PLEASE BE ADVISED.
The synagogue building must be evacuated immediately
when the fire alarm goes off.
Do not reenter the building until the fire department
completes their inspection and gives us the all-clear to
reenter.
Do not assume it is a false alarm. It is safer to assume that
there is a fire.

YOUTH NEWS
The year 2001 started off great for the youth
groups. It began with a record-breaking
delegation to the annual Disney Day on Jan. 14.
This event is sponsored by the HaNegev Region of
USY which includes all of the southeastern states.
There were over 1500 Jewish teenagers and
advisors who had a great time at MGM Studios.
Gainesville was represented by 20 USYers & 15
Kadimaniks - along with the two most amazing
advisors in the region, Jeremy and Keren. We also
like to extend a special THANK YOU to Jodi
Oren for being our brave & friendly chaperone.
Halutzim had a great turnout for "P" daywhere the members wore Pajamas, ate Pineapple,
made Pizza Bagels, and drank Publix soda at a
Picnic. Everyone had a great time at this creative
program.
Kadima is on its way to Jacksonville for their
annual convention at the JJC. They are busy
preparing their T-shirts, chapter songs, cheers, and
banner. Gainesville will also conduct the Friday
evening service at the convention. Good luck!
USY will have a fun night at the movies at
the end of January followed by a board overnight.
The board members and the advisor will work
tirelessly throughout the evening planning
programs for the year, and documenting past
events for chapter competitions in May. Look
forward to upcoming exciting social, religious, and
educational programs planned by the brilliant
executive board of USY.
As always, we would like to remind everyone
that the youth groups are open to ANY JEWISH
STUDENTS in grades 3-12. There is no other
requirement besides being Jewish!! If you have
never been to a program, now is the perfect time to
start!! For more information contact Keren Eliav

The Rabbi Writes: Our Children’s Jewish Identity
Most every Shabbat, I have the pleasure of calling up our community’s youngest children to sing “Ein K’eiloheinu” at
the end of services. I love greeting these little kids up on the bimah, and I enjoy watching them “do their thing”. But my
greatest pleasure is watching something that you can’t see—I love watching the look on your faces as you enjoy the “Ein
K’eiloheinu Singers.”
You absolutely glow. Beatific smiles spread across your faces. Yup, you are shepping nachas . No doubt about it.
We all hope that the thrill of getting up on the bimah, enjoying the adulation of a whole roomful of grownups, will stick
with these kids forever. That they will forever carry with them positive associations with shul because they get to stand there
and bask in your love week after week.
Important as positive associations with synagogue may be, however, that isn’t enough to ensure that our children will grow
up to be committed, knowledgeable Jews when they grow to adulthood. Jewish family experiences are essential. And a solid
Jewish education is essential.
In this regard, our community is doubly blessed. We offer our families two options for the Jewish education of your
children. The B’nai Israel Day School and the B’nai Israel Religious School are both in the process of planning for the next
academic year even as we are immersed in the current year.
Our Day School provides an outstanding general studies program and a deepening Judaic Studies and Hebrew Language
program in a nurturing educational environment. Next year, with the addition of a new 4th grade, the Day School will be able to
provide a comprehensive general and Jewish education for all our children from the age of 2 through 4th grade. My experience
praying with our Day School kids, and teaching our oldest students impresses me with how naturally these kids integrate their
Jewishness into their day and into their definitions of themselves.
Our Religious School provides a creative Jewish educational program to supplement the education of children in public
school and children who have completed our Day School. Here learning is experiential. Our young faculty imbue the program
with energy and enthusiasm. Our Family Education components (School-wide Mishpacha Matters and the 7th grade’s Minyan
and Munch) provide opportunities for you to share enriching Jewish experiences with your kids. As I teach our 7th graders every
week, I am constantly impressed with the intelligence of our kids and the Jewish commitment our religious school has clearly
promoted.
Registration is open now for both schools. Please contact Dr. Kay Gonsoulin, our Day School Director, or Dr. Mark
Sherwood (Sherwood@eye1.eye.ufl.edu), the chair of our Day School Committee if you are interested in hearing more about the
Day School. Please contact Malka Dagan, the Director of the Religious School or Meredith Bachrach (m.w.bachrach@att.net),
the chair of our Religious School Committee, if you are interested in hearing more about our Religious School. Dr. Gonsoulin
and Mrs. Dagan can be contacted through the B’nai Israel office.
And encourage your little ones to come sing Ein K’eiloheinu with us on Shabbat morning—it does us all a world of good!
Rabbi Amy Levin

