The HP Deskjet 5650 series incorporates new software and hardware features that expand printing options and help simplify the overall printing experience. Flexible border printing The Deskjet 5650 series offers the flexibility to print photos with or without borders. Borderless printing lets you print to the paper’s edge on all four sides of standard-size photo and brochure papers up to 8.5 x 11 inches for full-bleed digital photo prints—no special photo paper with tear-off tabs or strips is required. (See Appendix D for borderless media sizes). Bordered and borderless printing options are easily accessible from the HP Deskjet 5600 series printer software. To print a borderless photo, open the Print Properties dialog box, click on the Paper/Quality tab and select a borderless paper size from the Size is menu. Or, click on the Borderless Photo box on the Paper/Quality tab. Checking this box changes the paper in the Size is menu to the borderless equivalent of whatever size has already been selected. The image size is automatically increased to fill the selected paper size. A Borderless Auto Fit option automatically matches your borderless photo to the selected paper size. The feature is available only if a borderless paper size is selected. Simply check the box next to Borderless Auto Fit (after selecting a borderless paper size). The printer will automatically size the borderless photo to fit the selected paper type, including orientation changes if needed. New quick sets A new quick set feature simplifies printing tasks by providing a shortcut to various print settings. You can choose from a list of print settings from the Print Task Quick Sets menu on the Paper/Quality tab, or create your own customized print settings from any tab in the Print Properties dialog box. Quick Sets allow you to customize print settings for most common print tasks, eliminating the need to make selections each time you print. Minimize margins A new Minimize Margins feature enables printing close to the edge of the paper. Simply specify the printing margins you want to use in your operating system or application software page-setup menu; the printer automatically adjusts printing margins. HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 5 Print quality selector button The Deskjet 5650 series offers two methods for selecting print quality settings: the printer software and a new Print quality Selector button. The Print Quality Selector button makes it easy to select print quality settings directly from the front panel. You must first ensure that the Print Quality Selector button is enabled from the printer software in order to use this feature: Open the Print Properties dialog box. Select the Paper/Quality tab. Select Use Print Quality Selector from the Print Quality menu. Click OK. After verifying that the Print Quality Selector is enabled from the printer software, simply press the Print Quality Selector button on the front panel to select either: FastNormal, Normal, or Best print settings. Print Quality Selector icons on the front panel light up or flash to indicate the selected print quality setting. To change a selection, simply push the button until the icon representing the print Print Quality Selector button quality you want to use appears lit. Fast Normal icon Once a selection is made, all print jobs will print in the selected mode until you select a new print quality setting. If no selection is made, the printer automatically defaults to Normal mode. The print quality setting cannot be changed, once a document begins printing. If a new print quality setting is selected, the setting will be applied to the next print job. Note: When an icon is lit, it indicates the selected print setting. If an icon is lit and another icon flashes, the illuminated icon indicates the print setting selected for the current print job. The flashing icon indicates the setting selected for the next print job. Print Quality Selector button Normal icon The Print Quality Selector button offers quick, convenient control over print quality settings. With the ability to change print settings directly from the front panel, users will be less apt to inadvertently print a job with an inappropriate print setting, and thereby avoid mistakes that can waste time and paper. Print Quality Selector button Best icon Print quality settings can also be selected in the printer software from the Print Quality menu on the Paper/Quality tab. Two print settings, FastDraft and Maximum dpi, can only be HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 6 selected from the printer software (see the section on selecting print settings on page 17). HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 7 Booklet printing The Deskjet 5600 series printer software has a new Booklet Layout feature that makes it easy to produce booklets for binding. The Booklet Layout feature automatically arranges and resizes the pages of a document so that when the document is folded into a booklet, the page order is correct. The Booklet Layout menu lists various options for booklet binding. The menu is accessible from the Finishing tab in the Print Properties dialog box. Watermarks The Deskjet 5600 series printer software has a watermark feature for applying a word or short phrase to the first page or all pages of a document. You can select an existing watermark from a list of options under the Watermark menu, such as CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT, or create your own watermark. The font, size, color, and angle of the word or phrase may all be adjusted from the Watermarks menu on the Effects tab in the Print Properties dialog box. HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 8 Robust paper handling The HP Deskjet 5650 series supports a wide variety of media, from plain, inkjet and photo papers to greeting card, transparency