Walkabout of Music Collection on the First Floor 2. Range of clients and their needs There are different formats of music to fill different customer needs. When dealing with customers it must be established exactly what it is that they are after. Some of the formats have a different issue period to allow musicians to rehearse together. 3. Types of musical score The music for a symphony could come in a variety of different formats. a miniature score a full score a piano reduction for one or more pianos, or even a piano duet an orchestral set or for an opera a vocal score a full score a libretto 4. Music Searching Here are some general tips for you to help you search for classical music and to give you more confidence: find out as much information from the customer as you can during the reference interview. Sometimes you may need to ask the customer to help with the spelling of the composers name or spelling of the title if it is in a foreign language do they want CD or sheet music ? if it is sheet music, ask for what instrument(s) or format please be very specific about what you are after when making a basement request. If they are after a particular piano sonata by a major composer such as Mozart, Haydn or Beethoven, don’t bother to search on the catalogue. We hold the complete sonatas of these composers in various volumes. Go straight to the shelf and look under the composer. The contents of each volume are in the front and are very clear to follow. More and more scores are coming packaged with a compact disc in the back. This can be a piano or orchestral/instrumental accompaniment for voice or instrument. The CDs are free and the loan period is just the 4 weeks. We have two main series: Jazz play along Cantolopera Musicpartner. this is CD only but customers can borrow the score separately. 5. Tips for searching on Millennium Call Number Search Know thy Dewey numbers! Using the Call number search is a very straightforward way to search for sheet music by eliminating the need to sort or modify your search to printed music. You will be searching for the specific instrument or rendition requested by the customer. 782.1 Moz will bring up all the Mozart operas 786.4 Deb will bring up all the piano music of Debussy 787.1 Viv will bring up all the violin music by Vivaldi Page 2 Keyword Search When searching using Keyword remember that they way Millennium prioritises the results is by key words in the title first and then key words in the contents field. If you are searching for a song, you will probably have to scroll down the list a bit to find what you are looking for, as the song may not necessarily be in the title of the album. Subject search Subject search can be very useful particularly in the case where a customer is wanting a specific combination of instruments: Trios for flute, violin, violoncello – search Trios then instrumentation Clarinet and flute music – search clarinet and flute music with a backing track - search Recorded accompaniments Songs from a particular era – search popular music and decade Author Search Sometimes you may have to look up by composer. If it is one of the prolific composers such as Mozart you will need to limit your search by format, printed music or music CD. This helps to reduce the volume of items to sort through. Searching for Choral Sets and Orchestral Sets Our holdings are all on Millennium except for the Royal Auckland Male Voice Choir (a few odd ones are on as fast add entries). If we do not have the required item, search on Cadence database. http://cadence.natlib.govt.nz (or select from the databases through Te Puna) This has the complete holdings of orchestral and choral sets throughout the country. If we do not hold the item, you will need to refer the customer on to the holding library. Cadence will give the contact details. These are not available through Interloan. The customer has to deal with the organisation directly. National Library Music Hire is not done through Interloans either. However, we do supply our material to outside of Auckland customers through the Interloan system.
