DNA Model Project Biology 1-2 Due: Worth 100 Points During the course of this week you have been give n information on how DNA molecules code for specific amino acids and proteins. During this project you will use this information to create a specific DNA molecule that codes for three amino acids. For this assignment you will work in groups of three students. Groups will not be assigned so choose your partners wisely. Remember LATE WORK ON PROJECTS IS NOT ACCEPTED!! Requirements: Model must Be in 3-D Be in the form of a double helix Show correct base pairing Contain a sugar-phosphate backbone Represent all four nucleotides by a different color or shape. Have a key indicating which nucleotide is which Code for a start codon, three amino acids, and a stop codon. o This means that your model must be at least 15 base pairs long!! Must be created during class time. This assignment will be done during class time. The following is a timeline of events for the next week and a half: Friday 1/8/10 – Following quiz assign responsibilities and materials to group members. Plan for work the following week. Monday 1/11/10 through Thursday 1/14/10 – The entire class period will be given for DNA construction. **NOT HAVING MATERIALS READY FOR THESE DAYS WILL RESULT IN AN INDIVIDUAL BOOK WORK ASSIGNMENT. (At no point should a group tell me “We’re working on it at home.”) Friday 1/15/10 - DNA models are due and presented to the class. Late work will not be accepted. Not having a project will result in a zero!! Name __________________________ Date __________________ Period____ Group Project Worksheet This will be completed and turned in on Friday 1/15/09 1. Which three Amino Acids will your model code for? Start Codon Amino Acid Amino Acid Amino Acid Stop 2. Which transfer RNA nucleotides would be needed for these? 3. Which mRNA would be needed for these tRNA molecules? 4. Which DNA molecule would be needed for these mRNA molecules? 5. Rewrite your DNA molecule showing both strands of DNA. 5’ 3’ 3’ 5’ This is what you will model!!
