Lesson Plan Graded Reader: Dracula
Text: Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Oxford Bookworms Library), Stage 2 (700 headwords)
Time plan: 7 weeks, 1 per week (introduction + 6 chapters)
Aims: -
introduce literature
begin to discuss literary topics
learn to work independently
understand texts, learn to read for understanding, not word-to-word translations
Presentations
The class will form 6 groups; each week, one group will present a chapter; presentations will
not take longer than 5 minutes; additionally, they will prepare ‘Verständnisfragen’ (1-2) to be
distributed to the class and solved by the class after the presentation. They should also bring
to class 2-3 aspects they found interesting or disturbing in order to discuss them in class.
However, in any case the teacher will have her own questions ready in case discussions stall.
Vocabulary
I don’t want to put too much focus on vocabulary to encourage students to read the text for
understanding, instead on concentrating on translations of every single word. However, at the
beginning of this lesson-sequence, students will be told that they will have to keep a list of
their own vocabulary, i.e. they are required to use a dictionary to find out words they don’t
know while reading, and which they need to understand the text.