and brochure papers. The HP Two-Sided Printing Accessory and optional 250-sheet plain paper tray may be included with your evaluation unit. If so, we encourage you to give them a try. Please follow the setup instructions in the Setup Poster and Quick Tip Guide included with your evaluation package. Automatic two-sided printing The Deskjet 5652 offers efficient paper handling with a two-sided printing accessory for completely automatic two-sided printing. The HP Two-Sided Printing Accessory (C8955A) is available for purchase separately, for use with the Deskjet 5650 printer. The HP Two-Sided Printing Accessory makes it easy to print two-sided documents, from lengthy reports to newsletters, brochures, and greeting cards. The printer driver and module work together to print the first side of a page, reverse the page back into the module, and then print the second side of the page, for completely automatic two-sided printing. To select automatic two-sided printing, click on the Finishing tab from the Print Properties dialog box. Select Print on Both Sides and then select Automatic. Optional 250-sheet plain paper tray The Deskjet 5650 series includes a large capacity,150sheet input paper tray that accommodates a variety of media. An optional 250-sheet plain paper tray increases total capacity up to 400 sheets. The HP 250-Sheet Plain Paper Tray (Q3447A) is available for purchase separately, for use with the Deskjet 5650 and Deskjet 5652 printers. The high-capacity, optional paper tray saves time, by requiring fewer interventions to re-stock the paper trays. Home and office professionals can keep the 250-sheet paper tray filled with plain office paper and use the main input tray for letterhead, transparencies, labels or other media. This eliminates the need to stop and change paper when printing transparencies for presentations, letters for special mailings, or photo printing. NEW! calibrate color option A new feature in the printer Toolbox allows customers to manually calibrate the HP 57 tri-color and HP 58 photo cartridges. When Calibrate Color is selected, the printer produces a page with rows of colored boxes. Simply choose the box that best blends into the background by making your selection on-screen. The Calibrate Color option allows you to fine-tune printing according to individual preferences. HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 13 HP digital photography options The Deskjet 5650 series delivers true-to-life photo quality with HP digital photography options that automatically improve the quality of digital photographs by intelligently analyzing source images and applying appropriate image enhancements. New Red Eye Removal—A new automatic red eye removal option is used to correct the appearance of “red eye”, a common undesirable image attribute seen in flash-lit photographs. The red eye removal feature is uniquely applied on a case-bycase basis. For this reason, the default is set to Off in the printer software. You will need to turn the feature to On from the hp Digital Photography Options screen, to enable it for images that contain red eye. Note: The HP Photo & Imaging software included with the printer also has a red eye removal feature. If you want to manually remove red eyes from your images and see a preview of how the feature will alter the appearance of the image before you print, you may want to use the red eye removal option in the Photo & Imaging software. Contrast Enhancement—Contrast Enhancement automatically brightens images that appear dark or hazy, as a result of poor lighting conditions. Contrast Enhancement intelligently analyzes image characteristics and applies appropriate tone correction to deliver optimal image quality and clarity. Digital Flash—Digital Flash intelligently analyzes source images and applies image enhancement algorithms to improve image detail in dark, shadow areas or areas that appear too light or over exposed. SmartFocus—HP SmartFocus algorithms automatically enhance image quality and clarity in lowresolution sources such as images printed from the Internet, CD-ROM and multimedia applications. Sharpness—HP’s Sharpness image enhancement feature analyzes source files and sharpens image detail to increase the quality of digital photos. Detail areas appear sharper and crisper for realistic, photo-quality output. Smoothing—HP’s Smoothing image enhancement feature gives digital images a smoother, more uniform appearance for realistic, true-to-life photo quality. HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 14 Existing HP technologies The Deskjet 5650 series continues the trend of offering full-featured HP printing conveniences, with a host of HP technologies featured with its predecessor, the Deskjet 5550 series. Ink backup mode The Deskjet 5650 has an ink backup printing mode that allows you to complete a print job even when one of the print cartridges runs out of ink, by printing with the remaining print cartridge. The ink backup mode automatically engages when a print cartridge is removed from the printer. When backup printing is completed with the color print cartridge, black output will print in process black (black created by the combination of inks in the color cartridge). Images and color business graphics will print in color. When backup printing is completed with the black or photo cartridge, output will print in grayscale (shades of gray). The ink backup mode is offered as a convenience feature—allowing you to print notes, handouts, or a presentation moments before a meeting, complete a project late at night, or any time a trip to the store for new supplies is not convenient. For optimal print quality and performance, we recommend printing with two print cartridges. Print screen utility The Deskjet 5650 has a print screen utility that makes it easy to print screen captures simply by activating