REMARKS OF RABBI NEIL GILLMAN
AS PRESENTED DURING THE DECEMBER 17, 2000 INSTALLATION OF
RABBI AMY LEVIN
I am pleased to join you at this celebratory event, and am honored to participate (even if from afar).
I have the best job in the world. I get to work with an extraordinary group of colleagues and students. The relationships I
develop with my students extend into their careers in the rabbinate.
My relationship with Rabbi Levin goes back to our earliest years in the Seminary -- before she became a student, and when I
was a new member of the faculty. Our relationship has spanned decades.
It is always tempting on an occasion of this kind to only say nice things. But this is too important an event to be trivial. Instead,
I want to talk about some of the challenges that confront this generation of Conservative Rabbis throughout the country. The
effectiveness of Rabbi Levin’s rabbinate in Gainesville will largely be determined by how she and the congregation together deal with
these challenges.
The first of these is the failure of the Conservative Movement to create a halachically observant community. It is ironic that this
movement began as a reaction against the liberalizing trend of American reform toward the end of the 19th Century. We were to stand
for the traditions of Judaism. That is why we were called “Conservative.” But from my informal conversations with Rabbis around
the country, my sense is that not more than 10% or 15% of Conservative congregants keep a Kosher home and observe a more-or-less
traditional Shabbat.
That is an incredible statistic, but in the context of tonight’s celebration, what it says to me is that the Conservative Rabbi is an
incredibly lonely person. The Orthodox and Reform Rabbi both share a set of values and a lifestyle with their congregants. The
Conservative Rabbi does not. That is why the major complaint of most of my Conservative rabbinic colleagues is that they are lonely.
And if your Rabbi, once the honeymoon period passes, becomes aware of her essential Jewish loneliness, it does not bode well for the
future of her relationship with the congregation.
The second of the challenges is how to deal with a newly empowered laity. A Conservative Rabbi of a generation ago was a
powerful and authoritarian personality. That Rabbi was never called by his first name. He was usually called “the Rabbi” or simply
“Rabbi.” And, he stood on an elevated platform with a black robe and spoke to the congregation, who was imprisoned in long pews
and told when to stand, when to sit, what page to turn to, and whether to read in Hebrew or in English, aloud or silently. Of course,
that Rabbi’s authority never extended beyond the doors of the Synagogue building, because if it had there would have been many more
Kosher homes. And, of course, the congregation, or at least the board, had the ultimate power -- the power to hire and fire. But a
generation ago, congregants venerated their Rabbi. They were, in large part, uneducated, and the Rabbi retained the image of a
powerful “father figure.”
All of that is gone today. Many congregations have lowered the bimah, both architecturally and metaphorically. The leadership
of most Conservative congregations today is composed of men and women with advanced degrees who are authority figures in their
own right and in their own fields. The flow of power in the Synagogue has become equalized. And the Rabbi today sees himself or
herself as more of a mentor than a parent figure. This demands a new awareness on the part of Synagogue leadership and the Rabbi -a sense of collegiality; a shared respect for what each can contribute to the shaping of Synagogue policies in all areas beginning with
the design of the sanctuary, the budget, and even extending into the choice of a prayerbook, and decisions about liturgy and ritual in
the Synagogue service. The Conservative Rabbi still remains the Marah D’Atra -- the “Master of the Place” or the religious authority
-- but how that authority is to be exercised is an issue which has to be addressed by both the Rabbi and the congregation.
The third issue confronting every Conservative Rabbi is how to live with tension. Tension is endemic to Conservative Judaism.
Tensions in how we understand God. How we understand what happened at Sinai. Tensions regarding what ritual observances change
and which do not. How much pluralism. How much relativism. How to avoid a slippery slope. How to hold onto a sophisticated,
individualized group of lay people who come to the Synagogue with many different needs.
The irony is that religion is popularly understood to provide peace of mind. But my understanding of religion is that it flourishes
with tension. Every Conservative Rabbi has to learn not only how to live with the tension, but to persuade his or her congregants to
celebrate the tension because with tension comes vitality. That is probably the most difficult challenge of all. And it is one that even I
have to remind myself to celebrate.
None of these three issues is new to Rabbi Levin. We have been talking about them for years. But I wanted to remind her of
them tonight, and to share them with you because she cannot address them alone. And I conclude with what I began. This is too
important an occasion to engage in trivialities. What we celebrate tonight is the formal inaugural of what we all pray will be a long
and fruitful relationship. That relationship will be shaped by you and Rabbi Levin together as you deal with issues such as these.
Finally, I cannot tell you how thrilled I am for you and for my old friend, my student, and my colleague. You have learned
something about her these past four months, and you have come to know her as I have known her. She is a gracious, warm,
thoughtful, knowledgeable, and talented Jewish woman, and a great Rabbi. Would that we would have men and women of this caliber
in every one of the roughly 1,000 congregations, chaplaincies, and Hillel foundations throughout the country. We would transform the
Jewish community overnight. You are extraordinarily fortunate, and I know that so is she. And, I am terribly sorry that weather
conditions in New York grounded me. Please invite me again.

