Year 4 Religious Studies Summer Exam Guide Your religious studies exam will last 45 minutes in total. You will be asked to answer a series of questions about the topics we have covered this year. Remember to look at the marks allocated for each question as this will give you an idea of the amount of detail and information you are expected to write. Read through the list of topics below, and then revise the relevant sections in your class books. Remember to be POSITIVE! You can do it! We have studied three Religions this year- Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism. You need to know the place of worship, symbols and Holy Books for each Religion. Judaism 1) This is one of the oldest religions and began 4000 years ago. 2) The Jews call God ‘Adonai’ and worship in a Synagogue, where they listen to stories and pray. 3) The Holy Book is known as the Torah 4) The Jews believe that God gave Moses a set of rules, which have to be obeyed, and are called the Ten Commandments. 5) There are two easily recognisable symbols, which are the Menorah and The Star of David. The Star of David This is a star with six points and is also known as the Shield of David. Menorah The Menorah is a candlestick with seven branches. Buddhism 1) Buddhism began in India and Buddhists follow the teachings of Siddattha Gotama, who is called the Buddha. 2) Many Buddhists worship at home. They may also worship in temples. 3) The most important teachings of Buddhism are called Tipitaka, which means ‘three baskets’. 4) The Noble Eightfold Path is the way Biddhists should live their lives. The Eight parts are: a) Right viewpoint (looking at things in the right way). b) Right thought (using your mind in the right way). c) Right speech (making sure that words do not hurt anyone). d) Right action (not doing wrong things). e) Right living (not harming others). f) Right effort (working hard to do good). g) Right awareness (controlling the mind to look at things in the right way). h) Right concentration (using meditation to help concentration). This is the symbol of Buddhism and is a wheel with eight spokes. This reminds people that the Buddha taught about eights ways of living. Hindus worship in temples, and at shrines in their homes. The oldest Hindu Holy Books are called the Vedas. About 800 million people in India are Hindus. This is more than 80% of the people in India.