the print-screen button on your computer keyboard. The print screen utility offers numerous ways to print simply and directly, such as printing information from web pages, online purchases, or one or more slides from a presentation during an online meeting. The print screen utility is useful for printing screen content from applications that lack printing functions or for capturing onscreen messages for use when seeking technical assistance. There’s no need to capture the screen content first and copy and paste it into an application prior to printing. The print screen utility automatically installs when you install the HP Deskjet 5600 series software. You can activate the feature and select options for using print screen from your Windows operating system software. Please refer to the Reference guide included with your printer for details. Automatic paper-type sensing The Deskjet 5650 is the third Deskjet platform to offer HP’s automatic paper-type sensing convenience feature. The primary benefit of automatic paper-type sensing is the elimination of the need to change paper type and print quality settings in the driver when special media is used. As a result, customers who leave their printer in automatic media sensing mode will experience exceptional print quality across all paper types. Here’s how it works. A small optical sensor detects the type of paper in the paper tray—plain, photo, inkjet or transparency—and then selects the appropriate print setting and color map for the best output on most popular paper types. For those who prefer to manually select settings, complete control to customize media settings is as easy as always. (Please see page 16 to manually select print settings during speed testing.) HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 15 Print cancel button The Deskjet 5650 has a one-touch print cancel button on the front panel—another convenience feature offered in numerous HP inkjet printers. To terminate a print job, simply press the print cancel button to immediately halt printing. The ability to quickly cancel an unwanted print job saves time, ink and paper. High-speed draft mode The Deskjet 5650 has a special Plain Paper/FastDraft mode for printing multiple-page documents. The high-speed FastDraft mode delivers up to 21 pages per minute in black and up to 15 pages per minute in color (up to 4-ink color printing). The FastDraft mode uses a unique ‘continuous pick’ method to advance paper through the printer. This enables the Deskjet 5650 to deliver exceptionally fast print speeds for multiple page text and color graphics documents. High Performance Architecture The Deskjet 5650 printer features HP’s High Performance Architecture™—a revolutionary approach to inkjet printing that improves performance with faster print speeds, print quality enhancements and increased options for connectivity. High Performance Architecture efficiently divides image processing between the host computer’s processor and that of the printer. Files are sent to the printer in a highly compressed format. Smaller, highly compressed print files are transferred more quickly, so performance increases. HP’s exclusive architecture enables the printer’s dedicated 96 Mhz processor to perform tasks faster and with greater efficiency than the general purpose processors in host computers. Customer benefits of High Performance Architecture: Speed improvements Better throughput with compressed RGB data Faster return to application Enables automatic paper-type sensing Printer performs color mapping, half-toning and K-fortification No need to re-render data after media selection No need for bi-directional communications Enables PQ enhancements due to improved throughput Improved network performance HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 16 Installation and setup Printer setup Please refer to the Setup Poster included with your evaluation unit for instructions on installing the HP Deskjet 5600 series software, setting up the HP Deskjet 5650, loading paper, and installing the print cartridges. For installation instructions for the optional HP Two-Sided Printing Accessory, see the Setup Poster. For details on the optional HP 250-Sheet Plain Paper Tray, see the Quick Tip Guide. Software (driver) installation The Deskjet 5650 features a streamlined, easy-to-install printer driver for use with all installations, including network installation. Be sure to install the HP Deskjet 5600 series software on your Windows or Macintosh computer according to the instructions on the Setup Poster before connecting the printer to your computer. Supplies The Deskjet 5650 offers customers the option to choose between standard four-ink and optional six-ink color printing. The HP 56 black print cartridge (C6656A) and the HP 57 tri-color print cartridge (C6657A), included in the box with the printer, provide crisp black text and brilliant color for four-ink color printing. Optional six-ink color printing, available with the separate purchase of the HP 58 photo print cartridge (C6658A) (not included), provides impressive photo quality for digital photo prints. Customers simply remove the black cartridge and insert the photo cartridge for six-ink color printing using the color and photo cartridges. Automatic alignment An optical sensor in the Deskjet 5650 printer automatically calibrates new print cartridges. After you have completed the installation procedure, the printer will automatically print a calibration page to ensure accurate alignment of the print cartridges. If no paper, or an inappropriate paper (such as transparency or photo paper) is in the in-tray, the printer will wait until an appropriate paper (plain paper), is present to print the calibration page. Selecting paper type/print settings by turning off the automatic paper type sensor The Deskjet 5650 has an automatic paper-type