Theological Seminary of America.

Hadassah, the largest women’s Zionist organization in the world, was founded in 1912, when a small study circle of American women
headed by Henrietta Szold, decided to expand into a national organization committed to bringing modern health care to the Holy Land, Eretz
Israel. In 1913, they sent two American public health nurses to Jerusalem to set up a maternity center and dispense treatment to children with
trachoma, a then rampant debilitating eye disease. In 1918, at the end of World War I, Hadassah’s medical activities were inaugurated with
the American Zionist Medical Unit mission.
Widely recognized as a leader in medical achievement, Hadassah is responsible for many innovations, including Israel’s FIRST
modern health facility, nursing school, medical school, dental school, trauma unit, school of public health and occupational therapy, complete
cancer care center, bone marrow transplantation unit, pharmacology unit, Jewish hospice in Jerusalem, geriatric task force, skin bank and
bone bank. Currently, the Goldyne Savad Institute of Gene Therapy at the Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center at Kryat Hadassah is
conducting research in the field of molecular medicine, which will enable perfected gene therapy techniques to replace diseased and defective
genes with corrected versions. Gene Therapy is projected to eradicate many of the devastating diseases currently affecting mankind.

Dear Friends,
The Ritual Committee would like to thank those of you who responded to the first "Minyan Mitzvah" letter.
At this time we would like others to please consider making a commitment to help ensure that there is a minyan for services on
Thursday mornings (7:00-8:00), Tuesday evenings (6:00-6:30), and Saturday evenings (time varies). A small core of our members
meets regularly for prayer at these times; they are complemented by a few who come for Kaddish during a year of mourning, or for
Yahrzeit. Unfortunately, however, a minyan of ten is not always assured and, at those times, it is not possible to recite Kaddish.
We could be reasonably sure of having a minyan for each service if a majority of our members (men and women above the age of
Bar/Bat Mitzvah) committed to attending just two of these services during one month of the year. If each member of your family
would be willing to make this commitment during his/her birthday (or a yahrzeit) month, the Ritual Committee will take responsibility
for reminder notification.
Thank you in advance for returning the attached response form indicating your commitment.
Sincerely,
The Ritual Committee

BENEFITING THE ST. FRANCIS HOUSE
B'nai Israel, as a part of its outreach to the Community
efforts, has been bringing complete home-cooked meals to
the St. Francis Homeless Shelter for almost 9 years now.
Every other week, on Wednesdays, a group of us brings the
food. Each person in the group is responsible for part of the
dinner, from main dish, salad, vegetable, dessert, along with
buttered bread and milk, and then we serve the dinner. In
serving we are able to see the guests as real people who
need our help. And they can see us as caring people - as
Jews and as friends.
We always welcome new participants in our project.
It's a mitzvah for all of us who can, to be involved. Call
Elsa Kula at 375-7246.

