SECONDARY CERTIFICATION RENEWAL
Additional: New Reading Requirement: Implementation of Senate Bill 327
Effective July 1, 2009 satisfactory completion of a three-credit course of study with appropriate field experiences in
the diagnosis and remediation of reading disabilities and differentiated instruction is required for ALL teachers
renewing their provisional certificate. You can meet this requirement by taking RDG 510 Inquiry-Based Literacy
Instruction at Oakland University.
First Time Provisional Certificate Renewal:
Requirements: Completion of 9 credits of a planned program from a State approved teacher preparation program.
For planned programs, refer to Options 1-4 below.
Second Time Provisional Certificate Renewal:
Requirements: Completion of 18 semester hours in a planned program from a State approved teacher preparation
program. For planned programs, refer to Options 1-4 below.
First time obtaining a Professional Education Certificate:
Requirements:
1. Completion of 18 semester hours in a planned program from an approved Michigan teacher education
institution after issuance of the provisional certificate or completion of a master’s degree at any time.
Please refer to Options 2, 3, and 4 from below for more information.
As an alternative, students may choose to add a major/minor endorsement from a planned program, refer to
Option 1 from below. Oakland University will accept 6 to 9 credits from another institution toward
certification requirements upon adviser approval.
2. Completion of the reading requirement. Secondary teachers applying for a Professional Education Certificate
must complete the three-credit requirement in methods of teaching reading courses. If you have not
completed this three-credit requirement, you must take RDG 538 as part of your planned program. If you are
not sure if you have met the reading requirement, please contact the Education Advising Office at (248) 3704182 for an appointment. Please bring unofficial transcripts with you.
3. Three years of satisfactory teaching experience within the grade level and subject area of your teaching
certificate. The teaching experience must be completed after the issuance of your initial provisional
certificate. One hundred fifty substitute days equals 1 year of experience. If you have not taught the requisite
3 years, you may renew your Provisional Certificate upon completion of the first 9 credits of the 18 semester
hour planned program.
Professional Education Certificate Renewal:
Requirements: 6 semester hours of appropriate course work from an accredited Michigan higher education
institution (including accredited community colleges) or out-of-state or university, with a state approved teacher
preparation program or the equivalent in State Board-Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs) or a combination of the
two. The SB-CEU equivalent to six semester hours is 18 SB-CEUs or three SB-CEUs are equivalent to one semester
credit hour. Renewal applications for the professional education certificate are available in local superintendent
offices, the Michigan Department of Education Office of Professional Preparation Services, online @