sensor that detects the type of paper in the in-tray for optimal print quality results, automatically. For fair and accurate comparison with competitive products, we recommend testing with the automatic paper-type sensor turned off when conducting speed trials. Automatic paper-type sensing may add several seconds to the start of a print job. Automatic is the default setting in the Type is menu. To turn off the automatic paper-type sensor, open the Print Properties dialog box and click the Paper/Quality tab. Select the specific type of paper you are using from the Type is menu. If you change paper types during your evaluation, be sure to select the new paper from the menu. HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 17 Evaluating the HP Deskjet 5650 color inkjet printer General evaluation guidelines Test according to your reader’s needs—Consider the type of document you are printing and the appropriateness of the mode to the application. For example, home and office users commonly print text and mixed text color graphics documents in normal mode. Assess the complete document—Make sure the entire file prints correctly. If printing is interrupted or the printer is bumped or jarred during printing, repeat the test. Make ‘apples-to-apples’ comparisons—Print modes and how they are designated vary widely from one manufacturer to another. When comparing output from more than one printer, it is important to compare similar modes in printers to ensure a fair and accurate comparison. Consider print speed and quality— The relationship between print speed and print quality is an important consideration in evaluating a printer’s overall performance. Test for each feature then consider them together: Is the output quality acceptable at faster print speeds? Does getting great print quality mean sacrifices in print speed? Selecting print settings Note: If you are using the Print Quality Selector button, first verify that the Print Quality Selector button is enabled from the printer software (see page 6 for details). FastNormal Normal The Deskjet 5650 series offers print settings in FastDraft (prints at the fastest printing speed); FastNormal (prints faster than Normal at a higher print quality than FastDraft); Normal (prints faster than Best at a higher quality than FastNormal); Best (provides high quality printing); and Maximum dpi (see Photo Quality Test Modes below). For optimal text/graphics print quality Press the Print Quality Selector button on the front panel until the Best icon is lit. Press the Print Quality Selector button on the front panel until the Best icon is lit. Select the specific type of photo paper you are using from the Type is menu on the Paper/Quality tab. Photo quality test modes—The Deskjet 5650 has a Maximum dpi setting that produces output of up to 4800 x 1200-optimized dpi with 1200-input dpi. The 4800-optimized dpi mode may be used for printing source images greater than 600 dpi. If you include a test in the Maximum dpi mode, use HP Premium Plus Photo Paper and compare the output from this mode with output from the printer’s Best mode using the PhotoREt setting. HP PhotoREt color layering technology requires less data processing to create accurate, photo-quality color, so printing is faster. Note: The Maximum dpi setting is available only from the Print Quality menu on the Paper/Quality tab; it HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 18 cannot be selected from the printer’s front panel. HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 19 Appendix A: Evaluating quality General guidelines Print quality is more than just a function of how many dots (dpi) the printer places on a page. The number of colors a printer produces, text quality, and edge enhancements are all indicators of print quality. When testing for print quality: Use files that are representative of those home and business users will print. Print the same files on all units, using the most consistent quality settings. Use more than one application to ensure that software/driver conflicts do not affect print quality. Test on media that home and business users will use most frequently with the Deskjet 5650, for example, plain paper and photo papers When testing on special media (coated, photo or transparency), use the manufacturer’s recommended media. Test in the same physical environment. Humidity and temperature can affect output. Consider standards compatibility (sRGB, Adobe RGB). Versatile four-ink printing Optional six-ink printing with HP PhotoREt IV color layering technology The Deskjet 5650 comes standard with four-ink printing (prints with black and tri-color cartridges for versatile everyday printing of text, images and graphics and the best combination of print speed and quality). The Deskjet 5650 features optional six-ink color printing6 for true-to-life photo quality using the tri-color and photo cartridges (see the section on HP PhotoREt IV color layering technology for details). Evaluating four-ink printing: Evaluating six-ink photo printing: Load the in-tray with the appropriate paper for the document you are printing, e.g., plain, inkjet, transparency). Remove the HP 58 photo cartridge and insert the HP 56 black inkjet print cartridge according to the instructions on the Setup Poster. Print a variety of documents with text and mixed text/graphics/images. Evaluate the results (see the sections on evaluating text print quality and graphics print quality). Install the HP 58 photo inkjet print cartridge and the HP 57 tri-color inkjet print cartridge included with your evaluation unit according to the instructions on the Setup Poster. Load the in-tray with plain paper and print a calibration page. Then load the in-tray with HP Premium Plus Photo Paper. Print photos in a variety of sizes, with and without borders. Evaluate the results (see Evaluating image print quality). Six-ink photo printing available with separate purchase of the HP 58 photo inkjet print cartridge (C6658A); not included. 