Geomatics Program for State Employees
Schedule for Fall 2005
The New Jersey Office of Information Technology-Office of GIS (NJOIT-OGIS) in coordination
with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has developed a program
with the Cook College Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) to offer Geomatics
courses to State employees in Trenton at a discounted rate. The following course is being offered
this fall:
Cartography for GIS Users
Every aspect of map display can adjust the opinion of your audience and the validity of the
information. When maps are used as a decision making tool, you want to know how to create the
perfect product. A simple misuse of scale, projections, or even color scheme can destroy the
purpose of your map. As GIS increases in use, so does the production of sinfully bad maps. If you
are considering using maps, take advantage of our course and learn how to transform your map
into a deal closing presentation. Our hands-on course will cover the concepts of cartographic
design, communication, and the best methods for creating both functional and eye pleasing maps.
We will provide you with a practical foundation for understanding map projections, coordinate
systems, thematic mapping, pattern use, and typographic lettering and symbolization.
