Short Answer
Directions: Please answer each question fully, provide details from class materials
and discussions. (5 points each)
1.) Explain what it means to say Islam is "God-centered".
Islam is completely devoted to Allah. They say stuff like Inshallah (god willing) all
the time. Even the first words a baby should hear is suppose to be the shahadah,
the profession of faith. They fast to get closer to God. They don't let his holy book
get damaged. Each and everything they do as something to do with God.
Islam is to be thinking about God all day. An example of that is salat to pray 5 times
a day to god. Here in Islam they even devote a special month called Ramadan
where they fast to prove to God their devotion. They do everything with Allah in
their mind from a ballet role to a test. Before and after.
2.) Identify one thing that seems to be universal across all three religions we have
studied.
Explain in detail what led you to choose this one thing.
Monotheism. A universal thing is they're all monotheistic. I picked it because all the
talk about God makes it jump out. The first commandment "I am the lord your god,
there is no god but me" is similar to the shahadah. Also I heard that its the same
god as Abraham and Moses.
God and his prophets. Across all 3 religions there is one God and (at least) one
prophet. God & Muhammad, God & Jesus, God & Moses, Abraham and Isaac. But,
the point is they are all connected through this one God and many prophets.
Prayer. All of the religions we've studied there's been some type of prayer to god,
whether it's asking for forgiveness, thanking god, or anything else. In Islam you
have salat, the 5 daily prayers and the mosque. Judaism you have many objects
used for prayer and a temple for prayer. In Christianity you also have items for
prayer and a church.
