OBJECTIVE: 1. To begin the study of Chemistry with a knowledge base necessary for success in this
course.
2. To study the names and symbols of the elements.
3. To become familiar with the basic reading of the Periodic Table.
STRATEGIES: 1. memorize the symbols of the 109 Elements and their matching name.
Use the Table of Atomic Masses only as a reference for the names of the elements and their
correct spelling. Elements with atomic numbers 58 to 73 and 93 to 105 may be omitted.

EVALUATION: 1. Test on matching element names and symbols will be given the first day during the short 20
minute period. Date of test is Wednesday September 9, 2015
MATERIALS: 1. All students should have a three ring binder or folder to save the numerous worksheets,
reference materials and tests that will be given.
2. All students are required to have a graphing calculator. The preferred calculator is the
TI83 plus or TI84. These particular graphing calculators are compatible with our CBL2 or labpro
probes used for data Collection. The calculator will be linked to the computer. It will be
needed for assignments, tests, and term exams.
