Corruption in the Republican Party causes some
Republicans to split with the party. Also other groups broke free from the
Republican Party due to different ideas in reconstructrction. The people who
broke away got together with the southern whites and called themselves Liberal
Republicans. They nominated Horace Greeley* to run against Ulysses S.
Grant**, in the election of 1872. Even though there was a Republican division,
Grant was re-elected.
*Horace Greeley- was a newspaper editor from
New York that was nominated to represent the Liberal Republicans in the
Election of 1872
**Ulysses S. Grant- ran in the Election of 1872 to be re-elected after the Election
of 1868. He was also a Northern war hero.
Grant’s Administration-Top Government officials were making unfair deals and making plans to
withhold public tax money. These officials damaged Grant’s administration and
caused an economic depression. Many blamed the Republicans. The Republican
Party was weakened and Democrats gained seats in the Senate. The
Democratic Party controlled part of the federal government.
