a survey of literature with emphasis on thematic interpretation,
analysis and evaluation. It provides an introduction to literature from Homer (The Odyssey), to Greek drama
(Oedipus Rex and Antigone), to Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet) as well as modern literature from William
Golding (Lord of the Flies) and Sandra Cisneros (House on Mango Street). Strong emphasis is placed on the
fundamentals of writing, research skills, essay structure, and MLA format. Composition of paragraphs, short
essays and timed writing is required and two research papers are required. Study and critical thinking skills are
emphasized through a coordinated curriculum that provides the basis for the next three years of a four-year Honors
English program.

Brief Course Description: English II H is designed to meet the needs of honors-level college bound students.
This is also a “Pre-A.P.” course and will develop skills students need to pass the A.P. exam. Some of these skills
include: close reading, questioning, and annotation; essay writing, timed writing, class discussion and literary
analysis. Application of literary terms and concepts started in English I H will continue with in-depth analysis of
literary genres and major thematic ideas unique to American Literature. Vocabulary development, literature circles
and SAT preparation are also components of the course. Out-of-class reading is required and students need to
commit to the reading load.

Brief Course Description: Creative Writing is an elective which will introduce students to the writer’s
workshop method of production. Students will write daily, read exemplary models, and join a writing
response group of peers. Each student will produce a portfolio or project which represents their best writing,
due at the end of each semester. Students will practice writing of different genres as well as reviewing the
principles of poetry, fiction and non-fiction

Brief Course Description: Expository Reading and Writing is designed to prepare students for college-level
English and is aligned with the California English-Language Arts Content Standards. The course assignments
emphasize the in-depth study of expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing. The course is
designed to promote college-readiness via critical reading and analyses of non-fiction texts, as well as
addressing writing problems.

Brief Course Description: This is Advanced Placement English Language and Composition for accelerated
students. It offers college level curriculum, in-depth study, and extensive readings. The course emphasizes the
study of rhetoric and analysis of American literature through literary works such as The Scarlet Letter, The
Crucible, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Grapes of Wrath,
The Great Gatsby, Death of a Salesman, Slaughterhouse Five, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Our Town.
Students complete research projects and papers each semester for the purpose of passing the Language and
Composition AP exam and meeting the California English-language Arts Content Standards.

Brief Course Description: A.P. English Literature and Composition offers well-prepared and motivated students
an opportunity to do college-level work. One of the goals, of course, is to prepare students for the A.P. exam in
May, and it is anticipated that students in the class will take the exam. The course includes in-depth analysis of a
small number of classic works of all genres and extensive out-of-class reading. Composition entails extensive
writing of a critical/analytical nature, some of which will be featured in a portfolio produced for each semester.
Excellent attendance is a necessity.

Brief Course Description: This course teaches the fundamentals of producing a student newspaper, including
writing and technological skills. The class is responsible for producing the school newspaper, The Brave Times, so
students must apply and be accepted in order to take this class (instructor approval).

Brief Course Description: Yearbook students will learn the skills of effective written, verbal and visual
communication. They will learn terms and procedures for yearbook planning, marketing, production, printing as
well as the legal issues of publishing. They will become adept at using the internet based design program Yeartech
Online, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel on PC computer platform. The production of the
Yearbook is a costly enterprise and each student will take responsibility in that project in a comprehensive way.
This is a student-created publication and the adviser will play as minimal a role as possible in the actual creation of
the book.

Brief Course Description: The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that
students learned in the middle grades. The critical areas, organized into units, deepen and extend understanding of
linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomena, and in part by applying linear models to
data that exhibit a linear trend. Integrated Math I uses properties and theorems involving congruent figures to deepen
and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The final unit in this course ties together the
algebraic and geometric ideas studied. The Mathematical Practice standards apply throughout, and together with the
content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes
use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

Brief Course Description: This course covers everything in the Calculus AB topic outline as it appears in the AP
Calculus Course Description including functions, graphs, and limits; derivatives; integrals; and polynomial
approximations and series. Students have the opportunity to work with functions presented in a variety of ways:
graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally, and how these methods are interrelated. This course gives students a
strong foundation to be successful in future mathematics and science classes.

Brief Course Description: This is an advanced placement course for students who have completed AP Calculus AB and
have received a passing score on the AP Examination. This course consists of reviewing the concepts from AP Calculus
AB and additional topics required for the Calculus BC Examination. It is expected that students who take AP Calculus
BC will take the AP examination in order to obtain college credit for a year of Single Variable Calculus.

Brief Course Description: Students will study descriptive and inferential statistics including measures of central
tendency, probability of discrete and random variables, z-scores, t-test and chi square measures. Students will be
study various distributions, including normal, binomial and geometric. Significant time will be dedicated to
experiment and study as well as introduction to formal inference.

Brief Course Description: Students will study advanced algebra concepts such as linear systems (with matrices),
linear programming and function theorems and procedures for polynomial, quadratic, rational, exponential and
logarithmic functions (including mathematics of finance, exponential growth and decay). Second semester focus will
shift to test preparation for the ELM (Entrance Level Mathematics), analytical geometry, probability, along with an
introduction to statistics and the calculus. The course content is similar to an entry-level college algebra course and
will prepare students for general education college mathematics courses

curriculum.

Brief Course Description: Biology is a lab-based course, which incorporates current scientific topics and issues,

Brief Course Description: Biology I 1&2H incorporates current scientific topics and issues, along with

origins, organization, reproduction, genetics, growth, development, evolution, and ecology of living organisms.
The instruction is aligned with, but not limited to, the Biology California Science Content Standards and State
Testing and Reporting (STAR) program. This course is taught using higher critical thinking skills, a wider range
of topics, and an accelerated rate of learning than Biology I 1&2 P.