ARTWORK AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE
Elsa Kula painted "The Parchment Burns but the Letters Soar
Upward," which can be viewed in the B'nai Israel Social Hall.
This painting based on Rabbi Hanina ben Tradyon's
martyrdom during the Roman occupation of the Land of Israel
has a profound message: Although the parchment is
destroyed, the letters are not. They ascend, regroup, and
survive. It represents Judaism as an Eternal Path, surviving
countless efforts to annihilate it, but surviving with God's
grace. A 20x30 reproduction of this painting, is available for
purchase in the Synagogue Office at a reduced cost of $18.00
each.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
What a wonderful and productive beginning of 2001 we have enjoyed together! Our Congregation is working
on so many interesting and important things which will “roll out” over the coming months.
For example, and truly the most important of all, is the hard work being done daily by the volunteers and faculty
educating our children. Hopefully you have had an opportunity to observe the Religious School, Malka Dagan, and
our faculty in action. From Kindergarten to High School students, our youth are getting a tremendous exposure to
Jewish history, heritage, rituals, and practices.
Likewise, with respect to our Day School. We now offer daily curricula ranging from early child education to
the third grade. Dr. Kay Gonsoulin, together with our faculty (including Rabbi Levin), offer a first-rate Jewish and
secular education to our students. Dr. Gonsoulin is applying her “not one size fits all” individualized approach to
ensure that the needs of all students are addressed on an ongoing basis. How exciting it would be for us all to see our
Day School continue to grow in enrollment and to add additional grades!
On the general operational “front,” our Building/Building Expansion and Long-Range Planning Committees are
becoming increasingly active to help us address our Congregation’s evolving needs. We are a larger Congregation
than in years past; “our” needs are becoming increasingly diverse and sophisticated as we evolve; and we must plan
now to ensure that our physical “home” and the programs we will offer can and will serve those needs over time.
I conclude with an important topic for our entire Shul family. This past January 21 we conducted a Civitan
blood drive. I remind us all how important it is “to give so others can live.” It should be noted that when our
Congregation reaches a certain number of donations (i.e., donations – as opposed to individual donors — equaling
half the number of our total “membership units”) during a calendar year, Civitan’s Blood Donor Benefit Program will
pay the non-insured portion of their blood processing fees for all members of the Congregation and their income tax
“dependent” family members. In order to assist our community generally and our Shul specifically, we will now hold
blood drives several times per year. (Please keep in mind that if you cannot attend a blood drive at the Synagogue,
you can make donations at Civitan -- 1221 N.W. 13th Street -- and have those donations applied to the Congregation’s
“account” [#R009-2].)
P.S. Please be sure to continue to purchase Scrip and to use an Albertson’s Community Partners card. Those
fundraising activities cost you no more than you would otherwise spend, and benefit the Shul directly and greatly.
Phil Kabler, President
PURIM SPIEL
Our annual Sisterhood Purim Bake will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2001. It’s rather early this year and so it is necessary
for you to get your Hamentaschen order in as soon as possible. Just a reminder that orders must be made in dozen or half dozen
lots and your check, made out to B’nai Israel Sisterhood, must accompany your order.
Rhoda Chester & Elaine Kaplan will be leading our cadre of very able bakers and the Hamentaschen will be delicious. So
order a lot, and order early. Orders may be picked up the afternoon of the 4th or the week following. One further note, there will
be no Sisterhood Bake Sale during the Purim Carnival.
Please contact Rhoda at 338-0040 or Elaine at 377-9511 if you would like to help bake.
