OAKLAND UNIVERSITY SECONDARY CERTIFICATION RENEWAL Additional: New Reading Requirement: Implementation of Senate Bill 327 Effective July 1, 2009 satisfactory completion of a three-credit course of study with appropriate field experiences in the diagnosis and remediation of reading disabilities and differentiated instruction is required for ALL teachers renewing their provisional certificate. You can meet this requirement by taking RDG 510 Inquiry-Based Literacy Instruction at Oakland University. First Time Provisional Certificate Renewal: Requirements: Completion of 9 credits of a planned program from a State approved teacher preparation program. For planned programs, refer to Options 1-4 below. Second Time Provisional Certificate Renewal: Requirements: Completion of 18 semester hours in a planned program from a State approved teacher preparation program. For planned programs, refer to Options 1-4 below. First time obtaining a Professional Education Certificate: Requirements: 1. Completion of 18 semester hours in a planned program from an approved Michigan teacher education institution after issuance of the provisional certificate or completion of a master’s degree at any time. Please refer to Options 2, 3, and 4 from below for more information. As an alternative, students may choose to add a major/minor endorsement from a planned program, refer to Option 1 from below. Oakland University will accept 6 to 9 credits from another institution toward certification requirements upon adviser approval. 2. Completion of the reading requirement. Secondary teachers applying for a Professional Education Certificate must complete the three-credit requirement in methods of teaching reading courses. If you have not completed this three-credit requirement, you must take RDG 538 as part of your planned program. If you are not sure if you have met the reading requirement, please contact the Education Advising Office at (248) 3704182 for an appointment. Please bring unofficial transcripts with you. 3. Three years of satisfactory teaching experience within the grade level and subject area of your teaching certificate. The teaching experience must be completed after the issuance of your initial provisional certificate. One hundred fifty substitute days equals 1 year of experience. If you have not taught the requisite 3 years, you may renew your Provisional Certificate upon completion of the first 9 credits of the 18 semester hour planned program. Professional Education Certificate Renewal: Requirements: 6 semester hours of appropriate course work from an accredited Michigan higher education institution (including accredited community colleges) or out-of-state or university, with a state approved teacher preparation program or the equivalent in State Board-Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs) or a combination of the two. The SB-CEU equivalent to six semester hours is 18 SB-CEUs or three SB-CEUs are equivalent to one semester credit hour.