Brief Course Description: This one-year course is designed to provide students with an overview of chemistry
principles and lab skills to prepare those that may be interested in taking Advanced Placement Chemistry. The

analysis of labs. Application of Chemistry and a focus on lab skills at an accelerated pace will be an integral part

Brief Course Description: The goal of Environmental Science is to introduce students to the natural world;
identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human made; evaluate the relative risks associated
with these problems; and examine solutions using activities, supplemental reading, group discussion, and a few
relevant lab experiences. This course is designed to increase student awareness of the environment through natural
field experiences with data collection, exposure to interpretive/restoration/conservation projects, and access to
public utility outreach programs focused on the environment. The course forces the student to examine their own

Brief Course Description: The goal of Geology is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and
methods required to understand physical and historical geology. Physical geology examines the materials that
comprise the Earth and processes that operate beneath and upon its surface. Historical geology deals with the
origin of the Earth and its development through time. Major topics include: plate tectonics, geologic structures
such as faults and folds, properties of minerals and rocks, three major rock types, weathering and soil, mountain
building, and geologic time.

Brief Course Description: This is a one-year introductory physical science course covering the earth science,
physical science and chemistry standards as outlined in the California Science Content Standards. In addition to
providing students a strong foundation in the fundamentals of physical science, this course will also emphasize
measurement, unit analysis, data analysis and computational skills necessary for students to be successful
subsequent chemistry and physics classes. Completion of this course will satisfy the one-year physical science

Brief Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the principles of
economics and involves a quarter of microeconomics and a quarter of macroeconomics. It will combine theoretical

their understanding of the economic problems and institutions of the nation and the world in which they live.
Students will better understand individual decisions, national economic problems and international economic
concerns. Emphasis will be on the knowledge necessary to make well-reasoned decisions as a citizen in a global

Brief Course Description: American Government is a one-semester course designed to expand the student’s
knowledge and understanding of the American political system. The course is the culmination of the civic literacy
strand, preparing students to vote, understand the responsibilities of citizenship and participate actively as effective
decision makers and informed citizens. Students will analyze the history and changing interpretation of the
Constitution, Bill of Rights and the current state of the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches of
government. Students will also analyze the relationships among federal, state and local governments, with
particular attention paid to important historical documents such as the Federalist Papers. Students will also
compare different systems of government in the world today.

Brief Course Description: The U.S. History course is aligned with the California State Standards. The course
begins with a review of the period from colonization through Reconstruction. The core of the class includes the
major themes from the post-Civil War period, including the Industrial Revolution, the Gilded Age, U.S.
imperialism, the Progressive Era, World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, Civil Rights
Era, and recent events. Attention is given to the unique social, political and economic make-up of the United
States, as well as the events themselves. Study skills will include note-taking, and reading for content. The students
will be required to demonstrate critical thinking and writing skills.

Brief Course Description: This course is based on a global perspective of the world and human interactions from
8000 BCE to present day. Students consider multiple accounts of events in order to understand international

analytical abilities and critical thinking skills in order to understand historical and geographical context, make
comparisons across cultures, use documents and other primary sources, and recognize and discuss different

Brief Course Description: This course explores the elements of design (line, shape, value, color, form, texture, and
space), and introduces the principles of design (variety, emphasis, balance, rhythm, movement, unity, proportion/scale).
Areas of study include drawing, painting, collage, and other techniques. Projects will be 2-D and 3-D with an emphasis
on mastering technical skills using a variety of media (pencil, charcoal, colored pencil, pen and ink, etc.). Students will

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING

Students will learn to create programs using Java and Visual Basic. Java is one of the major Computer
Programming Languages used on the Internet today and Visual Basic is a great starting point for object oriented

Brief Course Description: This is an advanced placement level course in computer Science with an emphasis on
Java and Windows based programming. Topics include user interface, creating objects and writing programming
code. Students will create programs and be able to understand decision structures and debugging processes.
They will also plan, develop and test programs in an environment that is created by the user while understanding
tools that enable processing of user input.

Wood Technology I

Brief Course Description: This course is an introduction to wood technology and projects building to stress the
safe use of hand tools, portable power tools and basic production machines. Assembly and finishing techniques will
also be included.

Wood Technology II
PREREQUISITES: A "C" or better in Wood Technology I/or teacher approval
Brief Course Description: Wood II will further develop knowledge and techniques taught in Wood I. This course
will provide an opportunity for personal achievement in the construction of projects with an emphasis on furniture.
The course will enhance the student's ability to work safely with power tools. Students will also explore wood-related
occupations.

Brief Course Description: Wood III/IV will further develop knowledge and techniques taught in Wood I and II.

on cabinetmaking. The course will enhance the student’s ability with power tools. Upon completion students will
be prepared for entry level employment in the woodworking industry.

Brief Course Description: Students will be prepared for a successful high school career and admission to
college by learning the skills necessary to succeed both academically and socially. They will become proficient in
computer use, in research techniques—both on the computer and in the library. They will explore careers and learn
time management, organizational skills, test-taking skills, basic geography, and AVID strategies. Students will
learn a variety of test-taking skills. The class will also support all core subjects, particularly subjects in the Smaller
Learning Communities ninth-grade houses: math, English, and science. Curriculum will emphasize college
preparation through field trips, guest speakers, and research projects.

Brief Course Description: AVID is a course that promotes student success in rigorous college prep curriculum.