6 HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 20 Evaluating text print quality Evaluating graphics print quality Evaluating image print quality Text-only sample documents should include the following elements: Color graphics samples should include illustrations, charts, graphs, or elements with: Photo-quality image samples should provide proper: A variety of common typefaces (Times Roman™, Helvetica™, Courier) Faces in italic and bold variations Varying point sizes Color fonts in a variety of faces and sizes Print text-only sample documents on each supported media type (plain, inkjet, etc.). Evaluate the output for each of the following characteristics: Images should be clear and sharp. Check for “banding”—there should be no bands across images or graphics. Look for graininess or visibility of dots. Skin tones should look natural. Images should look natural and realistic. Appendix B: Evaluating print performance (speed) To most accurately reflect the environment in which you expect the unit to be used, choose a variety of popular applications and typical files that are representative of what consumers might print. Make sure that all devices being tested are configured in the same manner. What to measure There are several ways to measure print performance. Some of the most common are: “Click-to-drop” time “Return-to-application” time “Pick-to-drop” time Click-to-drop time is the total print time from issuing the PRINT command to completion of the printed document. It is generally considered the most relevant speed measurement. If you select only one method to measure print speed, click-todrop time will be more reflective of what most users look for in printer performance evaluation. This method measures the time from initiating the PRINT command to the time the computer is available for other tasks while printing is accomplished in the background. Some printers may pause momentarily after the PRINT command is selected, before printing actually begins. Pickto-drop time measures print time from the instant the first piece of media is picked from the input tray, to completion of the printed document arriving in the output tray. Using a stopwatch Relying on a computer system or printer driver for timing performance may introduce unacceptable variation in the test process. For this reason, we recommend the use of a stopwatch to record print times. Use a stopwatch that is accurate to within 0.1 second, if possible. Selecting paper type/print settings by turning off the automatic paper type sensor The Deskjet 5650 printer has an optical sensor that detects the type of paper in the in-tray for optimal print quality results, automatically (see the section on “Existing HP Technologies” for details). Select the specific type of paper you are using, for example, plain paper, from the Type is menu. If you change paper types during your evaluation, be sure to select the new paper from the menu. HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 22 Selecting test files The suggested performance tests in the table below include a variety of sample documents commonly used in home office and small office environments. Output on photo media from one printer should be compared with output on the same type of photo media from another printer; output on coated media from one printer should be compared with output on coated media for another printer. HP Deskjet 5650 Series Reviewer’s Guide Spring 2003, Not intended for customer use 23 Steps for performance testing Perform each of the print speed tests listed in the table on the previous page three times Average the results. If there is significant variation in test times (for example, the time for one test is remarkably different from the times of the other two), you will need to perform additional tests to obtain accurate results. As you print the samples, measure and record the print times as follows: o Push the START button on the stopwatch at the same time that you click the PRINT command in the software application. o Push the STOP button on the stopwatch the moment the last page of the document drops in the printer output tray. Record the time. Printer servicing If you hear activity going on inside the device but the paper is not advancing at regular intervals, the printer may be servicing the printhead. This process can take from several seconds, up to one minute. Automatic servicing methods vary greatly from one printer to another and may be driven by factors such as the number of pages printed, or the time elapsed since the printer’s last use. Since servicing may occur randomly during performance testing, it is important to repeat print speed tests a minimum of three times. Note: For best results, performance evaluation should be conducted in a test environment ranging between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius (68 to 86 Fahrenheit). Evaluating performance results The most accurate way to evaluate your results is to perform similar tests with only one variable, e.g., resolution or document length, per trial. Then average all the results for a comprehensive view of print performance for typical documents. If printing errors or messages such as ‘memory out’ occur, make a note of the conditions that cause the error and then record what remedies, such as allocating more system memory or changing resolution, permit the job to print correctly. When comparing the performance of more than one printer, it is important to look beyond the speed trial data and consider the acceptability of the output. Note that tradeoffs are often made for certain modes. Compare the results for a given document printed in draft, normal and best modes. Consider whether the quality meets your standards.
