ORIENTATION SCHEDULE –Fall 2011 (Final)
August 15-19
We will be meeting Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4pm – 9pm in HM 112. There is no orientation on
Wednesday. On Friday, there will be a full program meeting from 9:00-2:00 in HM 300. Meals will be provided at all
orientation sessions.
You can access orientation materials from the Efiles:

 Select 602 from the pull-down course menu and press “Search”
 Download the following:
o Materials for Unit 1 (Select either TR or MWF schedule)

Monday, 8/15
To prepare
 Read all of the material listed on the schedule for first two weeks of class, instructions for the first assignment,
and the course syllabus (available on Efiles)
 Read Green, “Building a Better Teacher” (on Efiles)
Agenda: 4pm – 6pm
 Brief Introductions
 Explanation of Zone of Proximal Development, Scaffolding, and Collaborative Learning
 Goals for 101 & Paul-Elder Critical Thinking
 Discuss the Common Syllabus (ADCs)
 Model how to teach “Argument an Introduction” (Mike Sobiech)
6pm – 9pm
 Dinner—over dinner you will be asked to introduce yourself to 3 people you don’t already know
 Discuss Green’s “Building a Better Teacher” (Barrie Meadows)
 Finish Sobiech’s modeling
 Model how to teach “The Core of an Argument” (Caroline Wilkinson)
Tuesday, 8/16
To prepare
 Read all of the materials associated with unit 1
Agenda: 4pm – 6pm
 Finish Wilkinson’s modeling
 Go over syllabus and possible adjustments you might make to the policies
 Model how to teach “Using Evidence Effectively” (Barrie Meadows)
6pm -9pm
 Dinner—over dinner you will be asked to introduce yourself to 3 people you don’t already know
 Finish Meadows’ modeling
 Hands-on Blackboard session (Dual credit teachers may leave if they wish)
Wednesday – no orientation. Work on syllabus.
Thursday, 8/18

 Read Charney, “Teaching Writing as Process”
 Read Sommers, “Responding to Student Writing “
 Read Delpit, “The Silenced Dialogue “

 Introduction to Reflective Practice
 Discuss theories of process and the importance of teaching the writing process
 Discuss responding to student writing (Matt Wiles)
 Model how to teach sample essays (Matt Wiles)

 Finish Wiles’ modeling
 If time, discuss Delpit’s “The Silenced Dialogue” and implications for working with students (Sobiech)
 Discuss program policies and university resources (Dual credit teachers may leave if they wish)
